§ FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, MONEY MARKET. Togspay, Aug. 12—6 P. M. There was avery active market at the first board today. The sales of Erie sum up about eight thou- sand shares, of Reading nearly six thousand shares, of New York Central nearly two thouaand shares, and 60 on down among the smaller stocks, There appears to be a great anxiety to realize, and the sales were in large lots. The decline was quite general, and in eome instances to eome extent. linois Central bonds fell off { per cent; Delaware and Hudson, 4; ‘Canton Company, 4; New York Central Railroad, }; Erie, 14; Reading, 1); Michigan Central, 4; Michi- gan Southern, 3; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 3; Cleve- land and Toledo, 1; Chtcago and Rock Island, #; Papama, 24. Cumberland advanced j per cent. Galepa and Chicago closed firm, without change. Clinois Central Railroad vas steady, with moderate sales. The quantity of cach stock offered to-day took ‘he shorts by surprise, but it only helped along the downward movement. it supplied the bears for the moment, but as they imm» diately deliver on their mataring contracts, it does not relieve the market in the least, but on the contrary rather de- presces prices, by forcing weak parties to take stock without being able to keep it. It is impossible to tell where the bottom of the market is just now. Of the leading railroads, there is ptovably more than doable se much stock in Wall street at this moment than at the same time last year The annexed com- parative quantities show about the amount in the market in the month of August this year and last. Chicago and Rock island —Last year at this time outsiders were disposed to buy and able to hold, and they relieved the market materially. At that tin e there was comparatively a small amount of stock in the street. The corner in Michigan Southern, in Clevelund and Toledo, and in Chicago and Rock Isiand, teuded to the concentra- tion of large lots of the stock of each company in the broker's hands, and it has no: since been distri- bated. The pressure upon the market is, therefore likely to be very great when the pinch commences. There ace no outsiders now to help the brokers carry stecks, and this, with the additional amount held on speculation, makes it a difficult matter to manage. Outside operators, who last year at this time held thousands of shares of the prominent rall- road etocks, have not now a single share. When prices touch very low points, there will undoubtedly be a moderate outside demand; but that time is a great way off. after the first Bs 33: Ses = leving Bauk..... 4 Mechanics’ Bank. 2 000, 00. oeenine. It afterwards rallied, and closed at 68}. Several thousand shares changed bands at the decline, and the improvement was no- ‘thing more than a natural reaction after such a rapid falling off. At the second board stocks were freely offered at low points. Compared with prices cur- rent at the first board, Erie declined } per cent; New York Central, 4; Reading, 4; Canton Compa- oy, 4; Illinois Ceptral bonds, 3. More than two taousand bares of Erie and three thousand shares ef Reading were sold at our quotations. At the final close some stock were an eighth or so better, but more freely offered. Operators at a distance who may be disposed to take a line for a rise at cur- rent rates, would do well to pause, and think twice before they act. The money market is rapid- \y bardening. The demand tur money is daily be- coming more active, and today a commission was paid for loans. This has rot been kaown before for months, and shows that the demund is beyond the supply, Tbe Boston steamer to-morrow takes ont about $700,000 in specte, and tue California remtt- taace will not be in so as to help the bank average mach this week. The Sub-Treasnry is drawing largely. Yesterday and to-day about three-quarters of @ million was paid jn for duties, and the importa- tions continue very heavy. The shipment by the Arabia, from Boston, to-morrow, for Liverpool, and (be payments into the Sub-Treasury in the past two days, are equal in amount to the entire California cemittance now due. The banks will not, therefore be benefited in the least by the next California actival. This shows the extent of the expansion, and the danger of a severe contraction. The increase of banking capital is going on steadily. The Irving Bank has just added $100,000 to its capi- tal, without calling upon the public to take a dellar. ‘This bank is gradually but permanently making its way up, and increasing its capital as fast as its busi- ness actually requires. Among the larger banks there isa great desl of rivalry and competition. They are all making efforts to increase their capital, and get ahead of each other, and im the race lose sight of the caution and prudence which should charac- terize all banking operations. The aggregate deficiency is increasing instead of diwi- nishing, and there is no corresponding increase to make it ap from other regions. The rates by the Philadelphia railroad will be ad- vanced to $2 perton on and after the lst of Sep- tember—the canal also advances the tol! oa the ist of September.
