Musical ond Dramatic Matters. ‘The concerts of Musard at the Academy of Music have attracted large audiences on every cvoning during the past week. The success of the concerts is now assured, and etill farther attractions will be added from time to Ume. We hope that these most agreeable eatertain. ments will be continued during the whole summor. For this evening tho programme presents several now fox tures. Mr. Vieux cmps bas been engaged. Mr. Taalborg and Mmo. D'\vgri have been retained. The erchos Will play somo of Bector Berlicr’s music, which is allo- | gether new to this public. Tho full particulars of thix “classical night” may be found tn the director's elaborats card to the public. has engaged Bortioz, who Is the most colebrated compo or of the Bew Kciiool. ‘We understand that Miss Teresa Fxmonte will detive leotare at the Mozart Hall on the 28th, on the lyrical p>e- ty of Ireland, in which she will reply to and correct cer- talp miaetetementa and omissions of Mr. Charles Mackay ja copnection with that subject. The lecture will be illus- treted by cight or ten favorite irish melodies, surg by Madame ¢e Lneean, the popular soprano of Dr. Pise's cbapel, in Sydney place, Hrooklyn. The strong feeling } digh exiets aronget our ‘rish fellow cit'zens in reference to Mir. Mackay’s treatment of thelr favorite bards, with the Ac }.tcnal aliracton held ut by Madame de Luseaa's deleious tiwtrations cf their compositions, will tasure a largo audience upon this occarton. Mr. Mackay, Itseoms, undertook a perilous task whon ho ventured upon the Uchliab ground of national minstrelay. Tho dramatic noveities of the week include Mr. J, Weet- lard Marston's play, “Philip of France,” whish has bocn produced by Mr. and Mrs. Waller at the Troadway; a one act drama by tho same author, called “| Hard Straggle,” and an “absurdity” by Brougham, “Tho (reat Tragic le- vival.”’ Both the last named pieces were produced at Purtoo’s. Tho tragedy has two good siteations; but Mr, Marston Is more distiaguisbed for the quantity of bis plays than for the excellence of their quality. He has more than tho ustal amount of ogotism—and dramatc authors are generally pretty woll supplied with that—and has ar- rived at the conclneion that there are no actors good enough to play hia pisces. Zo he revds them to email toa parties of friends tn london, ch must be a cheerful and lively style of entertainment. A “Hard Sueugglo”’ ts what is called « “pretty piece,’ and, barring that it fe too elaborately pathetic, ie interesting. It was woll acted, and quite eucceesful. Mr. Brougham’s bit of « comtemporaneous drama,” announced in a clever parody ‘opon the Acalemy sivertiaements, is founded apo a fanny tea. He makes the persons of to-day—tho Smiths and the Trowns—act and talk the stilted heroes of old | It server a good purposo—shows the | ‘Dtter absurdity of the humbug which it ridicuiee, and has, | fachioued trageaic. morcover, ono or two bon mote. The author, with the ald of Burton, Waloot, Barrett, Setchell, Polly Mareha'! and a | gong, succeeded ia impressing the audionce with “the | joke.” There was an oxquisite bit of gatire tn the final tableas, where all the personages kill each other, and « Metropolitan policeman stands quictly looking on, and mingling & Seger. Among the forthcoming novelties Mr. Burton an ounces a now five act drams, and a musical comedy by Muserd. Mise Laura Keene announces a patriotic drama— “Manche of Brandywine ''—‘ written expressly’ for that thertre, The title is not new. Carl Pormes has returned to town tn “ good order.” ‘The announcements for the theatres tonight ere as follows —— At the Broadway theatre Mr. Waller bas a benoftt, when ‘Philip of France’ and ‘Perfection will be played. UNION COUKSS, L. 1.— THOTTING. ‘The second of the series+of trots for purses offered by the proprietors of the Uaion Course came off on Thursday Inst, and was an aflair of much spirit and excitement. It is true there were et many there to witness the sport, but thoee present wore highly delighted, as the trotting Was extremely good. Fivo green horses were entered, three of which came to the post, viz: Mr Tallmaa’a br. g. Te Mr Hosgland’s Bashaw colt; and Mr. Peabody's s,m, Lady Charlotte, Vanic has an unexceptionable gait and isa very fast horee. When walking, bowover, he evinces a slight degree of ctring halt, which, if st does not increase on him, will not impair bis future usefulnoss. The Bashaw coit performed very well considering his ege—fve years—and promises to be aslasher. Of Lady Charlotte little can be said at present. The time made in this race was very feat for green ones in their first race, particularly when the dead state of the track is taken into conederation, The Bashaw colt was the favorite at high odds after he won tho first heat, and probabiy would have won the race had he carried lesawelght ia the first heats, Mr. Tloagiand being somo soventy pounds over weight. Divit Heat —Tho Rasbaw got tho best of the start, and opening a wide gap at the beginning of the heat, to go Uirough without much exertion He heat Panie three Son Jengths. Tunic took the lead et tke start, but on the upper jarn mado a break, when the colt and Charlotte went in front site and side. They kept this position down the back- stretch, when Charlotte broke up. Panic thon passed her, and made a tremendous dash at the colt. He reached his wheel ou the jower turn, and as they came up the home- etretch he was lapped at the draw gate. Here Hiram rallied tbe colt, and getting @ litde more out of himy ee the score a length iu advance, in 2:43—Charlotie as before Fourth Heat.—Panic again took the lead, aud keeping his feet this timo, went throngh the mile handsomely, con vineing all present that he had the ability to win the race, Me beat the colt three or four lengths, in 241—Charlotie Just inside the fing. From Californ'a wo have the usual sem! monthly remittance of gold, but no news of importance relative to burluess aifaira. We shail feel reriousiy this year the want of the canal ealargemett. The raii- | roads have reduced to the lowest living poicta the rates of freigbt, and they are atili too high to be availed of by forwarders. We do pot see that any further decrease in railroad charges can be made. Int for the necessity of gettirg produce out of the hands of growers and gottirg it to market for the purpore of xetting the mashinory of Dasiners once more {nto active operation, it would be better for uilroa! companies to lay up their froight cars ¢) | wait the return of better times.
