MON KY MARKET. Parday, August 6—6 P. M. By the arrival at Halifax of the screw steamship Prince Albert we have advices by telegraph from London to 27th ult. There was no news in the com- mercial world. Breadstuff’ were geoerally quiet. Cotton had been pretty active, but closed dull, with out change in prices. Provisions were steady. Consols were for money 95} a 95[—a high figure at this season. To morrow the parties who are tendering for the government loan to pe awarded on Monday must make their deposits of one per cent on the amount desired, with the Gnb-treasurer. For their better guidance we reprint the terms of the loan from the official advertisement :— Treasony Deranry: in will be recieved nt tain: 7, Jaume 26 1868 wot) 12 a) bidder or hie attorney by the depositary where the deposite | the princteal oP rereiee of Sar sgcevtnl bids 0 ye tet fret day | cont wil be mediately aifected to 6a setemel ‘a the uae | success! Wl afer \ It is, of course, impossible to discover the rates at which most of the tenders will be made. Some par- ties are understood to have sent in proposals, for | small amounts, at as high a premium as seven per cent; others, again—-especially among the foreign houses—talk of 102 and 103 as likely rates. A promi- } nent street operator is offering 105 for any amount; | but of course even the Wall street operators hardly fee! inclined to sel] the stock before it is known at what rate it is disposed of by the government. Under the circumstances, considering the demand that will exist for this stock for banking purposes, for savings banks, &c., and the cheapness of money, it would not be surprising if it commanded full as high a premium as five per cent. It also seems likely that the foreign houses, which are said to aim at obtaining the whole of the loan, will not be suc” cessful, but that it will be well distributed among the public at large. The success of the telegraph cable may impart snch an impetus to business as to verify even the yery sanguine hopes of the Treasury Department with regard to the revenne from customs. Coming simultaneously with the discoveries on Frazer river, it certainly will ran a chance of creating an excite” ment in business circles. At any other time it would be safe to predict a speedy and general inflation ; at the present moment the general want of confidence existing among merchants is calculated to retard the effect of the inspiriting causes which so happily co- exist. Still, confidence is a plant which, in this country, is apt to grow quickly; it would not be surprising if, should the news of the telegraph cable be confirmed, and should the communication be perfect, business revived much quicker than people generally expect. The Stock Exchange was dull and quiet this morning. The New York Central dividend had been expected by many to prove the signal of a better time and more speculative purchases; but, as often happens, parties who have been carrying stocks for some time availed themselves of the occa- sion to sell ont, and the market declined under the burthen. At the opening prices were maintained at the best figures of yesterday. New York Central was a shade higher, and Erie was firm. OUR FAMILY MARKET REPORT. ‘The farmers are industriourly spreading a report that ‘the potatoe blight bas made its appearance on Long Island, and threatens todo much damage. There is abundant reason to believe, however, that these stories are gotten ‘up for effect, to keep up prices. It is true there is some appearance of rot in several sections; but so far the late potatoes are not affected, and the probabilities are that ‘the crop will be very large this year. Potatoes must keep low in price. $2 25 to $3 per barrel is now asked for potatoes, wilh an abundant supply. Tomatoes come in largely, bot the demand {is greater than the supply, aud the price keeps up. (Great numbers of taem are exported from this city. The cemand for this escuient increases yearly, The late rains have bad a most benelicial effect upon the corn crop, and farmers say that the yield must be epormous. Nothing but an early frost can prevent it. The price of corn is comiog down daily. Peacnes from Delaware bave made their appearance in market in mui! quantities. The supply of this favorite trait as yet is mainly from the South. The variation in the price of peaches daily makes quotations impossible. The price varies from 50c. to $3 per basket. Business in the meat markets is rather better than it wae, and the city seems to be filling up with a better class of people, as is evi: denced by the demand for prime cute. There is no chango in meats worth noting. Fieh aleo keep about toe eat rates In poultry there is a prospect that we will hav: large supply before long from the West of game unknown to our markets for some time.
