C., TUESDAY, JUNE 22, 1858 Star. VOL. XI. NO. 1,691. A CHAPTER ON AUCTIONS, The Auction is now one of the great institu- tions of Commerce. In looking over the second volame of Appleton’s New American Cyclopse- dia, we find ihe following, which will interest some of our readers: Avetion (Lat avrtio, the act of inereasing,) a public sale, whereat persons openly compete, each offer or bid increasing upon the previous one, and the property being finally sold to him | js' who will give the most for it. the highest bid- der. In Holland, and at what are ealied Dutch his goods, which is graduaily lowered, until some one closes with the offer, the term auc- tion as applied to such a sale, being obviously a case of /ucus a non lucendo, » complete mi -| bere. In . > far as is known, invented | We lack ti the auction, which was at first held for the sale rels, nomer. Rom of military spoils among the soldiera behind spear stuck in the ground, whence it was called auctio sub hasta (ander the spear,) or subhas- tatio. The signal of the spear was afterward patupat all sorts of auctions, and the name retained long after the signal was disused. At auctions in Kome, for which the permission of a magistrate must always be had, a spear was fixed in the forum by acrier, who proclaimed the articles to be sold, and furnished the com- pany with a catalogue upon tables. Subse- quently sales were proclaiund by a trumpet. Bids were made by holding up the fingers. After the death of Pertix A. D_ 193, the preter an guards put up ‘te Roman Empire at auction, which, after a uumber of bids by Sal- pician and Julian, the sole competitors. was knocked down to the latter for 6,250 drachms, about $1,000, to each soldier. In England, sules “‘ by the candle” or *‘ by the inch cf can- die,”” which are still occasionally advertised, derived their name from an ancient practice of measuring the time within which the biddings must be completed by « candle, the highest bidder at the mowent the inch barnt out be- coming the purchaser. The minimum price at which the owner was willing to part with his Property was sumetimes put under a candle- stick—-dumb bidding: ;"’ and in the north ot England still ocenr sales where the bid-lers do not know each other's offers—*candlestick bid dings.” A curious kind of auction used, ac- cording to an old reporter (1 Dow. 3,) to be | porter held by females, who did not speak during the whole sale, but gave every person the moment he bid a glass of brandy, the parchaser being he who received the last glass in a private room. It is a little surprising that a practice, so well calculated to warm ep competition, should have become obsolete. In England a person is sometimes appointed, called the judge ot the roup, to suporiutend the sale and act as arbiter i, disputes arise. In modern times sales at publi: auction are as common us pri- vate sales, and are directed in most cases by the law, where it interposes between the owner of property and the purchaser—its cbject be- ing the protection of those who necessarily put the disposition of their estate in the hand3 of a} uf all trustee, as bankrupts or the members of a mu- nicipal corporation. The red flag is the ordi- nary sign of the trade. 3 the auctioncer. with his hammer, bie boisterous “going, going, | bis card gone,” and his earnest or humorous appeals t | vet that s the company, is often a very original charac- ter.
