By Charles F, Briggs and Augustus Maverick. New York: Rudd & Carleton. This is tho tive of a work which has just been published, and which professes to give “a history of the great Atlantic cable, with a complete record 0 the incevtion, progress, and flnal success of that undertaking.” The authors are Charles F. Briggs and Augustus A. Maverick, both of whom inform the public, in their 2dvertisernent of the work, that they are the editors of the New York tim. The book is dedicated to Mr. Oyrus W. Field, and the publishers state they “have great satisfaction in be- ing permitted todedica’e this volume” to him. Now, as it is but right that that some public shuld know the charscter of the vo'ure, ic may be well to sta'e that neither o° the individuals whose nimes have been anrounced as the authors were on #ny one of of the three Atlan ie telegraph expeditions ; that they never saw the scenes which they have attempted to describe; that their descriptions of the mochinery are inaccurat:; that as a history it is utterly unreliable; that Mr. Cyrus W. Field never gave permission to the publishers to dedicate it to him, that it takes away the credit from Mr. W. E Everett of being the designer of the machine that laid the cable, and gives it to a man who was not on beard the Niagara on any one of the expeditions. “Tt is proper to state,” the authors say, “that the improved plan upon which these machines were con- structed belongs to Mr. Berdan, of New York,” and ye’ Mr. Field, to whom the book is dedicated, and who never gave permission to the publishers, said in a speech whic’ he made at St. Johns, Newfoundland: “T could “ot do justice tomy own feelings did I fail to ackp4wledge how much is owing to Mr. Everett, Wao for months devoted his whole time to designing and peri: cting the beautiful machinery that has so suce ssf lly payed out the cable from the ships; ma- chinery so perfect in every respect that it was not for one moment stopped on board the Nia ‘ara until she reached her destination in Trinity Bay.’ On this point it is needless to go further. ‘The public will not fail to remember how the Times sneered at and ridicted tho idea that the last Atlantic telegraph expedition could sueceed, and how it wad among the first to throw discredid on the despatch of the special correspondent of the Hexato who was on board the Niagara during all the expeditions aud who was at the successfal landing of the cable in Trinity Bay. But this is not all. The “editors of the Times,” after this absurd and silly attempt to mislead the public In regard to the trathfulness of the despatch, would, it might be supposed, be care- ful in copying anything from the Heratn, and yet we find in the volume now Uefore ns, that paragraph source from which it was obtained. This, however, is a process with which “the editors” of that paper are so familiar that it has ceased to surprise ‘hose who are acquainted with its character. Tur Perwanent Way anp Coat Buxnina Loco- Egg Somes: a Banged Bache European aod American lines, aud the pri upen which improvement must Prone By Colbnmm and Alexander L. Holley. New York: Holley & Cotburn. The prominent fact of this work—that American railways are badly built, badly worked, badly managed, and many of them bad investments for these very reasona—will be news to but few. Tne details, however, are interesting, and exhibit great industry in their compilation. It isto be hoped that the autnors, in showing up the glaring defects of our railroad system, as here set forth, will do something toward reform. Tho authors were originally depated to proceed to Europe to compile a report for a few railway companies, and were afterwards induced to publish it with some additions. They show that, while the first cost of roadbeds and superstructure of European reilways is but little greater, their ex- penses for maintenance of way are but two-fifths that of this country, and their consumption of fuel is leas than GO per cent of the quantity here burned. The cause of this deplorable discrepancy is attri- buted to the supersedure of good engineers by men of little ability, mere tyros in the business, or simple toois of the directors and contractors, who do as they are told, regardless of the ultimate uselessness of their work, the os to the company, the reputation of the country or th» dis regard of human life. The roads must be built quick and cheap, and unstability and decay are the natu ral results. This work gives elaborate details of the working of all the promivent Earvpean lines, com- paring them with the statistics of American lines, thus showing by facts and figures not only the vast inferiority of American lines, but the reasons why and the places where the system is defective. A large portion of the work is devoted to elaborate demonstrations of the economy and utility of coal burning engines, which, by the way, have b2en tho roughly tested and found desirable on the Hud- son River road of this State. All the objections which have as yet beer offered against them are met and answered sertatim. Carrying out the idea that the engineering and mechgpical arrangements of our Americae lines aro ‘dak prima'¥ considered as yet, the authors have trations of the various imprévédients, fronr the “T” rail to the new coal burning engin¢. Besides “uaps of the railroads of England and of the con? region’ of the United States, there are beautiful lithographic cute illustrating the construction of foreign railways, the various descriptions of rails, rail joints, chairs and sleepers, and apparatus for coal burning en. gines. Altogether the work is complete ia its de- tails and construction, and appears to have been got- ten up without regard to expense.
