M. ‘The stock market was not so buoyant this morn- ing. The European news had an effect .quite con- teary to that anticipated. There was not «0 much activity among operators as we have previously no- ficed, and the upward movement appears to be whecked, whether temporarily or not depends a good deal upon the backbone of the clique of bull specu ators who, for some weeks past, have carried the market bodily on their shoulders. So long as buying @oee on briskly, so long prices are sustained; but the Moment any of the large holders attempt to realize, ‘the market runs down #0 rapidly that sales are at ‘once stopped. At the first board to day Missouri State @'e declined 4 per cent; Bank of Commerce, $; Cum- Derland Coal, 4; Pacific Steamship Company, 4; New York Central Railroad, j; Erie, 4; Michigan Central Raflroad, $; Michigan Southern, old, 4; Pa- mama Railroad, }. Culifornia 7's advanced 4 per ent; Michigan Central bonds, 1}; La Crosse land @rant bonds, 4; Third Avenue Railroad, 1. The ac- tivity in Missouri State 6's continues, and they have become quite » speculative security. The daily transactions range above fifty thousand dollars, and prices for some time past have been steadily working upwards. California Btate 7's have lately been much more in demand than usual, at better prices. Among ‘the railroad bonds the La Crosse land grant issue appears to be in demand at steadily improving Prices. The amount on the magket is not large, and fin view of the prompt payment of the coupons and the additional landed security ax the road pro- @resses, it certainly appears that as an investment ‘there is nothing better. The movement in bank ftocks has for some time past been quite limited. ‘There are very few sellers, and every little lot Offeeed is taken by capitalists for permanent investment, In the fancy railroad stocks there is evidently very little strength. As a general thing the January dividend has been passed and the Feb. ruary dividend will, without doubt, share the same fate. Railroad companies which at the same time last year paid semi-annual dividends of twelve and fifteen per cent, now pay nothing. As soon as any company defwults, we get a clearer insight into ite finances, and the facts begin to come out. The moet important feature in thie breakdown of railroads fe the admission ou the part of the managers that ial YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, JANUARY the operating expente? have been vo much larger f° than previously adm’ jt4eq, ‘The Erie Railroad Com- pany now OWOS oy to 70 and a fraction per cent, while the New * ‘ork Central Railroad Company per- pos ggg ing its operating expenses at 55 per peel 4 this company is gradually creeping up, , all ite mystery and disguises, admitted an ae last year of five per cent in the cost of ope- rath ag the road. If we could get at the fact we should f adit not a cent tess than seventy-five per cent. At the second board the market was without ma- terial alteration, Asa general thing lower prices ruled. Missouri State 6's declined 4 per cent; Bank of Commerce, 3; Pennsylvania Coal, 1; Pacific Steamship Company, 1; Chicago and Rock Island, 4; Erie, 3; Reading, }; Michigan Southern, old, }. The sales of Missouri State 6’s this afternoon amounted to nearly $100,000, principally on tine. After the board a better feeling prevailed, and prices slightly recovered. The earnings of the Galena and Chicago Railroad Company in the month of Decem- ber, 1857, show a falling off of $42,000 compared with the corresponding month the previous year. The falling off in the Chicago and Rock Island re- ceipts for the first week in January was about $9,000. The gross earnings for the week this year were $15,000, against $24,000 for the same week last year, The decrease is nearly 40 per cent. The railroads throughout the country are not actually paying ex” penses. The fine weather enables them to run their trains regularly, but they go and come nearly empty. Itie our purpose herealter to give a full and reliable Statement weekly of the retail price of all marketable produce used by families. In every case care will be ‘taken that the prices current on the Friday of each week im our leading city markets will be reproduced in the Hratp of Saturday morning. Housekeepers can consult this department of the paper with confidence, as giving the average price of each article they use, and a perusal of this column will be equally interesting to farm- ers as it will give them an idea of the value of the goods they wish to send to market. We would caution our readers in advance that the prices we give are not those which are obtained in the ‘small retail groceries and butcher shops about town. ‘These charge from five to fifteen per cent more than the regular market prices, and it would be impossible to give any statement that would agree with their prices, Our readers may rest assured that they should not give more | for their family marketing than the prices marked below. Take the single article of butter. The best can be bought in market for 24 cents per Ib., yet nearly all the grocery stores charge 28 and 32 cents per Ib. for the same quality of butter; and the same rule holds good through the eotire list. GENERAL REMARKS. ‘The mild weather has, so far, had the effect of keeping down the priees of all kinds of market produce. Expecting a severe winter, the dealers had laid in their usual stock of staple commodities, but as navigation has kept open and the railroads all continue to run without interruption, goods keep coming in daily in quantities sufficient to sup- ply the market without resorting to the reserved stock. It is estimated that potatoes and apples are a fall dollar a barrel cheaper than they would have been had the season deen cold. The hard times also have their effect upon the market, Dealers complain that sales are light. One would natu- rally suppose that as much food would be eaten in hard as in good times, but it appears it is not the case, House- keevers who were wont to buy their barre! of potatoes, apples, turnips, &¢., at a time, now deal with the grocers for these articles in small quantities and use less of them, while in most cases they pay more. The dealers all com- plain of this dulness in trade, Another fact will be noticed, The retail consumption of flour in this city has largely increased, while the demand for potatoes has fallen off, This is due to the cheapness of the former as com- pared with the latter commodity and its cousequent at- tractiveness to heads of families. GAMP. New York is unqestionably the greatest game market in the world. It levies contributions on the forests of the eptire Atlantic coast, extendirg from Nova Scotia to Flo- rida, while large consignments of wild pigeon and grouse are sent on here from the west of the Mississippi. At no capital in Europe cau such af extensive game list be served up as in this city. Weare nog in the midst of the game season, and the market is laden with all manner of birds, | which Sell at cheap rates. The mild weather has had the effect of keeping back much game for fear of spoiling, and much duck is sent on in a damaged condition. We saw | in the market yesterday barrels of duck from Virginia that were rendered “soft” by the weather, and the sale of which was consequently spoiled, except to the pedlers, who take tt to Wallstreet and up’ town, and sell them at ridiculously high prices, considering the quality of the ar- ticle. The pediers buy’ of the dealers tainted duck, for which they pay 25 and 37 cents per pair. They retail the same duck in Wallstreet to the unsuspecting bulls and bears for 62 and 75 cents a pair. The following are the retail prices of one Canvass back ducks, per pair. =+$2 50 a $3 00 Brant a 100 a 125 Red head 50 a 100 87 a 100 a 75] 50 a 62 60 a 87 a 100 63 a 88 200 @ 300 87 a 100 1% a 20 62 a ed 37 a 80 2a 1B Ma na @ The market seems to ae ‘unusually light, but prices are well sustained. The mild weather favors the arrival of poultry in good condition, none of it being frozen, and the demand about clears cif the small stock eent in. The expreas companies: ~~ that from one-third to one balf less poul- try has been brought to market this year than usual. This is owing to the very natural fear of farmers at a distance that their poultry will spoil during the long carriage. Those who know how to pack their poultry properly need have no such fear, as, if care is taken, it will ae) in good order. A flue lot arrived from Ohio during the past week in excellent order and commanded the Nighote price. Tame ducks bave advanced in price, owing to Lenn among the farmers of killing them off about the holida as of all the barnyard fowl! they are the most to keep during the winter months.
