One of the mort extensive counterfeiting operations that: Ww sever known came to light yesterday, nearly half a million of the spurious money being recovered by the po- lice, together with the dies, plates, &c., used Cor manufac. turing the bogus stuff. The money is ail Turkish bilte, anda large amount of it has been successfully passed in Constantinople by a woman, who, from all the particu lars that we have been enabled wo learn, was the prime mover in the operation, and the principal or chief of a gang who aided her in its circulation. It appears that the woman, whose name is Mrs, Sevest!, a Moldavian, came to this country about a year ago, and put up at the St. Nicholas Hotel under the assumed name of Madam Garfiner. It is not known if she was accom- panied here by any person, but after a short stay at the above hotel she changed her quarters to a private board. ing houee in the upper part of the city. Early last spring she called upon Mr, Wm. L, 8. Harrison, a printer, doing business at No. 82 Duane street, and desired to know what he would print a certain amount of iabels for, and obtain the plates, &c., necessary for the printing. Mr. Harrison informed her of bis price, when she lett; but in afew days after she again called, and ordered four dozen of electrotype plates to be made, representing a very curious looking label, which appears to have boon a copy of a Turkish bill, with yarious Arabic letters in the centre and around the edges. Mr. Harrison thought them to be a jabel four some Chinese invention, and did not for one moment hesitate w accept the jub. He aceor. dingly agreed to have the plates wanufactared at the earliest moment. An arrangement was then made that Mr. Harrison should print 600,000 copics at one dollar a thousand, aud that they should be doue within a certain given time. The work was accordingly Gnished, and all delivered, with the exception of about one- quarter of the bills, which, together with the plates, were left in Mr. Harrison’s care, until they should be called for by Mrs, Sevesti. Nothing further was heard of this woman by Mr. Har- rison until yesterday, when, about two o’clock in the after- noon, he was surprised by the entrance of a body of men who were no lees than Sergeant Berney, Acting Sergeant Thomas Sampson, and officers Busteed, Blackwell, Hil- lard, Horrigan, Neais, Fowler, Armstrong and Freeman, of the Mayor's squad, with a warrant to seize all found in tho place. Madame Sevesti, it appeara, as soon as she procured the bilis, had three large trunke manufactured with false bottoms, and in a short time sailed in a steamer for Europe. There she procured a passage in the steamer ‘Agia Sofa, which runs between Liverpoo! and Constanti nople, and landed at Syra. On leaving the steamer ehe appeared very anxious about her inggage, and ve quested an Englishman, who was attached to the Stean Company's office, to accompany her to the Custom House, hoping that by hit assistance she might have the exami nation got through more readily and with less rigor, She also expressed anxiety lest her dresees and other articles of toilet should be rumpled. The director ef the Custom House, Abdallah Hitlet Bey, assured her, with the greatest courtesy, that nothing should be injured, but that her trunks must be opened. This was done, aud the very first looked at was found to bave a false bottom. On this the director had all the rest of the baggage removed into ab inner room, and requested the lady to follow bim there, A further search wae then male, and two other trunks were found to be made in the sine manner, and to bave carefully packed fo them forged uetes of twenty piastres, to the total amount of 1,230,000 piastres, made up in packets of 3,000 cach, The lady herself was after wards searched, and there were fuund, carefully sewed in her under garments, 20/0 iastee? more o the same netes.
