XI. THE NIAGARA’S LOG. Mr. Cyrus W. Field writes to the Directors of the Adantic Telegraph Company in London, as follows - GestLeMeN: The Telegraph fleet, consist- The eable was paid out of the Niagara at an angle of from 12 degrees to 19 de; , and this in water from 1,600 to 1,975 fathoms deep. The machinery on board this ship for paying out the cable has worked in the most ‘perfect ing of the U.S. steam frigate Niagara and | manner. He M. steamers possienenh) Valowus and The cable has all the time ran off the coil Gorgon, left Plymouth on Thursday, June 10, | beautifully, and the system adopted for sending 1555. The Niagara had 850 tons and the Aga- | and receiving electrical sigus between the Ni- memnon 44) tons coals, and each about 1,290 nautical, or a little less than 1,500 statute, tiles of cable on board. Weather very pleas- ant; light winds. Friday, June 11.—Telegraph fleet all in sight; weather pleasant; light winds. I went on board the Agamemnon and returned to the agara and Agamemnon, proved highly satisfac- tory. Captain Dayman, of the Gorgon, has care- fully examined the logs of the Cunard steamers for eleven voyages made in June across the North Atlantic, and the result shows that there is one day of gales in every seven days in this month. He also examined the logs for twenty- three voyages made rd the same steamers in the month of July, and they show one day of gales in every twenty-five days. He afterwards examined the logs for eighteen voyages by the same steamers madein August, and they show one day of gales in every nine ara. Satarday, June 12—Telegraph fleet all in sight; weather pleasant: light winds Sunday, June 13 —Moderate wind in the morning; very fresh in the afternoon and ey with frequent squalls of rain; lost ight of the Valorous and Gorgon before night. Monday, Jane J4.—Strong g. le; Agamem- non in sight. Tuesday, June 15.—Strong gale; non in sight. Wednesday, June 16.—Blowing beavy in squalls; Agamemnon in sight. Thursday, June 17.— Blowing heavy in squalls; Agamemnon in sight. Friday, June 18.—Fresh winds; Agamemnon in sight Satuday, June 19 —Blowing fresh in squalls, and hesvy sea; Agamemuon in sight. Sunday, June 20.—Fresh gale and heavy sea, with squalls; lost overboard from the Niagara one ot the large buoys; Agamemnon in sight. Monday, June 21.—Strong gales and very heavy sea; lost sight of the Agamemnon at 7 a. m. Tuesday, Juno 22.—Moderate wind, pleasant weather; sea going down. Wednesday, June 23.—Light wind, pleasant weather. At 4 p. m. arrived at lat. 52 02 north, long. 33.18 west, where it had been agreed that the splice should be made, and there we found the Valorous and Gorgon—the Valorous having arrived the 21st inst. and the Gordon this morning. Both of these vessels report very bad weather, and that they had not seen the Agamemnon since the 13th inat. At midnight lost sight of the Valorous and Gordon in a thick fog Thursday. June 24—At 6 a. m. spoke the ship Henry Clay. bound from Liverpool to New York; thick weather, with moderate winds in the morning, and heavy gale in the afternoon and evening. the Valorous and Gordon not in days. These examinations show that July is by far the most favor» ble month for laying the cable between Ireland and Newfoundiand. Captain Hudson and his officers, Mr. Everett and Mr. Woodhouse, the electricians, and every one, I believe, on board this ship, have done ail in, their power to realize the success of this un- dertaking, and the reason why we have not been successful in this attempt can by no means be attributed to their fault. Wednesday, June 30—On our way to Queens- town ; lost sight of the Gorgon at 5 a. m.; blow- ing fresh; heavy head sea. ‘Shursday, July i—Cloudy weather; moder- ate sca. Friday, July 2—Pleasant weather. Saturday, July 3—Picasant weather. Sunday, Jaly 4—Pleasant weather ; saw land near Cape Clear at 7 p. m. Monday, July 5—Niagara and Gorgon ar- rived at Queenstown at 6 o'clock this morning, but as the Agamemnon or Valorous have not been heard of since the evening the signals ceased (June 2¥) it is impossible to say what accident has happened. Shall write you as soon as the Agamemnon arrives and I know the cause of the accident. L remain, gentlemen, truly, your friend, Cyrus W. Frevp. ne Gaxat Goup Nuecer.—The London Weekly Times of the th instant, says :-—‘‘ In our last number we stated that the extraordinary lump of gold. had been examined by her majerty at Buckingham Palace. On the first of May it was exhibited in the Crystal Palace, at Syden- ham. There the object which excited the most general and sustained int rest was the Bluncle arkly nugget, that monstrous piece of virgin ore, about the size and value of which so many tales have reached this country. Whoever wants to realize a digger’s wildest dreams must inspect this nugget—larger than ever yet miners hope to find, or geologists believed to exist. It is a solid mass of virgin gold, two feet four inches long, weighing no less than 1.743 Here and there are sinall holes about e of a pea, in which some earth yet re- mains, and the total quantity of this impurity is estimated at only six ounces; the rest is a solid mass of metal as bright as if made at a jeweler's shop, and as soft es mallexble as lead. It is stated that in comparison with this noble specimen, the actual value of which is £8,000, all the other nuggets that have been discovered sink into complete insignificance. In North Carolina a piece was found in Cabanas county weighing thirty-seven pounds, and in Paraguay many pieces of from one to fifty pounds were discovered in a wass of rock which fell from some unknown peak in one of the highest moun- tains of the district. Several pieces of from sixteen to thirty pounds have been found in the Ural Mountains, and in 1542 a piece was found in the valley of Taschku-Tarkanka, in Siberia, which weighed ninety-three pounds The size of the present specimen, however; ex- ceods by more than fifty pounds all other pieces yet discovered ; for scarcely any of the masses found in California, we believe have becn of more than fifty pounds weight, and even these had a considerable per centage of dross. Agamem- sight rriday. June 2)—Pleazant weather, at 2 p. m., saw the Gordon, soon after the Valorous and Agamemnon. At 4.30 p.m., came on board of the Niaga: id reported that they arrived here at noon this day; had had very bad wea- ther since; parted from the Niagara on the 21st inst., and that in a heavy gale the upper part of the main coil on board of the Agamem- non had shifted, and that they would be ready to make the splice to-morrow. Saturday, June 2}—Weather beautiful ; tel- raph fleet all in sight; depth of water 1.600 athoms; at 1.30 a. m_., tho sterns of the Nia- gara and Agamemnon were attached by a haw- ser, and 200 fathoms of cable veered out of the Niagara to the Agamemnon: splice made on board of the a : signals through the whole length of the cable perfect ; svon after 12 o'clock, the hawser was released and com- menced paying out the cable, the ships sieam- iug slowly away from each other, and when we had paid out two miles and forty fathoms. the ealls ran out of the first into the adjoining groove, and in the excilement of attempting to get it buck it was pulled off the wheel and perted on the ha:dle of the scraper; steamers run back and the sterns of the Niagara and agamemnon secured by hawser, and splice made as before. At 5.24 p m. hawser released and commenced Roving out cable, and before sun-duwn the ‘iagara and Agamemnon were out of sight of each other. The signals through the whole cable were perfect, aud it was running off the ils beautifully and everything working sat- isfactorily. At midnight had laid out thirty- one nautical miles of cable. Sunday, June 27.—Aat a. m., ship’s time. or 3.29 a. m., Greenwich time, signals ceased, and from the tests that were applied by the electricians, it was evident that an ac- cident had occurred some miles from the ship; slacked the speed of the Niagara as much as possible, and continued to pay out cable very slowly, constantly applying different kinds of electrical tests until 4 5) a. m.. ship’s time, when commenced hauling in, and in a few tuinutes the cable pastel, having recovered about one hundred fathoms. Lost from this ship forty-two miles and three hundred fathoms eable. Capt. Hudson signaled the Gorgon to return, to make auothor splice, aud in afew minutes we were on our way back to the ren- dezvous. At iia. m., spoke ship Alice Mun- roe, bound from Liverpool for Boston, and sent jetters by her. Lieutenant Gherardi and my- self went on board. In the morning the weather was pleasant, but in the afternoon cloudy, with light squalis and rain. Monday, June 25 —Weather pleasant, with light wind =At2 p.m. saw the Agamemnon and Valarous, and in about one hour after the Gergon. At 4) Lieut. North, Mr. Everett, Mr. . V. de Sauty and myself went on Loard of the Agamemnon, and ascertained that the ac- cident did not occur on board of the ship. Atter a full consultation it was unanimously decided that the Niagara and Agamemnon should be immediately connected by bawser and splice made as before, and sheuld the eable part before the ships were one hundred miles from rendezvous, to return under sail and splice again; but if after that distance, to Se to Queenstown for coaley Splice made and als perfect. At 7.23 p. m., ship's time, commenced paying out, and up to mi night all went on in the most satisfactory manner Tuesday. June 29 —Weatier beautiful— Gorgon ia sight; signals perfect. A large number are also planting themselves upon Vancouver's Island, where, we learn, they have met with a favora- ble reception from the authorities. Among them is the negro Archy,’the famous ‘“ Dred Scott”’ of California, for whose special benefit, we have heard it saia, this negro act was passed, the colored populaiion of California having become very turbulent during his trial, threatening by force and vivlence to rescue him from slavery, in case the courts should decide that slevery could constitutionally exist under the laws of California. Sofar as we have been able to form an opinion of this class of our com- munity, we must say that they are a quiet, or- ; derly, and unpretending people, none of whom have the appearance of being likely even to give the Territory much trouble in governing them, while our laws shall permit their residence hero. Puset's Sound Democrat. Tue Eriscoran Cen writer in the Christain Witness has gathered a number of interesting facts about the ministers of the Epis- copal Church in this country. In speaking of their circumstances in eariy life, he groups together a hundred names, simply taking from a chronological catalogue fer a given time such as happened to be within his personal ac- quaintance. Amongst these hundred, eight were the sons of farmers or mechanies in narrow circumstances, or who had left their widows in a dependent or straitened lot; e’even, of men of the same occupation, Lut of larger resources ; twenty-three of men in mercantile business, more or less prosperous; six of gentlemen of RDI weulth, living in retirement from the cares of a five aud a halt, and with less thana ton strain profession ; two of men in public office ; three uf All went on in the most perfect manner uutil| physicians; one of a professor; thirteen of 9 15 p. m., ship's time, or II 44 p. m..
