Our About a quarter after four o'clock on the afternoon of | the 29th ult. a dreadful explosion took place at the naval | powder magazine, which was situated at the head of this harbor, a little to the southward of Fort Atares. The magazine contained one hundred and fifty thousand pounds of gunpowder, 400 grenades, 153 of which were charged, and 400 congreve rockets—that is, according to the statement of the Gaceta—the estimated value of which was $30,000. A little to the eastward of the magazine, upon a piece of land the property of the late Ramon Pinto, Dut which after his execution was seized by the govern ment of this island, there were in the course ection a range of stone storehouses, called the Planters’ Stor houses, several of which were nearly or quite complet all of which stone wall left standing, were entirely demolished. But what is more wonderfv! to relate is the immense jose of human life that occurred, which, at the lowest cal- culation, may be estimated at three hundred souls. There were one hundred and eighty ‘“Asiaticos,” eighty white ,sundry overseers and a number of negroes employed in the ercetion of the storehouse: besides a sergeant’s guard in charge of the magazine. If any of these were saved alive it must have been by a mi racle. The maimed who were taken out of the ruinsalive, eighty-six in number, were instantly conveyed to the mi Litary hosp'tal, where everything that science or humanity could dictate was done for their relief: nevertheless , se. vera! of them bave since died of the injuries they sus tained. The dog was recognized as ving been the property of a carpenter who was employ- ed at the “planters’ warehouses,” which erected near the magazine at which the explosion tool place. A thorough examination of that part of the ruins near which the little dog was seratebing ensued, and the master of the dog was fortunately disentombed, almost pees with hunger and with one of his logs dreadfully crushed. Op the 5th instant a Spanish friend brought to my quar- ters Mr. Peter William Froin, late chief mate of the bark Lyra, Ttook down from hid own lips the following com- plaint:—Six days after he returned to this port he was arrested and kept in the stocks for twelve hours, and was kept in prison thirty-five days, among convicted criminals and murderers. His food during that period consisted of a breakfast and dinner, each composed of about two ounces of bread and a bow! of soup made ont of rotten beans and maccaroni. On every other day rice and peas were substituted for the beans and macearoni. No supper was given him, and he had nothing but the bare stone | floor to sleep upon.
