2 —. According to the best data that Ican obtain, the victims of this carniverous general will not be many. A one-eyed corporal seems to be fixed , but with the soldiers the repar- temienio seems diffioult, there beng bat four, which will make just four fifths of a soldier to be shot. ‘The receipt of the news of this victory was the cause grand flourish of the church bells in this city. | Rockets were set off and processions moved through the streets. The ladies flocked to the balconies to give their.| smiles of favor, and so the taking of the Castle of Perote passes into the musty records of history by the side of the Redan and Malakoif, Cotemporary with the news of the fall of Perote came a host of people on us from Cuernavaca, some in the stage, some on horses, some On mules, some on asses, Some in | literas and many on foot. Their cry was, “The Pintos are comingts From their stories nothing could be made out, |, that a report we had received several days before | o the defeat of the government troops under Vicario was | Vigario had arrived at Cuernavaca with one arm and two of his ribs badly broken, and the Pintos, Near two thousamd strong, were after him, laying waste the country as they passed along. However, we have now had several days of expectation, and the Pintos ae pear to have fallen back on Yantepec. courier, arrived here last night, I learn that Tone Diego Alvarez, with about 2,000 more of his father’s ln- . dians from Guerrero, was two days ago near Yguala, aud ere this bas passed that place and may vow be near Cuer- pavaca. The government has about 2,000 men in that region to fight them; but when ‘Alvarez, combines with, bis forces in ‘advance, under Vilaiva and Camano, be will have a force of about 4,000, Notwithstanding bis superiority of numbers, he may get a drubbing. In a few days more we shal! be better informed on this head. federal forces which made their appearance at Real dei Monte and Pachuca, about the time I wrote you last, have gone off no one knows where; but it is supposed they have not gone far, and are waiting the perfection of . the consolidation plan, when they will again turn up. Be. fore leaving Keal del Monte, they got a good thrashing from an inferior force of government troops and lost about forty of their men. Gen. Marques, the hero of all the late events at Zacate- cas, has marched upon Guadalajara with about 4,000 go vernment troops. We are now momentarily expecting news of a battle between him and the forces under Degol- lado. Lerdo de Tejada, the wire puller of the liberal party, is at Morelia, playing the role of President tntesino for the Bahia army of the federal party. Blanco has fallen into disrepute, owing to his unsuccessful attack upon this city, and Huerta bas now the command of the Bahia forces. ‘Tt is believed that if the attack is not already made, one soon will be made by Huerta upon Toluca, the capital of this Vidaurri, Miramon and the other stars of both parties, have not been heard from lately. Miramon is supposed to be at San Luis Potosi, and Vidaurri must be at his home on the frontier. The federalists of Vera Cruz seem to be waiting for something to turn up. The ebances are that they will be gratified at an early date. The government has its plans made to attack the heroic city very soon. The extremes of the republic are little cared for here. Such States a8 Sonora, Chituahua, Durango, Oajac rero, Nueva Leon and Coahuila, Tamaulipas, catan and Chiapas do not now ¢ to tb for a strong central government ‘re socially fur ther from us than Timbuctoo is from you. The government is just now in one of its chronic states of bard up for cash. “A generalization of an old forced Joan, the same that put Escandon in prison, is now being carried out; but as the amounts are small, they do uot at ford relief to the government. The clergy are, therefore, in the market for auother loan after their stocks. In a late transaction with the agent of the Rothschilds, the clergy got the advantage of the | money lender. The pound of flesh that was piedged turns | out rather tishy, and I ‘ear the Rothschilds will learn that | the clergy of Mexico a > them at their own e quite equal game. How a new joan is to be made remains to be se: ‘The clergy have securities, but they do not like to let the gin to see they will re quire on its legs. Business has arrived at a condition here that beggars description, and with a few months more nearly all branches of business must be closed up. It is impossi- ble to go on with things as they are or as they pro mise to be. The want arising from this state of things is great, and every day rapidly increasing. The laboring classes are in a horrid state, Their murmurings can be heard in every direction, and they join in the cry for a stop to be put to the civillwars. They see uo hope in their own people, and failing to comprehend a foreign intervention, exclaiin que veuga el diablo—which means in free English, that the devil himself would improve their present condition. Ik is now only two months since the occupation of this place by General Don Juan José Garza, and in that brief period be has raised the curtain, and the third act of the drama is being performed atthe expense of the once prosperous inbabitants of Tampico, who are now pros trate by the acts of that self constituted tyrant, designated by the uame of General and that of the wolf in the lion's skin. His first act of power was to confiscate about 4,000 bales of goods, foreign property; it was in transit to the interior, after all imposts bad been paid, as well as the impost for internating them—the ainount of which was over $200,000, But with this act be did not stop. The ext was to impose a loan of $100,000, making a pro rata of the among the few merchants residing here, of from $10,000 to $3,000, as he deemed proper to assess and those refusing to comply with his exactions were « into damp and filthy prisous, and there they remained tuntil hunger—and without bed or bedding, for thirty-eigh’ All if they will keep the present goverament ve to seventy two hours—compelied them to affix their name: to the tyrant’s document. We are also fav by a commercial house with the annexed extracts from letters brought by the Tonnes. see Mxxioo, Noy. 18, 1858, We are unable to avail ourselves of your valuabie ser vices, owing to the very unfortunate state of the country. We cannot, in our opinion, look to peace again, unless we have some foreigg tatervention, and we are iv hopes that the United Sia’ goverament may yet be in- duced to interfere. Vana Cava, Nov. 21, 1858. ‘Tho political affairs of this mufortunate country ure in a most unsettled condition, and it is impossible to form an idea when, and by what means, the revolution will be brought to a conclusion. The Canal and River Navigation. Pree the the Albany Journal Dec. 2.) for the present season is con- ciated beyond hea for the ico in it is strong enough for persons to walk upon it with safety. The tows whieh left here last evening floated over the bars, ani were early this morning beyond the reach of ice.’ The tows took down last evening only nine or ton boats eaci, on account of the increasing obstructions at Castleton. Three tows will be made up here for New York this af- ternoon, which will go down in charge of the steamtugs uga, Magara and Syracuse, which will about ciose up th's buriness for the season. The steamer New World reached here at an early hour this morning. The Knickerbocker broke her air pump when near Castleton, and her passengers were broug! this city iu the Young America. A tugboat has been sent down to tow her up. ‘At noon the prospect of a prolonged continuation of river navigation was more favorable. During the morning the atmosphere had moderated materially, and with a stiff southerly wind the ice in the river was fast decomposing, and the water on the bars was several feet deeper. Twen ty four hours of such weather as we are now enjoying will add many days to river navigation this season. THE LECTURE SEASO!
