FOWLER, P. M. FINANCIAL, AND COMMERCIAL. MONK MARKET. Tavurspar, Aug. 21-6 P. M. The European advices are not calculated to strengthen confidence in the future course of finan- cial affairs on this side of the Atlantic. Our latest accounts report a growing stringency in the Euro- pean money markets, and the advent of a mania for speculation. The rates of interest were more likely to advance than recede, and the abundaace of the harvests had created an active demand for money. The movements in bullion were not of a satisfactory character. The demand for the Conti- nent and for the East continued active, and the Bank of England parted with supplies as soon as re- ceived. The bullion on hand showed no increase, notwithstanding the large importations. It is re- ported by the last arrival that the country banks of Great Britain were drawing largely on London to supply the demand for money from the agricultural classes, and that this demand would continue active until the new crops had been dispos- edof. A similar movement is going on here. The country benks are drawing down their deposits to aid the formers, and it will probably continue throughout the fall months. After that, we may look for another accumulation of deposits to the credit of the country hanks, and a supply of money in excess of the demand. Tha‘ a stringency in the money markets on both sides of the Atlantic, for several weeks, will be realized, there is very little doubt. The effect upon stock se:urities can be easily anticipated. We are in a much better condition, financially, than either Great Britain or France. Speculation here is dormant, while throughout Bu. rope it is in active operation. In France it has already absorbed an immense amount of capital, and in Great Britain it is rapidly spreading. Pro- jects involving investments to the amount of twenty- five to thirty millions sterling, have already been Preeented, ard the public takes Lold of them with avidity. An increasing stringency in the money market may check this movement. The Bank of England cannot make any further reduction in the rate of interest so long as this activity in specula- tion continues and it is not at all improbable that an advance in rates may be resorted to for the pur- pose of arresting further inflation. The tightness of the London money market is cal- culated to give a greater impetus to the shipment of gold from this country. It can be shipped ata profit at lower rates of exchange, and we should not be surprised to see more activity in the movement of bullion. The rapid and steady decline in con- sola is the best evidence of the increasing stringency in money matters in London. A falling off of about three-quarters per cent in four days shows that the most serious ap- prehensions are entertained relative to the fature in financial af@eirs. This state of things will puta stop, for the present, to foreign investments on this side of the Atlantic. The accumulation of foreign capital, reported to have been going on fur some months, cannot continue with an increase in the value of money in London. If the stringency in London does not progress far enough to call home capital from this country, we shall escape a terious contraction. As it is, and under the most favorable circumstances, the demand for money here is likely to be greater than can be easily snp- plied. Our local affairs will require all the capital wecan command, at the highest rates of interest. The probability of our finaneial difficulties being in- creased by the condition of finances in England and on the Continent is already sufficiently strong to excite considerable alarm. The stock market opened and closed heavy this morning. Tiere was # good deal of activity, and an unusnal amount of cash business was transacted at the first board. New York Central Railroad fell off | per cent; Erie, j; Reading, {; Michigan South- erp, j. Virginia 6’s advanced 4 per cent; Nicaragua Transit, }. Tlinois Central bonds opened and closed without change. The stock sold at 109j per cent, cath, and the privileges at 113 per cent. The ab sorption of the stock on foreign account is going on steadily. There are a good many orders here limit- ed below the market, but every steamer brings higher offers; and aa the amount held here for sale is small, the probability is that it will all be taken at our own prices. The sales of Brie were large today, but it closed ata quarter better than the opening There was a good deal of cash stock in the marke to-day, and it will without doubt be plenty enong on the opening. After the adjournment of the board the followiag sales of bonds and stocks were made at auction by Albert H. Nioolay:— $10,000 Shelby County, Hinolw Te... Tut. added. 70% 16,000 Great Western RR.
