FINANCIAL ‘L_ AND COM! COMMERCIAL, MONEY MARKET, : Tvwepar, August 5—6 P.M. The stock market took aiother tam downward this morning, and quite a large amount of business was transected. The disposition to sell is extending and daily becoming stronger. The transactions at the first board to-day were quadruple those of yes- terday, at lower prices all round. Pennsylvania Coal fell off } per cent; New York Central Railroad, 4: Erie; 4; Reading, 2; Michigan Southern, }; Gleveland end Pittsburg, 4; Cleveland and Toledo, 4; Milwankle and Mississippi, 4. New York Central, Erie, and Reading were sold freely at the decline, ‘end closed heavy. We do not see any other alterna- tive in the stock market bat lower prices. Any outside demand for the leading speculative stocks is almost oat of the question, at any prices. Those among the commercial classes who have heretofore occasionally entered into stock speculations, have Bow a4 much as they can do to attend to their own financial affairs, and must leave stocks to take care of themselvea. We have, in the future, financial difficulties of the most serious im » With a bank expansion the first week im Angust of more than one hundred and twelve mil- lions of dollars, what can be expected in September ‘and October but the reverse of the present plethora im the money market? With a line of discounts more than twelve millions greater than at the same date last year, and in the dullest season for trade in the year, when the payments of the merchants are comparstively limited, what must we have in Sep- tember and October to keep ap the present ease and abundance? In Angust last year, when the com- Mercia] classes were not in want of money, when was inactive, and when no liabilities of any were maturing, the banks of this city run Dp 8 discount line of one hundred and one millions of dollars, and in October, when every one wanted money, when al) the spring contracts were maturing, when there was a real bona fide demand for money for legitimate purposes, the banks redaced their dis- oount line to ninety-four millions of dollars. A decrease of seven millions of dollars from the dullest to the most active business season of the year was an operation which produced a serious state of things in the money market, and ceased s good many failures. The movements of our banks should be completely reversed. In Angust they should have s moderate discount line, and in October the expansion should be at the high- eat point; but the wise heads controlling the move- ments of these machines, for purposes directly op- posed to the interests of the mercantile classes, force out their money when no one wants it, and call it in whem everybody requires it We look for the same course of events this year. We are now almost at the extreme limit of bank expansion, and money is very abundant. The supply is largely in excess of the demand, and the p lic mind has become confident and apparently indifferent to the future. The present plethora has continued so long that mo one ecems to dream of a change. For more than ten weeks the banks have been ex- Panding at the rate of more than one million per week. Such an expansion, through the sammer months, is well calculated to produce a piethora in the money market. If the expansions shouli con- tinue at the came rate, all through the fall months, it would not follow that the money market would re- main easy; for an active demand, in active business geasons, commences in September, and runs all throagh October into November. What, then, can be expected, under « contraction in loans? Those interested in the matter had better look about in time, and govern themselves accordingly. There are large operators in Wall street who have the most distinct recollection of the course of prices in the stock market, during the months of October and November, for the past two years, and there is very little doubt but that they wil! avoid the rocks some of them then split upon. The months of October apd November, 1554 and 1555, were most disastrous to the holders of stocks, and, if we are any judge of the signs of the times, the same montas this year are likely to prove the same. Atnoon to-day A. H. Nicolay offered for sale ‘auction, under the direction of J. 8. Libby, receiver, several notes, bouds and interest in real estate, of P. 7. Barnum. At present money is gradi easy and abundant ennne and is not likely to eahauce in value immediately, but there is certainly a very fair ba "ieee money will be in better the Tater belvg ‘a little in excess of the demand seem that railroads had alreaay veclined about enough to find bottom, but there is a want of confidence towards thet with investors and they will not venture further where so much has already sunk. This is more particu larly the case with such as make no returns to the stock holders as year after year passes by. It is not strange, therefore, that such stocks decline gradually 30 to 60 per ceot Below the par value, and even then sellers are desirous of parting with their shares from fear that they will go to almost ni , &8 others have done b: tore them. As ccmpared wit week since, the only rail- road stocks which bave advanced are Western, 1!, per cent; Maine, *{; Michigan Central, ‘/, and Eastern, {. while Prov idence, Worcester, Cheshire, Concord aud Fitchburg bave aj! declined, and several other largest decline has boon, ip Fitebbu: bid for cash stock. From present ap- pearances the shares are likely to go lower unless the cor- poration sbould bay up their own stock and sustain the market value, as was done successtully in the case of the Old Colony, and in some degree by other corporations.
