But the large sume which were formerly included in the receipts at New York, with ultimate destination for Kurope, are vow transferred to the Britich Weet Indin mail steamers at Aspinwall, which touch there twice a month with the same regularity as our own steamers, These Buropean remittances, which, from what we learn, are soarcely less tun millions annually, reduce the nomi- bal receipts of New York te an equal amonnt, But there are still more prominent causes fur the reduction, not only of the receipts of gold at this port, bat of the oxports from California. In tho early days of that If Dorado, every Want Was supplicd by importation, from the com monest Decesaries to the highest luxuries of life—vegeta bie and avimal food, clothing, building matertals—in short, there wri pearcoly an article of local pro- duction thes seemed worthy of pursuit of culti vation, in competition with the one absorbing object—the search for gold, The profits so quired by those who first turned thoir attention to the cultivation of the coil for mere market purposes, would ap pear #0 entirely fabulous that we abstain from giving tho particulars which wo have at hand, Bet the natural con sequence of (hose first offorts bas boen the extensive cul tivaticn of the soil, as weil a tho extension of home manu factures, to dewroe known to but few on this sido, where the impression would seom etill to prevail that gold ls the one and only product of that magnificent region of tho Union ‘Tho domestic markets of fan Francisco are on the average unsurpassed by thoes of New York, the deflcioncy and high price of poultry being compensated by the cheapness aud abundance of ytanc, There are manufactories of cau* les, soap, loatber aid many other prominent arti¢ies, The | packing of beo! and pork and proparation of lard are also extending, and the ruins of the great distillory (deetroyed. by fire) on the Mission road, have been rebuilt for a sugar rofinery, upon a large seale—a very natapul reawlt of the proximity of (ho Btate to China and the Kast Indies. Tt is presumed that the whole Puoific coast, from Valparaiso to Oregon, will resort to this refinery for ite supply of refined avgar. In oats, barley, and wheat, the State is unrivalted in its productivencss, the exports of four in 1856 to Anstraiia, England, Peru, and even Chili, having amounted to 240,000 barrels, while only two years before the imports exceeded 400,000 bar- rela, The beet authorities estimate the natural falling off in the imports of California at ten millions: we say “natu. ral,’ for thore romains sull a iberal estimate to be made for the reduced ecale of that extravagance and reckless profu- sion of living which distinguished the early days of tho Siate. Moreover, the cities, towns, bridges, canals, aud other internal works of the Stale, had to be then built or cou- structed with the aid of foreign matorial, or of labor at the most unheard of prices—all of which have, in a measure, been completo; and thus the necessity for the ex port of gold has greatly diminished. The estimated coat of the canals or ditches alone, for the supply of water for the minera, is more than tweaty mil Uone of dollars, and these works are constantly progroes- ing. The country itavif is advancing in solid wealth: ‘The produce of ite own industry is more geporally applied to the sdvancemont of its great intorests—mining, sm- mercial, agricultarai and manufacturing; and whilst Sun Francisco is overgrown and overpopalated, and scarcely fifty of its first soUlers can boast of having retained even the tithe of the means which they so rapidly acquired in 1848 and 1860, the State at large has beon pro gressing with giant strides im all the clements of wold wealth and importance; aome evidences of which wo shall furnish in dota!! at an early period. At proseat we have but glanced at the circumstances which have caused & reduction in our receipts of gold from California, that erroneona Lmpresstoas may Mot exist as to the actuay production there, via, the greatiy diminishing foreign wanta of the people. We bave before adverted to the receut muccoss of the quartz mivers, which continues unabated.
