We are happy to state that the criminal statistics of the past year present a gratifying and remarkable decrease in the number of murders and homicides, The figures Bhow & decrease of over fifty per cent in cases of murdr, and sixty per cent in those of homicide. Inthe number of suicides there is but slight difference from the total of the previous year, there being a decrease of only one case. Through the politeness of Mr. John G. Parise, the gentlemanly clerk of the Coroners’ office, we are enabled to lay bevore our readers the following interesting stale- ment, chronologically arranged, of all the murders, ho- micides and suicides which have taken placo in this city during the year 1858:— JANUARY. 6.—Michael Costello killed fo a fight in Monroe sireet, by being struck on the head wd a man named Croak. 7.—Jane Moran commit suicide by taking poison. D, Tompkins Engine Company No. 8, of Albany, arrived in our city on Wednesday evening, to take home their new engiue, which has just been completed in one of our up town manufac- tories. The Albanians muster over seventy men, all of whom were dressed ix drab overcoats, red shirts, white belts and black cravats, and are a hardy, respectable looking body of young men. ‘They were received and on. tertained by the Chatham Engine ompauy No. 15, of this city, and pat up at Tammany Hail, Yesterday it was pre to take the Albanians to the institutions on Blackwell's Island, but the day proving unpleasant, at the request of the Ten Governors the visit Was postponed until to-day, when the two companies wil! start for the islands at nine o'clock A.M.
