Notwithstanding the large quantities of ice that sanu- ally meke its sppearance in our harbor and rivers, i! i¢ very unusual for it to accumulate ip such large masacs as to admit of a presage way across cither of the grea) rivers that wesh our sbores. This phenomenon, how ever, Occurred once in the year 1852, whem the Eust river was irozen across from shore to shore, and thou- tands of people passed over to the other side—it being contidered a great feat to do so. The same circumstance occurred yesterday, and it ig estirated {bat 20,040 persons must have taken advan- ‘age of the circumetance to walk, instead of sail, from New York to l!rooklyn and baok. On tho change o! tae tide yesterday morning tho vast floes fice inthe bay were swept up the Kast river, which being already ‘ul! of ice, soon we iged together and formed a homegeneous mass, extending from shore to thore, and bounded on (be north by Fulton ferry, aod oa ‘the south by the South ferry. The fact that the river ‘was frozen ocrogs s00n become kaown, and about half. pest ten o'clock the Great adventurous traveller made hit ‘way over to ibe Brooklyn sid The news spread, and fcon @ continuous #tresm kept pouring across from the foot of Wail street, most of whom landed at Thomp fon’s slip on the other side, The novelty of the exbibl- tion soon drew crowds to witness it, and the docks and ships fo0n became filled with interested spectators, For five hours the trave! was kept up, the ice to all appear- ance being strong enough to support a horse and cart on any part traversed by the multitude who were crossing. Not only were men and boys taking advantage of this state of things, but femalcs elzo ventured on the oe and over = hupdrad af thew Dansed (© the other side, yne crowds on the docks cheer- ed the coursgecus women loudly, and everybody scemud to think it all very Spo fap. ‘Tho sight was a msgnificentone. Below lay an unbro- ken masa of ice, covering an area of five square miles— the surface thongh of but one color, was variously tinted and relieved here and there’ by moving speoks, for euch the men and boys on the river seemed tobe. The sbores on either side were lined with peeple shouting, hurrabing and having a good timo generally, end the ut- most hilarity prevatied. ‘This continued until 4 o'clock, when the tide began to turp and the water sensibly to lower in theslips The more cautious le/t the ice and came ashore, but it seemed impossible to warn the boys and men who were in the centre of the stream In a little whilo the ice near the decks became fissured on the New York side, and it was evident that the ebb tide would soom make short work of tue ice. The people on the dock saw this, and shouted to those on the ice to come off ‘for God’s eake;’? but they had done so much shouting before that they were oot heeded. Ina little while there was a great chasm near the shore this side, when tte alarm rpread to those on the ice to run to the other side, At thia time nearly five hundred persons wore on the ice ard running for the Brooklyn sore, where a few got ofl; but the ice broke there also, and matters began to look serious, as all communication with the ehore was cu! off, and the five husdred were runaiag wildly from side to side, not knowing what to do—the ice jn the meantime drifiiog slowly down the river witha precious freight of human !!ves upon it. At this time the anxiety of the people on the docks was intente, as it was feared that many lives would bo lost, While this fear was at its height, however, as if by mazic three tow boas and numberless «mall boats made their appearance for the perpore of taking of the cow terrified ice bridge travellers. They wero all unsaccessfal, until one of the tugs named the Ratler dashed dowa the river with the tide, and pushed {nto the fio so ex to bury her bow in the thick drift. A ladder was then put out, ard soon she advenicrers wore seen clambering up to her decks, All thig was witnessed with brestiless interest by the excited crowd, aed as the men aad boys wero taken off one by ono loud cheers were given and much enthvsiasm betrayed. Ablast the whole five hundred were taker off by the diferent boats, aud the river inan hour’s time was en- trcly clear of ice.
