Board of Education. ORGANIZATION OF THE NEW BOARD—E".ECTION OF A PRESIDENT—HI8 SPRECH—ELECTIO?( OF A CLERE AND THE VARIOUS COMMITTEES, BTC, ETC. ‘Mee large room in which the Board of Education meets was pretty well filled on Wednesday evening. At five @ clock, the time for the meeting to proceed to business, ‘the members that were present elected Robert A. Adams, ‘ef the Sixtecuth ward, to the chair, till the organization of the meeting and election of » President. The meeting alee called to order, the Caste read the names of the re of the Board, and ascertained that there was a fone Prema whereupon the Chairman announced the ofa President ‘was now in ordor. Mr. Greene moved that the Board go into recess for ten minotes, in order that as many members as possible would nt and be thus ded an opportunity of pens when 80 important a queetion as the election of a lent was before the Board. The motion was carried ‘and the recess succeeded. : After the time allowed for the recess had elapsed the election of the President commenced. The Clerk read the name of each member, one after the other, who there- ‘pon came forward and deposited his vote in the ballot bex. Great interest was manifested in the result of the Posi which the Chairman read as follows: number of votes cast. For Mr. Neilson. , For Dr. Williams, For Mr. Greene. 1 We subsequently learned that Mr. Greene was not eandidate, but that Dr. Williams deposited his vote for bim. The Chairmen then nominated Dr. Williams and Mr. Greene to conduct Mr. Neilson to his seat, to which he was welcomed by Mr. Adams, who had just then re- n taking bis, place the Presipent expressed his sin- @ere thanks for the honor which the Board had conferred ‘epon him by electing him to preside over their delibera- tions. He then proceeded to offer a few suggestions as & basis for the action of the Board. He recommended eco- romy in the administration of the trust contided to the Board of Education by the citizens of New York. He enter- ed into certain abuses connected wit rh ic appointment @f teachers, quch ag the appointment t6 that position of persons who, on account of their youth, are (as heen da eompetent to discharge the duties that devolve upon w have not sufficient menta! acquirements to enab! le them to properly instruct the young. After censuring gach a line of proceeding, he recommended that the pro- per committee would inquire into the matters which he pony ‘and he that they would be properly ‘con- sidered. He coul not help noticing that a great deal of money might be saved by having articles supplied by con- ‘tract to the schools ag such articles are required, instead ef having them supplied as heretofore in quantities, which, by remaining on hand too long, Be ate fm value, and remain as dead stock, into wl ey are ‘thus converted. He concluded by statin, hal he would diecbarge to the best of his ability those duties which his position as chairman renders incumbent on him; and if he ‘acted wrong in apy instance, he assured the Board that ‘the error should, in justice, be an error of the head, not of the inclination. ‘The next business was the election of a clerk. On this question there were 43 votes cast, as follows :— Number for William Gilbert. 415, Do. for Thomas Boese. Mr. Boese was therefore elected. The Board now proceeded to elect the different com- mutees. The following are the names of those who were elected to form the Committee on Free Academies :—R. C. Fellows, J. M. Tuthill, L. Ranney, H. Two witnesses were examined at the Coroner’s inquest on the part of the people, whose testimony was very important in the eluci dation of the facts. They were M benton by profession, were here only temporarily, were entire strangers to the accused, and their evidence went further to give the true history Of the cage than apy of the witnesses who were examined on the investigation before the Coroner. But the Coroner, in fag egg be witnesses did not commit those two men, Judge Beebe accordingly moved that they be committed to prison as witnesses, it being import- ant for the ends ot poste th thae they should be retained. Judge Russell asked if these two witnesses were examined by the Coroner for the prosecution—to which Judge Beebe the affirmative. rep District Attorney said that be would not oppose the motion, but did not wish any pledge to be made that he would use them on the trial; whereupon the City Judge caused a warrant to be issued for their arrest BURGLARY.
