The United States Frigate Colorado—Troops for Utah— Landing of Recrwita—Work at the Arsenal and Rip Rape— Value of Land and Invitation to Farmers. The Colorado, one of the best ah'ps belonging to tho United States navy, is still in Hampton Roads, and it is not yet known when she will sail. Largenumbers of persons from this place and Hampton have visited this model o naval architecture. She is some five or #ix hundred tons Jarger than the Pennsylvania. An order has just been received. to the effect that com- pany C must at once start for Utah by the Fort Leaven- worth route. Atthat place the men are tobe mounted and proceed with all despatch to join Gen. Johnston's com- mand. Ibave been informed that other troops are expected here at an early date from Florida. Quite a number of recruits arrived this morning by the Baltimore steamer. Active preparations are being made for the completion of the arsenal. Also at the Rip Raps a large force has deen employed, and the energetic officers who have this work in hand will doubtless lose very little time in completing it. This must become, toa considerable extent, a vegetable and frait ca coun try, from the cultivation of which for our Northern mar- kets immense sums of money will be yearly realized. if some of our substantial Northern farmers,"instead of go- ing to the ‘far West,” would come to this section, where they will receive a welcome, there is little doubt bat they would realize good profits upon thelr investments. [From the New @rieape Picayune, Apri!]2] Yesterday was a trying day for the levees which wall off the waters from our city and the plantations in its neighborhood. The rain fell in torrents and the wind blew Holently, so that the waters were forced somewhat above their ordinary level. Within the limits of Jefferson City there were no less than three breaches in the levee of from ten to fifteen feet each, but as a close watch was kept, no time was lost in the endeavor to close them, and fortunately, each attempt was successful. Between Pleasant and Toledano streets, at the upper line of this city, quite astream of water is this morning ranning over the top of the levee, but the earthen wall is too broad and substantial to be carried away, and laborers are now employed in raisiug the levee to a sullicient height to prevent the inflow of the water. ‘esterday morning the river broke through oppo- site Jefferson City, and though immediate attempts were made to close it, they proved wholly unsuccess- tul. Before night the breach was wihenad to at least 150 feet, and every hour tended still to increase its width. Through this wide opening @ flood of at least twelve feet in depth rushed like a young Nia- gare, presenting at the same time a grand and fear- ful spectacle. The whole plantation is converted into a vast lake, which is constantly enlarging its borders, and will, in the course of a few days, render boat navigation necessary in the streets of Gretna, McDonoghville and Algiers. The destruction of pro- perty resulting from this crevasse will prove im- mense. There was a small overflow zoey in the lower part of the Third district, but the Surveyor’s force soon repaired the broken levee, and as far asthe city is concerned, no fears are at present entertained. Mxs. There isa sig now that she will yet be brought to justice. ew developements, we learn contident , have transpired within a few weeks that warrant this supposition.
