The lands prociaimed for market are reported to be as fine as avy in lows, and as May ap; hes, when these sales take place, a permanent improvement {n the mar- ket, wo think, must take piace, aniess Congress gives away another slice of the public domain where these lands lie. ‘Tho annexed statement exhibits the quantity of cor tain srticles cleared trom Buifalo by canal in each of the compeny will be officially announced in’ @ few | past bree semsons :— days, and the books will be closed on the Canat Commmnce oy BurvaLo.—Smrmanrs Ease, 2st inetant. This is beyond all question the best paying reilroad stock in the country, and it is sbout the only one in which we baye any faith. It is managed by cau- tous, prudent men. The sales of Erie to day were very large. All the large holders were tree sellers. A glance at the uncertainty which eaperience teaches us bangs over these raiircad corporations, their long career of unparal- leled financiering, through a course of years—in fact, from the day of their inception to the present moment— must make !t clear to the minds of thinking and prudent men how little they are entitled to the coniidence of the community, and upon what en insignificant basis the present price of each and every oneof the above named stocks reete. The principal feature of today’s operations {s the large amount of stock sold, and the Notwithstanding the various causes which have ope- rated against the Maryland ooal trade during the year now ended, the shipments have exoceded the ex- pectations of those interested in the business, and show a considerable increas@ over the amount shipped in 1856, The following interesting particulars we take from the Cumberland Telegraph:— During the year 1856 the quan- tity of coal sent from the Maryland coal region amounted to 664,304 tone, and the quantity shipped during 1856 amounts to 709,329—showing an increase over the former year of 45,025 tons. From the Frostburg coal fields there were transported over the railroad and canal, in 1866, 81,809 tons, and during the last year 400,462 tons— showing an increase of 29,153 tons over the fact that the late buyers have realized on avery large | shipments of the former year. ‘The increase quantity of shares, The shorts have been compolied, | in the George’s Creek region over the pre- from the immense success which has attended the move- | ceding year is 15,872 tons—the shipments ments of buyers, to close up their accounts; but the market 1s repidly approaching a condition where an {mportant re- action is certain to take place, and tt will occur al a timo when the usual source of consumption is out of the mar- ket. The bank loans indicate the usual spring demands for business purposes and the pressing importunities 0 wockjobbers. Let them proceed for a fow weeks on the #ame track and we shall experience one of those disagree- bie changes for which these inatitations are proverbis end responsible, when the public at large are invariably the suflerers, The contraction will be more rapid than (be expansion has been. No day of the season has shown a more tevere demand for money than to day and the genera! poverty bas not been more evident. Toe very bighest prices have been paid for money, and the emaliest cums have been acceptable among the brokers. We do not look for any let up to this money pressure for 1866 beiug 292,996 tons, and for 1856, 308,867 tons. During the year ending 27th December,603,129 tous were conveyed to market by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, ‘and 206,209 tons were abipped by canal, The increased demand for Maryland coal, and the augmented facilitics for transportation will give a greater impetus to the coal trade, and itis confidently believed that a million tons of coni will be despatched castward during the year 1857. Pince the year 1342, when the transportation of this oom- modity was 1,708 toms, to the yoar 1866, when it was 109,529 tons, the aggregate shipments haye been 8,700,703 tons, of which 1,304,602 tons have been, from Jennings’ Run Valley, 1,538,674 from Braddock’s Run Valley, and 867,427 from the Westernport region, The Indiana Daily Sentinel says :— ‘until after the spring trade is over, if in the meantimo | decided, as bas been averred, by the Supreme Cour! tte favor u) the main questions invol im the ise the barks should run their loans aad discounts up to | put y ground that his interest in the old bank, 2116,000,¢C0 or more.
