Large quantities of foreign dry godds have been thrown on the market, and prices, both of foreign and domestic manufactares, have declined accordingly. Dulness, with a de- clining tendency, has been the ruling feature in the breadstuffs market; cotton has been inaetive, and there has been little done in groceries. Teas have declined since the news of peace with China was transmitted over the Atlantic wire. The general impression in the mercantile world appears to be that we are on the eve of a period of remarkable speculation and sneceesful trade, and that the im- petus will be given by the first shipments of gold from Fraser river and the first sales of consign- ments of merchandise to China; but, in the mean- while, no one is willing forthe sake of a greater profit, to ran the risk of pioneering in these two new chanuels of commerce. People here, however, are waiting to hear how these two events strike the English mercantile community. It has been daily expected that the Atlantic Telegraph Company, which is in possession of full and convenient com- munication by telegraph with Europe, would at least vouchsafe some memorandum of the daily finctuation in consols, cotton, and bread- stuffs; but, from some unexplained reason, nothing of the kind has been done, and, so far as the commercial world is concerned, nothing has yet been gained by the laying of the Atlantic cable. As soon as the cable opens fer the transac- tion of general basiness—which is expected to take place on Wednesday next—the full effect of the news of the Chinese peace, and of the iatest and most satis- factory news from Fraser river, will be ascertained; many believe that it will be the signal for a general revival in mercantile business. By the Moses Taylor, on Pri- day evening, $1,434,674 was received from Califor nia; but this will only count one day in the ave- rages, oud unless the New York banks have been continuing to draw freely upon the Western and Eastern banks, will not do more than counterbalance the small drain we have mentioned. Money continves to rnle at 34 4 4 on call, and 4a 6 tor short dated good paper. At these rates the demand exceeds the supply: to place a large amount the lender would probably be obliged to take some- thing less. Domestic exchanges are unaltered; foreign exchange may be quoted as dull at 109} a 3 on Lon- don, and 5.13 a 5.11 on Paris. The course of the stock market during the week has been upward. Early in the week a friend of the brie direction met Mr. Moran and brought about one or more interviews between that gentleman and Mr. Corning, of the New York Central. The result was the settlement of a basis of negotiation; namely, the restoration of the old freight tariff on both roads. It was, of course, understood that this pre- liminary understanding should be enbmitted to the respective boards of direction, and that until they passed npon it, nothing further shonld be done. It was in effect submitted to the Erie direction on Thursday, and by that body re. committed for consideration to their Exeontive Committee, who will shortly report. The Presi. dents of the Pennsy!vania Central and the Baltimore and Ohio are expected in town this week, when It is believed that they will unite with the Erie and Cen tral in @ general convention with regard to the tariff of rates for the future. It is possible, however, that difficulties, which a carefn! study of the position will soon bring to light, may yet intervene to prevent the In the meantime the talk of peace and a cessation of ent- throat rivalry bas given new courage to the bulla, who have been very active in purchasing all the spe- eulative stocks at anedvance. So faras the com: mission brokers can tell, the public are entirely dis- interested in the rise; no outsiders of any conse. quence are taking the least part in the movement. ‘The tollowing has been the course of the market:— Minecuri 6’s...... 1a Crosse land le Delaware an a Pacific Mail.
