Jackson had been defeated in the preceding election by John Quincy Adame, just ax Scott was defeated by Gen. Pierce, and the people are now divided into innumerable parties and factions Just as they were when the hero of New Orleans entered the track for his second race. Genera! Jackson was elected. He succeeded in bringing order out of chaos, and organizing a party which bas since been generally successful. The Hexaup thinks the circumstances sur- rounding Gen. Scott promise a similar result. It believes that the gallant hero of Cerro Gordo has the will and the nerve of Old Hickory; that all the fractions of parties opposed to the administration could cordially unite upon bim; and thus a new party might be formed which would contro! the government for the next thirty years, just as the democratic party has controlled it for the last thirty years Ax for the views of the Henaup, they are to beclaesed With the other speculations of that paper. Burgess and Teeter, the Pnglish financial fraud convicts, were despatched to the Australian convict fettiemenis lately. Recipath, a few days before his =: barkation, had a fare interview with his wife, and their parting is described as being very affecting. Owing Ww bis fecble constitution, which had suffered considerably from the confinement of a prison, he wae incapable of on during the severe Iabor of the quarries, in which most of the convicts at Portiand are employed, and he was conse quently put to work in the “drying room,” where he had the undignified occupation of hanging up Koen. A Hungarian. Mo Leon Hamar, has made a new applica ton of electricity. In a public concert at the National theatre he played, by moans of cicetric wires, on five dif. ferent piano at ihe seme time. The electric battery whieh worked the wires was in an adjacent room The ex-royal family of France rieited Cheltenham -) lately. The party include’ the ex-Queen ae melie, the Count de Paria, the Duke de Chartres, Prince ‘and Princoss de Joinville, the Princesses Manche and Francoise, the Prince of Ponthien, the Prince of War temburg, and a suite consiating of the Qgent and Connteas de Chabannes, and siz or seven other attendante Aner Nicaragua company tocarry their passengers from San Juan del Sur to San Francisco, receiving therefor 55 per cent of the parsage money; and eecondly, with the legal agent of the owners of the Collins line of steamships for the pur: chase of the steamers Atlantic and Baltic. We believe that both contracts have been completed; though it seems that the money for the two ships has not yet been paid to the vendors, and may not be for gome days. We understand that there is no doubt what- ever that the contract will be carried into effect, With little or no delay, and that the Baltic and Pacific will shortly be advertised to run on the Pacific in connection with the Atlantic boats belonging to the Nicaragua com- Pany, of which Mr. Yelverton is President. A general though imperfect acquaintance with these facts acted un- favorably upon Pacific Mail and Panama stocks at the board. At the morning board the latter was very dull at a decline of 2 per cent; the former opened at 10244 and sold down to the neighborhood of par, several stock- holder prudently resolving to relieve themselves of their stock until the true prospects of the company were made apparent. In the afternoon there was a partial recovery, and sales were made as high as 102, the market closing Jower, the best bid being 10114. Under the circumstances, considering that besides the Nicaragua line, the Pacific mail will shortly have an English rival to contend against the decline is very Flight indeed, ‘The rest of the market was genorally better to-day. New York Central opened at yesterday's price, but roso with free sales % @ 3 por cent in the morning, and another %& in the afternoon. Reading likewise attracted considerable attention, rising 4 per cent in the course of the day. Michigan Central was dull at yesterday's price. Southern Michigan guaranteed rove 1i¢ per cent; Rock vland, Galena, ‘Toledo, and the Western stocks generally, were better. The demand for fret clase State stocks js unabated. Missouris rove this morning a further 3y, and Tennessees 4) Californias, Virginiag, &e., were firm at the recent ad- vanes. DRY GOODS TRADE. The following i# a comparative statement of the im ports of foreign dry goods at New York for the week and since January 1:— For the Week. 1860. 1857. 1868. The im ports during the week have been sugmented by the arrival of two continental steamers, with valuable cargoce of French and German goods. The large increase of goods thrown upon the market this eck compared with that of last year is to @ considor- able extent attributable tw the Tat that at this time in 1857, the most remarkable panic ever KROWR Was pear its height. The banks in this city all guspsuued ou ue 13th of October of last year, the anniversary of which will be within less than a week from this time. ~ After the sus- pension, agreat check was given to the importation of dry goods, which continued to prevail with more or less in- tensity, till the spring of the present year was pretty well paseed. Hence, the aggregate imports since the Ist of January last is largely in arrears of what it was for the Fame time last year, while the closing six months of 1858 will show a heavy increase over the amount for the samo riod in 1857. The fail trade is approximating to its close. ith the Southern and Middle tes, aud the central Werteru States, the trade has in the inain been both ex tensive and satisfactory. Bat with the more newly peo- pled States of the West, the trade has boon irregular, light po ag on Ratisfactory than what it had been by many anticipated. The autumn has been tne and favorable to the transhipment of goods to the interior. ‘The Southern trade was obstructed somewhat towards ite close by the advent of yellow fever at the leading South ern porte. It is supposed, after the disease has been ter- minated by @ frost, that considerable additional orders will reach market to be filled, in order to keep up assort mente. Owing to the fine weather prevailing so late this season, the corn crop at the West, though probably not so’ larke as it was last yoar, id sall to e of a Superior quality, and that more sound corn will be gathered for markct than there was made last year. This tact will go far to insure a good supply of provisions American cotton fabrics contuued to be sustained, and heavy grades were in light stock and prices firm. ‘Fine goodk especially brown shirtings and sheeting, looked bet- ter, While raw cotton keeps near ita present price no margin for any reduction in prices can be submitted to by ufecturers without loss.
