Our Washington Correspondence, Wasurneton, Aug. 9, 1856. The Catholic Vote at the Presidential Election— | Archbishop Hughes and Postmaster General Campbell— Wonderful Conversions—-Campbell's New Born Catholico-Herbernian Proclivities, §c. Seme few weeks since it was stated ina New ‘York paper devoted to the interests of our Catholic citizens_that the refusal of the democratic members of the House of Representatives to investigate the circumstances connested with the shooting of the waiter, Keating, by the Hon. P. T, Herbert, a mem- ber of that body, had forfeited the further support of that journal in behalf of the candidates and mea- sures of the democratic party. The most significant feature in this threat was the declaration that the matter was taken in hand by a person who usually attended to things of that sort in a proper manner. it was generally understood, at the time, that a cer- tain high and infuential dignitary in the Catholic cberch, residing in New York, was alluded to; and certain indications, of rather a decided character, since that period, have given significancy and {m- portance to the meaning of the New York payer's paragraph. Within the past few days, however, Postmaster General Campbell has authoritatively declared that he is in regular and confidential cor- reapondence with that church functionary, and that he is assured by him that the Cathoii« voters of the United States’ will, to a man, eupport the demo- cratic nomination. Certain gentlemen in Washington who have been toadying to en ge since his advent to power in ‘this » and wi have, in Consequence, been wored in the sinecure bureau of the General Post Office, have displayed much gg in giving out the idea, so thar it may reach Mr. Buchanan's ears, that Mr. Campbe!) hvlds at bis disposal the vast influence which the dignitary alluded : ae estional pssesses with the Cut rolic portion of Sertelow tuleeas, bets native and adooted. The whole story is believed to be a fat tion. Tt ts Scouted even by those to whom it is courdenti revealed for the purpore of continciug Campbell in power, in the event of Mr. Buchanan's election, Intelligent Cavbolies bere are unwilling to credit the alleged confidential relutions betweeu Campbell and the distinguished New York courch dignitary, whose intimacy and correspondence are thas Vaunted, and they treat with contempt aud ridicule his (Campbell's) prete sions t, auy degree of in- fluence with either Catholic or advpted citizens. The general impression among that class, as far as I can learn—for it is not my fortune © belong to it myerelf—is that Campbeli is too 101 uise as having any claims upon bi class of citizens to wnom his appointment ia tae Cabinet was most certainly chanred. f This has been a svbject of public and general re mark since it leaked out, shortly ufier the adminis- tration came into power, that the appoint nent of Mr. Punch, then editor of the Savannah Georgian, as Postmaster of that city, after having been de- cided and ordered by the President, was subsequent- ly revoked at the instance of Postmaster General i and bestowed ov a Savannah Jew, because “Punch was an Irishman and a Catholic. and the ap- —— would raise a storm against the admjnis- The film goon fell from their eyes respecting Cam; Catholicity and infivence with Catholic prelates, when they beard Mr. Punch publicly de- clare that Campbeil was undecided in his case until he had received eter from Bishop Gartland, not even sternmctiding bim to the appointment, but pce dd to his high mora! character. and his popularity in that section of Georgia. If | hear any more about Campbell's alleged con- mtial correspondence with this New York it which I den't believe a word, for Archbishop Hughes is too shrewd a man to trust James Campbell, of Pennsylvanin—I +bal!l have to call on that distinguished prelate to come out pub- licly and contradict the whole story over his proper signature. The fl- lowing is @ brief abstract of the communication:— ‘The bids were reported to the Common Council, show- ing that John M. Grane was the lowest bidder; subse- quently, complaints were made that the estimate of quan tiles Was erroneous, aud that fair competition was pre vented by an apprehension, on the part of some. that the estimate of quantities could pot be relied op. !p conse- quence of those represcntations the Street Comuussioner und Comptroller determined to have a re-survey of the job by two competent city surveyors, ana John J. Sor- rel! and R Graves were selected for the purpose. Tae effect of these great errors in the estimate of quantities is Ulustratea by the fuct that Mr. Minturn, whose bid, ac- corcug tormih's survey, stands at $10,806, and Mr. Hurre’s at $19,081, whereas, by the survey of G aod Serreti, Mintorn’s bids woula amount to $33,301, whilst Hurne’s bids are only $26,000. The Comp troller and Street Commissioner haye understood that one responsible contractor declined to bid, from a vel that the estimate by which bids were to be tested, were erroneous in some of the most expenrive items.
