The North river js now dossely packed with drift ice, and an embargo bas been led on wuny of our city ferries in consequence, We wore ic hope that mid weathor woula ore vail lomg enongh to et rid ot this ice pulrames, bul the cold of yesterday will andowd edly generate sufficient quaaties of frost water ice toagain G1) our harbor avd cbove wp the channels of our rivers, ‘thos rendering them uorafe to navigate {pr some tim: tocome. Thecloring up of adjacent rivers may be bu & mal! matter to other cities, but to New York amo more especialy to Brooklyn it ts of vital importance, lo consequence of the intimate business and socia\ rela tions of (he two cities. For a week past the Brooklyn people who have bust ners in this city and who do not live mear the Fulton Terry beve been put to the most severe inconvenience and ancoyance by the almost entire ceseation of all the otber ferries which bat eom! occasionly. The Brook lyn city railroads in part made up for thia by furnishing « ‘transit to Falton strosi; but jesterday while nearly att other ferries were stopped there was no way of getting to the Fulton "ferry, as the raliroad, bad orased running on account of an absurd anti sabbath breaking ordinance tn force in the ‘' City of Churohes,”’ Brooklyn extends from Gowanus to Gresa point, @ distance of thirteen miles along the bay and !:xat * giver, aod (# densely populated for from three to ‘ive miles from the shore, yet thie immense ofty is forced, during the continuance of this weather, to depend upon two ferries, one et Graod and the other at Fulton street, ae tbe others run only at intervals. In view of this an- ‘ual stoppage of ferry travel, why not take into con aicoration the propriety of building a couple of bridges to Brooklyn. Engineers tay it ts practicable, amd ¢ ‘Would aimost pay if of use only during the winter months. Doring yesterday there was but one boat on each of the Houston, Grand, Division avenue and Peok slip for- ries. During the forenoon the river was quite tall of toe, ‘and the boats made but few trips. In the sflernoon the northeasterly wind drove = comtiderabie quaatity of bce + down the river, and the boats ran more frequently.
