You ask fora descriptioa of Mr. Lewis? Low can You have him as he was, Without my stating some of the peculiar traits of his characte Nay more In the morning we fell inte discussing some incidents which had take place in Washington several years fore. Jie found himseli frequently at fault, and *¢ last he cried in his loud abrupt tone, “‘susan!’’ In a little time Mrs. Lewis ap- peared at the door, inquiring what he wished. ** When did so and so take place at Washing- ton?** After a little hesitation, she replied, and then returned to her duties. We had not got along very tar after this, when he became puzzled again, and again he called out, “Su- ean!” and azain Mrs. Lewis appeared, heard what he had to gay, replied, aud then returned to her business as befure. She was bis tacto- tum. He appealed to her on all occasions when he was doubtful on any point, and in truth they seemed to be as much one person as it is possible for man and wife to be. Mrs Lewis was Miss Susan Elmore, the sister of Franklin Elmore, who succeeded Mr. Calhoun in the Senate of the United States: of Captain Benjawin Elmore, who commanded the Rich- mond Rifles in the first Fiorida eampaiga, and was afterwards a competitor of Gov. Noble for the chief magistracy of South Carolina: of John A. Elmore. the law partner of Wm. L Yaneey, in Montgomery : of Rush E of the judges of Kansas, and of Mrs Benj Fitzpatrick, wife of one of our Senators in Con- ess. She is one of the kindest and noble t of er sex, and what pleased me more than any- thing else, was the interest whish she took in ali things that concerued Mr. Lewis. If I am nol mistaken, she always accompanied him in his tour through his distriet in the recess ot Congress—a tour that he seldom neglected, notwithstanding his physical infirmity, for he was the largest man that the world, perbaps, haseverseen. He was as large as ten wen = together—ten tat men—and bis head was arge ln proportion to his budy. But there was nothing superfluous about that head. It was compact, and his brow gave as indelible and unmistable signs of intellect, asdid that of Charles Fox, the great English statesman. There is a likeness uf Lewis waich I saw two apie ago, in the daguerrean gallery of Mr Melntyre at Montgomery, and which he told me ws the property of Mr. A. J. Pickett. The likeness is a very good one, and deserves to be copied. It is mmpossible to mention Mr. Lewis with- out saying something of bis immen e. He could scarcely waik. He could no! visit his cotton fields. on foot or horse, and therefore he caused roads to be made, whish he passed over in his wagon or carriage, or whatever the ve- hicle may be catled which We traveled in. This carriage was a large round box, which opened in the rear, aud it was at this portion of it that be ascended to his seat. it was drawn by two stout horses. harnessed tandem fashiva. and on the lead horse bis groom was mounted— This was his traveling style; his wife usually pre- ceded him in her carriage, and he, whip in hand, brought up the rear, the little out-rider forming a striking conirast to the, stalwart statesman There are many anecdotes current about Mr Lewis, most of them touching his great siz, of which he was exceed ng sensitive. It is well known to everybody that when the collision oc- curred between the two steamers eff the North Carolina coast, Mr. Lewis refused to leave the sinking steamer, until every human being had been safely provided for. Mrs. William C Preston was present, and testified to his gal- lantry on the occasion. He was brought back to Charleston, where he remained several days. * [like the people of Charleston,”’ said he to a friend, *- for they can pass aman in the streets, without staring at bim.’’ In one of his earliest clectioneering tours, he visited Camden, in Wileox county. His enormous size being a subject of general discussion, the boys got up early on the morning of the day of his visit, and tock the road to meet the monster. At mid-day, the villagers were startled by a uni- versal shout from the hoys, as they rushed inte town, exclaiming, «Here he comes! here he comes '"’ all evidently impres-ed with the be- lief that they had ~‘seen the elephant.” He was, like most fat men, a bit of a bumor- ist. I will tell you of an anecdote which oc- earred in Congress in 1530. Mr. Edward Ev- erett, in hi« speech against the Indian bill. in troduced official statements that the Indians who emigrated west of the Missississippi were in a very destitute and suffering cundition—so anuch eo, indeed, that the living child had been buried with the dead mother, for want of sus tenance.
