[0 SINGLE COPIES ONE CENT. A WIFE WORTH MORE THAN A HUN- DRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. We heard a rich story, a day or two since, (says the Detroit Advertiser,) told by the vic- um himself, which we think too good to keep, and we therefore take the liberty of laying it before our readers. We give it, as near as may be, in our friend’s own words : peaking about this breach of promise ease,”’ said Smith, after some conversation had been carried on hy the company, in re- gard te the Carne affuirs—‘ speaking of this breach of promise case, reminds me that I have had a little experience in that matter, myself. idon’t mean to say that I was ever situated as 3 fellow is, but I have felt about as I should think he would, and if you would like to hear it, I will tell you how it was.”” fe having signified a wish to hear, he pro- ceeded: ~ Well, as near as I can remember, it was fifteen years ago this winter, that I attended a dancing school in Detroit, with a young lady then residingin the city. [had made up my mind some years before. that I would never get married, but it was such pleasant business couldn't find it in my heart to ‘let the girls alone’ al ther, so I paid hor tuition fee and attended the class in her company every night. About the middle of the term, several of the young pe ourselves included, were talking in the ta -room on the subject of matrimony, and I, of course, became interested, as well as the others. On going home that evening I told my companion that I had determined to get married in the spring, and asked her ad- vice in regard to making a selection for a wife. She made no reply for a moment, and I told her if she didn’t know anybody better fitted forme, I would like to have her think the matter over, and tell me, by the last school, | what she thought ef marrying me herself. I | was joking all this time you must understand, | and bad no more thoughtof marrying her than I had of marrying Queen Vic. She promised to think of it, however, and I returned to my bearding-house, and gave the subject no furth- er thought, until some weeks later—and as luck would have it, on the last evening of the school, the subject was again brought up in conversation, just as we were preparing t) re- turn to our homes, for the night. Afterleaving | }, an, the hall, we talked and chatted of different matters, and on different subjects, till we reach- el her residence. It was late, and I did not enter the house, though she strongly urged me tedo so. Ihad bid her good night, aud was turning away. when I happened to recollect the | promise she had made me, and [ ssid: Helen, you promised to let me know, to- night, whether you would marry me this spring. | Have you made up your mind?’ ~ Yes,”’ said she, *- I have been thinki-g about it. but I guess I am too young. If it wasn’t for that I would have no objection.” ~ Well, good night then,” said I. “I didn’t expect you would do it—but I am bound to marry some one, and this spring too.’’ Betore leaving her, I oneal to call again the following evening. hat night I slept ssundly and the next morning had forgotten all about my night's adventures. During the day, I received au invitation to attend a ball to be held that evening, a few miles out of the city, and I made my arrangements accordingly. Towards dusk, remembered my agreement | t» see Helen, and I thought I would run over | fra moment, and afterwards have time | attend the ball. Arrived at the house, I met the lady in the | door-way, and [ thought for an instant that | to this ertect: «be was “ rigged up’’ inan extra style, which | 1 was at a loss to account for, though I believe I concluded that she had company, [ was there- fore in hopes that I should not be detained long. Helen welcomed me into the parlor with a sweet smile, and took her place beside me on the sofa. I was expecting every moment to mind te have you '"” “ Had a thunder-clap struck me, I could not have been more surprised, and after an instant of hesitation, I stammered out— * What did you say?" * [ have concluded to marry you.”” )-ob, you have! Well, I suppose it is all right—when shall the event take 2 “I thought, if it would suit you, that you, might drive round next Sunday, and we will go to mother’s, at Dearboard, and be mar- ried there.’” © Well,” said I, “I'll see if I can,” and as *~on as possible I took my leave ~ [didn’t go to the ball that night—I forgot about it, and I sat over the stove till morning, thinking of what a scrape I got myself into. I even torgot to keep the fire going, and almost froze in my seat. When day-light began to peep in at the windows, I had made up my mind what I should do. I wou'd go over and tell Helen that we must be married immedi ately, or not at all, and if she agreed to that, I | saw no other way but to submit to my fate. When I entered the gate, leading up to her house, [ heard her singing a lively song, and my conscience almost smote ime for deceiving the poor girl as I had; but I summoned up courage to ring the bell, and pulling up my collar and throwing my head back, I anxiously awaited an answer tomy summons. She soon came to the door. and I was again shown into the parlor, and she took her place beside me on the sofa, as befure. “‘Helen,’’ I commenced, I'’— “ Weill. what?” “I—, I—we must be married to-day, or I—, I don’t think I shall be able to be married at all:” It stack in my throat as I said it, for I knew I was telling a whapper—but imagine my sur- prise when she replied : “ Well, just as you please, Henry. You ma: drive your carriage around about twelve o'cloc and I will be me “I gave up!
