the government has to defend, and it must take national and not fanatical ground in regard to it. We shall believe, therefore, notwithstanding Massa Greeley’s idea of the high mission of niggers, that the government of the United States was established for a very different pur- pose than that of harping on such stuff, Tux Sate oy Soyona—Iurorrant w Tavx.— Read our Washington special despatch upon this subject. There may be something in it. ‘The report is a very curious and a very plau- tibie one. Perhaps General Sam Houston or Senator Gwin of California, may be able to enlighten us upon this matter. Or can our re- porter at Albany give us any information of the bill referred to in that quarter? Can it be pos:ibie that the Mormons are moving south- ward for Sonora, uader an agreement autho- rized by a Colonization Company in New York? We have once before called the attention of our reguiar Washington correspondents to this Sonora question of bargain and eale, and we now request them to look alittle more thoroughly into tha subject. We suspect there is some- thing in this cloud of smoke, and something, too, of a tangible ehape. Tue Heatep Texw has somewhat accelerated the annual stampede to the country, which usually commences about the fourth of July. The steamboats and railway trains are carrying away hundreds of pleasure scekers, and the sum- mee hotels are all in full blast. If the thermo- meter should remain another week at its present altitude there will be hardly any one in New York except the strangers and the members of the “Can't Get Awsy Club.” As this respecta- ble institution numbers something over half a million of members, the city will not be quite deserted. They imitate Charles Lamb's philo- tophy, and say they only go to the country for a dey or two, in order that their appreciation of city comforts may be heightened by the con- trast. At this writing a souvenir of cool wea- ther, 2 reminiscence of the odor of new mowa hay, or a remembrance of the sea shore is tan- tulizing in the extreme, Divisions AMONG THE Morwoxs—The latest accounts from Salt Lake City indicate that there is by no means that unanimity of senti- ment among the Mormous which has so often been noticed among them. It is said that seve- ral of the leaders are by no means satistied with the peaceable surrender of ex-Governor Young, and that but for the menacing attitude of the troops, there would probably be violent out- brexks among them. This fact, coupled with the continued armed occupation of the passes by the Mormon troops, should warn the govern- ment not to withdraw the army util usequivo- cal evicence either of submission or evacuation hes been obtained. Wasixotox, Jane 21, 1858, From a source which {3 not official, nor semt-official, bu in which I place a snific\eut reliaace to justify this commu- nication, Iam possested of the foliowing information in reference to Sonora :—I am positively assured that under the Mexican Comonfort governmect, or that preceding it, a sale or cession was made of thirty nine millions of acres of ince in Sonors, (a tract nearly as large as the State of Now York,) to a colonizwg company in the United States, whose beadquarters are in the city of Now York; thatthe bargain was completed; that the proofs are ia one of your city banks, and that the administration here know all about it [am inclined to believe there is a great deal of truth in ail thie, not only from the positive assurances of my in- formant, but from certain other things which can im ne other manner be go satisfactorily explained. For instance, & Dill was introduced Jato the Senate at the lato session of Copgrees for the organization of the Territory of Arizona (the Gecaden country, originally a part of Sonora), but that bill, upon a reconsideration in committee, was Aban- doned. And why? Bocause, most likely, of certain facts which ‘oduced the votam!tee to postpone the measure, ia ‘view of the early annexation of @ large additional territo- ry to Arizona. Aguia, the Mexican government has been wholly upabieto repress the Indian incursions into, and their ravages in Sonora and tho adjoining States. A colony ‘of Yankees would do tho work, and afew millions of dollara ‘would bo very accoptabie to Mexico, in this view, oven ebcuid tne bargain result tn the absolute loss of the terri- tory. In fact, this plan of « costion of lands to @ colo- nizieg company avoids the odjum of « sale of the oa- tions! suil, while it secures the equivalent in cash from the company to the government and from ‘the settlors to the company. T undersiand that tho responsible contractor with the Mexican government is in New York city, and that the company formed, and to bo formod, are to pay him « handsome bonus; and that in this sbape, or as advances to Mexico, he has already received forty or ifty thousand dolars. [also learn that it is to this business that you may set down the late visit of General Comonfort to New ‘York, and that he lef in a comfortable frame of mind. Some o. the leading Southern fire-eaters are involved in the onterpriae, the objects with them being to make of Sonora & powerful slave State, in connection with her vast mineral resources, and with the westorn terminus of the Pacific Railroad in her borders on the Galf of Ca:ifornia. In fect, the whole thing may be considered a Southern movement, and aa contemplating the rapid absorption of the reat of Mexico. Thus, in the postponement of a Terri- torial government for Arizona, the Southern Senators havo showa that they do not intend to be caught mapping this time, nor to have the law of “popalar soversigniy”’ de- clared tll they are ready for it, I undorstand there is to be a Pacific allroad meeting in Philadelphia on Wednes- day or Tharsday of this wook, and perhaps at that gathering © careful searcher after knowledzo might pick up some facta worth knowing touching this Sonora Coloni- ratoa Annexation project. Perbage, in this connection, the proceedings of the late Legwisture at Albany may afford you some clue to this basiness, Tam Informed, though I know nothing of it, that proposition was injroduced there for enartering ‘this identical Sonora Company, and that it only failed for want of time. In regard to the Mormons, I learn that they are not in- cluded in the arrangement, as the contract between Mexico ana the contractor wat mado before the Mormon rebelion had assumed any definite shape. Bat tt is quite ponsibie that @ere may be some connection between the inte miasion of Colonei Thomas L. Kane to Sait Lake City aod the present movement of the Mormon community south ward tmto Sonora. Further than these hints my informant says be does not feel authorized to divulge, but he thinks Mey will bo enough Wo lead to the developement of all the essential facts in the cave. * Governor Cumming, writing the Department from Great Bait Lake City, May 12th, saya I have the gratifica- tion of you to announce that the road is now open between Missour! and California, and that emigrants ‘and others adopting usual precautions for their safety ‘against the Indans, may pass through Utah ferritory without hindrance of molestation. Parties will do well, however, to report themselves at Fort Bridger, where any information I poesers will be communtoated.’” Im another part of his communication he says he had just returned trom the South, where he had seen and con. ) versed with large numbers of Mormons who were journey. ing in that direction, and bad reason to hope that the inter. ‘viow with thom had allayed their fears, and that he ro. gretted having been an eye witness to groat snoring among thee. ‘The administration has taken a firm position with re tpect te the question of the British craisers,ané heve immisted upon the practice of searobing or “visiting” ves- els bearing the fag of the United States being abaniored imtime of peace. It does not admit the right, acd will act allow the practice on ay pretence whatever. Stouid Mr Dallas have takem any otuer position thaa this, b.s courss will not be approved. Academy of Music—“ Sappho.” Pacini’s “Sappho” was sung at the Academy inst evening for the second time in New York, and the first at that house. It was first produced here for the benefit of Signorina Tedesco, at Castle Cardon, seven or eight years ago. The distribution on both occasions was as follows:— Characters. Arade) 05 Vege am @ DSatscoters Bega. The plot of the opera is so weil known that it is not necessary to do more than to recapitulate the leading ia- cidents. Sappho is an unfortunate poetess who loves and i betrothed to Phaon, a fine spectmenof young Athens. Aicandro, a priest of Apolo, jealous of ber influence with the people, plots against her, and succeeds in supplanting her with Phaop, and affianciug that youth with Climene, daughter of Alcandro. Ia ber despair Sappho resolves to leap from tne Leucadian rock, and although finally discovered to be the daughter of Alcandro and sister to Climene, she is obiiged by the decree of the Oracle to carry her re- solution into effect. The libretto bas all the ele ments of a stirring drama of the old school. In the banca of ® poet like Kacine or Corneille, Sa xpho or Camiile. But sho did not i in his ola brettist. Pacini wes an imitator of borate and oroate instrumentation, and in writing for the voice the composer of “ Sappho” always feil hort of his own ideas. He bad aod ar Uatic conception io , Dut lacked quétaines power and execotive ability. Thus we find * Sappno’ adauirable in parte, but imperfect as a whole. In the first act Alcandro has a splendid sna, which Gassier sang admiradly aud made agreat /wrore. In the second act a charming duet, between Sappho and Climese, received a positive demeuc for repetition. The finale to this act is also very fine Mme. de Gazzaniga’s and singing stirred up the house to a great pitch of entuusiasm., Her fervor aud intensity displayed im other réles, were reproduced aod redoubled in this, Brignoli wok a gustaiced pote higher than he has ever sung hore before, and sustalond it with case. Au the artiets were to exceilent voiwe, and the piece, which is tno gem of Wwe Opera, made ao immense sensation. [he third act is chiefly in the hands of Mme de Gazzeuiga, who portrayed the varying pastions weident to the 7(le of Sapono with even more than her usuai power. It waa @ great triumpo throughout. ‘The performance was & very fine one throughout. If it contaiced nothing bat the finale to the second act it shoula command success that alone. It is worth waiting for, even if the time should be filled up with the writing of @ worse composer than Pacini, who was « prophet that had honor in his owo country, and no where else. ‘Sappho ’’ wjll be repeated on Wednesday, Eifaces nti ' A Youre Gimt Fouxp Drowsrn—Svsriciox or Four Piax.—The body of a German girl, sixtoon yoars ot age, named Sarab Rothachiid, who hes been minsing since the ror HEE he it ft = a & z ’ Fifty first atroet, North river.
