ONE OF THE + UNCOUNTED LESSONS OF LIFE” [From the Knickerbocker Magazine.} The manuscript of the following unpretend- ing but ow suggestive little sketch, was sent us ten years ago, accompanied by a note, still attached to it, assuring us, on the honor of the writer, that it was but the simple “ record of an event, and its contingent reflections, whtch occurred the day before.”” “Twenty-one, in New York, out of money. “These three ideas monopolized my mind early on the morning of December 18, 184—. “I wasiat the time engaged in teachi Brooklyn. 1 lived ‘tle room in the York Uni coe | a shilling left. “Thad no fire—I couldn't afford it—an odd old stove, which was in the room when I came, stood staring chillily at me out of its single isinglass eye, and seemed to shrink with e — close up to the wail against which it «i in “I took down my cloak and wra: ped myself Up in it, went to my closet and took out a par- cel of crackers. J lived on crackers, they were ebeap. I put them on the table, took up Car- lyle’s ‘Heroes and Hero-worshippers,’ and com- menced to read andeat. At page 149 Carlyle is speaking of the ‘Hero as Man of Letters’—of Samuel Johnson. ‘On the whole, one is weary of bearing of the omnipotence of money. I will sy rather, that for a genuine man it is no evil to be poor ; that there owght to be literary men poor, to show whether they be genuine or not.’ “So I swallowed a cracker, (they are “dry eating,’) and commented : ‘According to Mr. Carlyle itis a fine thing to have holes in onr 3 pantaloons, exclusive of those the tailor Made se long ago. Yes, it must be that be means, among other things, that literary men should have ‘solutions ot continuity’ in their ay aaa so that curious un-literary men may vok in and see that he is not a mere bones, nor a simelacrum, nor an etherialitation with a head. That so, the un-literary man may glad- den the heart of the literary with a dinner- giving dollar, secure that the digestive appa- — intended to be benefited thereby actually exists. ‘‘ How many holes make a genuine man? “Is Mr. Car yle himself sicarm ? __ ‘I poked my finger throagh a hole, and sat- isfied myself that t was genuine?” ‘* I ate crackers until the paralyzed salivary glands refused to moisten the pulverulent aub- ject matter, and thought of those thievish Hin- doos who are detected by their vain endeavor to mo’s en rice flour in their wicked mouths. “ET pat away Carlyic and went out to go to my school. The sun shone clear, but very cold were the tey ground and piercing wind. Peo- ple went about like the smoking lamps which the patriarch dreamed of in old time: the sim- ple-minded Man with his mouth wide open, uring forth ourliog, graceful volumes of ung-steam, the business man, the tight-minded and sly, with mouth close shut, the two swift squirts of steam darting forth ever and anon from either nostril. Warm men hurried on with heads up and confident step. Cold men sbambled along with that spreadedness of arms peculiar to them, and to persons who have fallen into the water. “I went to school and taught—and came back. I could not ask to be paid in advance : I knew that my Principal was a genuine man. {came < Broadway borne up on the tide of life which rushes every da: along the outer edge of the western sidewalk. Beautiful wo- men, handsome men, busy tradesmen, well- dressed Aaneurs, and every one of them looked as if he bad at least five dollars, besides small change, im his pocket. I began to be bitterly angry. Why was not I in such a case? Why should not youth and health bring wealth with them? Can I not use and enjoy this miser- able money better than nine-tenths of all there that have ae and to spare? [t almost choked me to think that my poverty should shut me out from all those happy faces and merry hearts. I think I must have looked as “agly” as I felt; for I saw a most startled and surprised expression on the face of a fair young girl, whose eye I caught as I went scowling and —_s along “{ had an old silver seal which had belonged tomy grandfather. I stopped at a jeweller’s in Broadway, a Frenchman’s— a—; I offered to sell him the trinket. He shook his head, looked sour, aud pointed to the door, in a way peculiar to dissatisfied Frenchmen. I enunciated a very general curse upon all of his nation, and left his shop, making to myself various revengeful and disparaging remarks upon himeelf and his compatrio‘s. “I stopped ata baker’s in Greeno street, and bought one pound of crackers. It was the last money 1 had that bought them. I trembled with inward shame and rage, as I tossed the money on the counter, for I saw the two shop girls fiszie and wink at one another. They evident- a4 understood the case. And they were fair, Pleasant looking girlstoo. 1 was astonished as well as enraged that they should laugh. “A well-dressed young woman stood at the counter eating pie. or some such confect. I did not envy her the aainty, but that she could afford it. And I liked a I thought that she did not laugh. I east a savage look upon the two giggling girls which made them smooth their faces suddenly, and left the shop. But I resolved that at some future time when I should have more money, I would fo thither and de- vour pie and cake until [ could eat no more, and buy a vast —— of crackers, just to show them that was not r, and to give them withal a ‘blessing’ for that heartless, unseason- able laughter of theirs. “T returned to my cheerless den of a room: I sat down and gazed at the old staring stove, andate crackers again. I sat very long, boil- ing inwardly with rage and mortification ‘See,’ said [ to myself, ‘what I havecome to. I that have been se delicately nurtured, have under- taken, in independence and nobility of soul, to care an honest livelihood for myself, and this is the bitter end! I am laughed at by two fools of shop girls as I spend my last cent tora meal thata gar would scarcely relish. I wish they had men, that I might have insulted them for their laught Thatis the portion of the poor in this God's world—deyil’s world :— Bothing commands respect that is not well- , and does not eat pie. Sacks, of Cinc: have been lost on the York last week in the Hi wed at New ‘Ebening VOL. XI. THE OUTLAWS OF SOCIETY. is a certain class of prompt, ready writers for lady reading, who flourish in family ee and are vastly Caer in this country. hey sffect the prompt, ing, lively; up-to- snuff, no nonsense style, and are greatly given to urging as an ideal woman a creature who would be a very perfect housekeeper, a very distrustfal being, one incredulous of goodness or decency in men, and a very dis: able person to keep company with. In fact, we cannot find, among several slap-dash articles of this affected common-sense cast which we bave examined, one which is not tinctured with a rude vulgarity, a sneering, schemin, spirit— full, it is true, of fun, but to the last logree in- sensible to all those better and more refined influences which ought to constitute the prin- cipal guides of a cultivated human mind. M is the great subject on which these writers dilate with the greatest spirit, and a greedy, selfish spirit it is. lore than one paired eA awry has doubted whether this continually ur, on yo irls the idea that the chief aim of life : 0 sokch 8 husband is productive of good effects. That the idea pre- vails, is unquestionably true. Are not the ac- complishments of our best and most expensive schools—to speak the plain, honorable truth— rather after the nature of s bait for a mouse- trap, and is not the bait, in most cases, utterly neglected after the mouse is caught?” Would it not be really better if youn ies were edu- —— a ne more re — . ves, and a little ess, we do not say for their husbands, but to their beaux? ~# ssi In mate on the face of theearth is every ‘oung man reduced so promptly and plainly to is ‘intentions’ asin America. Does he, or does he not, wish to marry? If not, let him right-about face. Marriage is the one sole idea, the great game, and let aie who are not in it get out of the way! Listen to what a writer of the kind to which we allude says: “Have nothing to do with these who have no fixed intention. They are such as will loll on your sofa, turn the leaves of your music book. and fill your beads with silly nothingness, and at the same time monopolize you for all your fancy dances, play waiter behind your chair at supper, be your humble servant at theatres and concerts, and serenade you through three years’ campaign. Whistle such danglers off. Cut them dead after a short trial and begin afresh. If the man does not come to the ‘pop- Ping’ point after a season’s frolicking, he will not doit at all. He is not a marrying man, and you had better hand such over to young sisters or nieces, just ont of short dresses”? All very common-sensib! bang up and straightforward, but i tituting extreme cases to assuine, as thi e does, that ever: man who does not come straight up to the mar and p | emegs once, isa mere dangler. It is this rushing into marriage on short acquaint- ance, which fills our courts with divorce cases, and a certain class of newspapers with Spicy details. It is very difficult to discuss this subject as it should be treated. To merely da: ftera young lady is to do her a great wrong. Buta girl who does not know enough of the character of a man paying his attentions, to see what he is about and when to dismiss bim, is not shrewd enough to marry at all. On the other hand the treating of every man as one either to be re- garded as a possible husband, or else to be hardly spoken to, produces in American soci- ety effects which astonish foreigners. Rich men once continually surrounded by flatteries, whose brightest jests once set the room ina roar, can scarcely obtain recognition or more than distant bows from bellee, the instant the report is raised that they are engaged. As for the neglect of married ladies in society, it is a national reproach. lt may be said that many parties are in this country, without exaggera- tion, so far as all the gayety is concerned, as much marriage markets as the slave bazaars of Constantinople. It is all absurd, for men and women do not lose intelligence, education or brillianey, by being betrothed or married, nor should they in consequence of it be debarred from congenial intercourse with their fellow beings. The idea that love-making and that alone should be the only reason for assembling friends, is, to say the least, slightly gross. Yet it has bee: is country a fact for years, and the result has been that ignorant boys and undeveloped girls, in by far too many circles, virtually rule society, while the only topics ever discussed in such circles are marriages and engagements, e ments and marriages, ad mfinitum. he great remedy for it all will bea proper system of education; one in which an interest in matters which refine the heart and the in- tellect will take the place of the superficial ac- complishment and beau-catching. We are hap- py to see that a conviction of the truth of this is beginning to gain ground in the rising gen- eration itself, and efforts at rational se/f-edu- cation are becoming more frequent. The cases which we have described of rude, headlong, greedy grasping at ‘ attentions,” and of think- ing and of dreaming of nothing else but how to cateb a husband are, it is true, in majority ; but there is a powerful minority who ure in a great degree exempt from it, just as there are well-bred reunions, where the guest passes for his intrinsic value, without regard to his avail- ability fora husband. What we have said is, we are however convinced, not without much foundation in truth, and commend it to the candid consideration of our readers.— Phila. Bulletin. -————_-2+e-_____ Tevescores ror Tue Comet.—On every fa- vorable night there are few who do not havo a look at the comet; while many regret they can- not have a still better view of so eminent a visitor to our solar system, by the aid of a tel- escope. It is of course true that a first-class telescope costs a good sum; but it is not gen- erally known that, for a few shillings, one may be constructed, the sion of which might add greatly to the enjoyment of family groups, and others, in their admiration of the comet. Procure from an optician @ 36-inch object glass (that is, a convex glass, which produces a focus of the sun's rays at the distance of 36 incher,) and a one-inch eyoglass (that is, a convex glass Producing a focus atone inch.) Employ a tin- te worker to make two tin tubes, one 30 nehes long, and about 14 inch diameter; the other 10 or 12 inches long, and its diameter such that it will just slide comfortably inside the larger. The inside of these tubes should first be painted or otherwise lined with a dull black. At the end of the larger tube, an in genious workman will have no difficulty in se- curing the object glass, so that no more thanan inch diameter of it shall be exposed, and at the end of the amaller, the eye glass must be fixed. When the open end of one tube is inserted into the open end of the other so that the two glasses shall be about 37 inches apart, a telescope will be present which will magnify the diameter of objects 36 times; or, in other words, will wake heavenly objects apeenr 36 times nearer. With such a teleseope, the satellites of Jupiter, the crescent of Venus, and the inequalities of the surface of the moon we be distinguished. Galileo’s telescope with which be made the first discoveries in the heavens, did not magnify more. An ingenious a will readily ex- temporise a stand for the telescope. {[7~ Dr. Ralstonand Rev. R. W.
