The Committee on Lands and Places of the Board of Aldermen met in Mr. Valentine's office, City Hall, at 3 P.M., on Thursday—Alderman J. H. Valentine in the chair. The subject before them was the re- lease of the grounds for the Crystal Palace. Peter Y. Catler appeared on behalf of those who desire the Palace to be removed; and John H. White, Re- ceiver of the Crystal Palace, on behalf of those who wisbed it to remain. There was a great deal of irregular conversation between the counsel, while but lite testimony of importance was presented. Mr. Cuter Isid before the committee a statement of the prices for which the lots opposite and adjoining the ground occupied by the Crystal Palace were sold, ee those prices were very large, and owing entirely to the understanding that said grcund was to form a public park. Amos W. Mason was called by Mr. Batler, and, being sworn, said that be was familiar with the prices of the lets on Fortieth and Forty-second streets, bordering on the Crystal Palace, and con- sidered the value of each would be enhanced from $4,000 to $5,000 if the Or | Palace was removed apd the ground occu by it devoted to a public es The lots would then be worth $9,000 each. if the Palace remain they would not be worth over $4,000 or $5,000. He considered the lots woald be more valuable than they are at present if the Crystal Palace was removed and the reservoir ex- teuded over the ground occupied hy it, for then the place would be Lg and first class private resi- dences could be built there. He stated that there are objectionable houses in the vicinity, bat did not — they would remain long, even if the Palace should. | Mr. John M. Smith, ono of the principal owners | of property opposite the Crystal Palace, and also | one of the parties taking an active part to get the removed, being sworn, said that he owned six sts in that locality, that he would consider the value of them increased from fifty to six! Crystal Palace was removed, and pied by it dedicated to » public park. He That he bought bis lote for the purpose of building himeelf a first class private rosideace, but learning that the Oryetal Palace was to be built there, he gave up his intention, and the lots have taid idle he ground occu- stated und useless ever since. He objected tothe character “ the boa rem that had been pot ap since the to the chasacter of the inmates of many of them. Ile would preter to have the ground occupied by the extension of the reservoir, than to have the palace remain, as it would be more with the reservoir, and better adapted for private residences. Other witnesses were sworn, but their testimony addnced no new facts, and the committee adjourned till Tuesday next at 3 P. MABITIME INTELLIGENCE. Movements ef Urcan Steamers, rom SULOPR.
