Col Steptoe’s Fight with the Indians. MATERESTING LETTER FROM AN ARMY OFFICER— WAT COL STEPTOR SAYS OF THE BATTLE—CAUSB @¥ THE DISRATISFACTION AMONG THB INDIANS— ‘HE eee comer Camr Joxpan, fex Mie } & PO hire Sg My Deax &m—You will, doubtless, be surprised and pained to carn cf the late disastrous engagement between he troops uncer Col. Steptoe’s command and the bandit ‘Weibes of Indians on the Palouse, near Snake river, in ‘which the Cwar d’Alenes, Spokaps, Palouse, Ils-de-Pierres, ome Walla Wallas and Cayuers too’ part. This, to me, bas been & most serious blow; but the Gricne! wrote me, day before yestercry, that he does not Reeitate to say that his being in advacce bad saved my party from a complete massacre, as tho Indians have de- termined to cut to pieces all parties passiug throagh their eountry. My party haying been well and efficiently or- ganized, bad started on their long and distant mission, and 1 think that no difficulty whatever would have occu red except from the Indians; and Col. Steptoe told me, «fter Ais Hebt, that it would roquire # regiment of troops to pro- tect my work and survey. Iwrote yesterday tothe Secretary of War, apprising Inim of these facts, and that under the circumstances I hould move my camp back to the Dalles, there disband “t, ard await furtber instructions from the department as @ my future course. This engecement with the Indians wil! bave a most dis- ‘estrous effect upon the country. The people are excited turd more than angry. Oolonel Steptoe lost two officers vd nive men killed and fifteen wounded; » complete losa f animals and camp equipage; apd I imagine had the In- fans followed in pursuit the affair would have been ex- cedingly Cisastrous. At it was, they had to fly in the ‘ight—the Indians being ten toone. The bank averages for the past week, which were made up this dey, compare as follows with those which were reported last Monday:— © Week ending Loa Specie. Circul'n. its. Juiy 10. S119 164 "a2 25,098, 184 7,846,946 107,101,081 July 26.. 118,910,482 85 515.243 7/361}045 100,470,895 Decree 8251 = Th Increase. - 197,059 4,099 - As will be seen, the only change of consequence is in the deposit line, which has fallen off over a million and a half. Most persons will be taken by surprise by the increase in the specie colamn, in the face of the quite considerable export of last week. The California steamer, which will be due before the next statement is made up, will in all proba- bility add a million and a half to the quantity in hand, which will thus stand at thirty-seven millions before the close of the week. Nor is there much rea- ton to expect a large export or higher prices for exchange. A few drawers were asking 109}, and one house asked 110 today for exchange on Lon- don; but these prices were put up a3 much gs any- thing in order to avoid drawing. A retarn which we have seen of the exports from Liverpool, Eng- land, to the United States, for the month of Jane, shows that for ten years they have not been so light, which does not look as though exchange was going to be very active or buoyant. The change in market value at the Stock Ex- change which took place this morning, was wholly unexpected by a majority of the members of the hoard. For s week past the languor and inaction which have prevailed here, abundantly proved the present unwillingness of the outside public to parti- cipate in the exciting game of stock operations. Neither the results of the Cleveland Conven- tion nor the reduced dividend on the (G:flena were calculated to indace speculation for the rise in railway property. And as to the eternally repeated argument about the cheapness of money, that feature of the market has lasted so long, now, that it may fairly be supposed to have prodaced ail the effect that can be expected from it. For these reasons most of the members of | the board, who had seeh the market close dal! oa Saturday were surprised by the animation which prevailed on the second call of stocks at the board this morning. The most prominent among the stocks which improved were Reading, which has been oversold, and which closed 1} per cent higher than on Saturday; Panama, which, chiefly on the theory that the developement of the Frazer river country must increase the business of the only rail- road line between the Pacific and Atlantic, im proved two per cent; Michigan Central, which a demand for investment from the East put up 2 per cent: Rock Island, which advanced 1 per cent in conse- quence of a sudden demand for a thousand shares, seemingly for delivery on a contract made some time since. With these leading stocks the whole market eympathised. New York Central was j and Erie j better; Michigan Southern, {a j; do. preferred, $a {; Illinois Central, 1 per cent; Galena, 1}; Cleveland and Toledo, §. Pacific Mail declined }, several specula- tors having availed themselves of the late rive to sell out, in the hope of buying in at better prices. It is the talk in the street that English investments in this stock are likely to create a demand which can hardly fail to augment ite market value. There is no change to note in the coal or bank stocks, all of which are steady at last quotations. The bond mertket was dall, though withont change in prices. The only considerable sale was of Olvio 6's of 1890, which were taken at 1 per cent premium. Missouris are a shade firmer, the supply having lessened, and the operations of the bears having created a demand for the stock. At the second board, the tendencies of the morn ing continued t be felt. Panama was 2 per cent NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, JULY 27, 1858. Berke g Hy better; Reading, in which there is reason to suppose that bears are badly caught, rose 3; Rock Island, $; Michigan Southern, 4; Toledo, 3; New York Central, 4, &c. Other stocks were steady, except La Crosse, which fell off } per cent, probably in consequence of Governor Randall's intimation that he is not yet ready to give the certificate desired. Milwaukie and Mississippi sold at 173; they are understood t» have placed all their moveables under a ch: ttel mortgage. Galena sold at 88, ex-dividend, eqna! t» 92. The closing prices at Groesbeck and Hi yt’: were:—Central, 853; Erie, 173; Harlem, 11}; f ud son, 28]; Reading, 47}; Michigan Central, ‘2 Southern, 24j; Panama, 1093; Llinois Central, ' 63; Galena, 88}; Toledo, 373; Rock Island, 783, &c., &0. The market closed dull but firm. The following was the business of the Sub-Trea sury this day:— wor which from Customs Teta balance The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $17,385,160 70, and the balances were $963,969 45, The Metropolitan certificates remain at $6,000. Of course there is no foundation for the story. The first beginning of an attempt to buyin six millions of Erie would put the stock to thirty or thirty-five; and it would need even longer purses than those of Albany to se- cure as much as would be necessary at this price. It is not unlikely, however, that at the next session of the Legislature some scheme may be devised, if not for the protection of the stockholders in these great corporations, at least for the prevention of economies at the risk of passengers’ lives. It is cer- tain that at present the Erie is not earning interest on its debt. And though it may be a question whether the unsecured bondholders would be la- boring for their best interests in selling out the road, it seems impossible that an insolvent corpora- tion like this can go on forever sinking itself and others deeper into the mire. A consolidation of the Erie, Central and Hudson River, with a capital of a hundred millions in bonds and stock, might per- haps, be beneficial to all and serviceable to the pub- lie, The following letter appears in the Milwaukie Sentinel:— Orrice La Cross axp Mrewarrrs R.
