2 eee eo FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MOREY MARKET. Fumay, April 26—6 P. M. ‘The market opened and closed quite buoyant this mora- img. All the leading railroad etocks were in active de- mand, and sold to an unususl extent. New York Cen- ‘wai, Erie, Readirg, Mich’gan Southern and Cleveland And’Toledo were the leading stocks at the first board. ‘Fhe last named was operated in largely, and there ap- ‘Pears to be no limit to the ability of buyers to take and earry the stock. They have bagged and paid for several ‘thousand shares, and sre ready to take all that offers ‘and withdraw it from the market. According to their Seas, the stock is a good investment at eurrent prices, and they are therefore willing to hold to the extent of their available means, The shorts are by m0 means in a comfortable position, They have suffered cme thus far, and ihe impreasion is that they will have ‘wo pey reurdly for stock to fullil all contracts outetand- mg. The bears operare with a stock without regard to ‘the changes that may from tite to time take place in ‘ite condition and position, and thet accounts for the Jonces they have experieuced within the past six or eight menths. Cleveland and Toledo Railroad stock {s now sell ‘ng at $40 86 per cent, and New York Cantral at 92 a 83 per cent. Both are eight per cent dividend paying stocks, end itis our firm belief that eme fs just as good as the other. In our opinion there is not one per cent to choose ‘between them. It therefore follows that » market thet can sustam New York Central at 92 a 93 per sent, certainly rhould sustain Cleveland and Foledo at prices above those now current. Michigan Southern was lower to day. The sellers wore some pro- miment parties who a few days simce were large par- shavers, If they continue the present movement, stock to some extent will come upon the market. Erie opened pretty firm, but closed weaker. The sales were large. New York Central sold up to 93; per cent, oath. Prices # fraction below that p'int brought out a good deal of stock, and it oloced dull and heavy. Reading has been wnsteady for some weeks. The daily transactions are Jarge and the fluctuations do not amount to much; but sellers are successful in heepirg prices down, and no doubt will continue #o until the coal trade becomes mere active and the weekly returns of tonnage show an increase on Inst year’s operations. At the second board the market was slightly depressed. New Vork Central Railroad declined 3 per cent; Chisago ad Rock Island %{. Clevoland/and Toledo sold at 8234, seller ten days. Only fifty snares were offered, and we waderstand that the large:t holders are buyers, seiler’s option ae well as at buyer's option. They are prepared, we believe, to take it any way to suit sellers. For pur- ebasers on time, prepared to take tue stock, seller's op ‘Mon Is far tbe bes: way to buy ot this stage of the market. We notice » sale of fifty shares of Wisconsin Lake Shore this afternocn at 723; per cent, each. ‘Tre Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as follows: — Paid on Treasury account, +3173,183 18 eo 55,075 96 = 321216 76 Pua ne Asssy Office 4015 10 Paid on disoursing ck 45,870 21 ‘The warrants entered at the Tressury Department, Washington, on the 23d inst., were as follows : For the redemption of stocks. The acnexed statement exhibits the qcan‘ity and valoe ef foreign dry goods entered at thia port for eonsump on, for warehoure, and also the withdrawals from ware- Rouse, during the week ending and inolading Thursdey April 24, 1856:— Movewests iv Forman Dey Goons. With the great prosperity induced Dy the high prices of Southern grown prodacta, it is ber jleved that the coming trade for the fall season from the South and Southwest, will be ona large scale. Cotton, at this time, is at lenet $5 per bale higher than lt wars month sg, andar there is probably faily » million of she past crop remaining ic the evuntry, the adyance ‘n 6 single month would mabea difference in faver of the country of abart $5,000,000, Rice and tebacco have also Ddorne bigh prices. The only staple like’y to suffer by the peace im Europe, is hemp, which during the war ruled enormwusly high. But this, im eomparison to the value of cotton, but a small item. During the past week one of the staples of the Northwest, pork, has revived, and may do something towards reducing the losses to which dealers have been exposed, while the decline im breadstuffa we fear is cbronic. It will te difficult for Western and Nerthwesiern merchants to pay off liabiNties contrasted in New York for goods, with corn delivered in this cfty at 60c. and Ofc. per bushel, which probably cost over that sum in Chicago, or with flour at 98a $6 25 per barre!, which Jast autumn and the early part of winter, cost more money at the /,West. Owing to the previous two or three years having been, commercially speaking, very succevsful, and the early part of the past season having given gooil profits, mer- chants have borne their losses, in that direction, much better and with fewer failures than might otherwire bave been expected. The opening of the State canals to the lakes next month will give ® temporary impulse to trade, especially in the buikler clazs.of goods, requiring cheap transportation. At lest accounts, English ma- Wiactarers were firm im their views, expecting wa increase of trade im the eastern sections of Enrope subsequent to the conclesion of peace. The news frcm India, China and Australia was also good. ‘The annnal yield of goid in the latter country, for 1655, to January, 1856, amounted to the larg? san, for the Victoria istrict, ofedout $53,000,000. Tre fea- ture of the trade, for the past twa weeks, in this market, has been the slaughter of goods at the au:tion stores. ‘This, however, cannot last much longer, as the auc‘ion season is also drawing towardsa let up. The chiefde- cline has been witnessed on ight fancy goods; while lines ef staple goods have mauifosted greater stability. The enbanced prices of both cotton and wosl mus: soener or later produce an advance in the value of gocds produced from them, and hence, unembarrassed holders need feel no fear from refraining to preas sales, or to await the re- turning of the tide. The exports of domestic goods from this port, for the week endirg the 15th inst., amounted to 989 packages, amounting to $42,179 in value, and from Beston, 3,439 packages. In brown eheetings and shirt- ings we have no change of moment to notice, while sales were moderate at 729. @ 8c., for heary, andat 07¢0. a So. for light. Bleached sheetings and shirtiogs, except for weil known manufscturers’ marks, were doll, and with mocerate rales at earier rates. Drills were 8 acd firm, at 8¢, for brown, '$*c. for bieached, and 9%; 3. for blue. Corse} jeans were in moder: Osnaburgs of desirable styles were nime, stcek light, with » tinited demand. Stripes and ticks were without change worthy of notice. Ia duck, Tavene were quick, while in other kinds holders were not pressing eaies, on account of the advance in the raw material being in excess of curreat prices for the mana- factured article. In other articles, such as printiog cloths, prints, lawns, ginghams, cloths, cassimeres, tweeda and jeans, linens, &:., the changes have not bsea of sufficient importanes to require notice in detail. The season for mouselin delaines has measurably past. As regards foreign goods the businces has been tolerably quick with jobbers, but importations have crowded the market, and free sales have been made a: euction, wich a tendency to easier rates, Stock Exchange. We feel dispored to congratulate our readers—that i+ the poor ones—on the condition of things inthe retail markets. There ina tencexcy in all produes to lower in price that must be very gratifying to them. Meat does not show much chaoge, though corned meats ‘endveal are cheaper by two cents per pound. Mutton is a trifle higher, and altogetber too-dear for the season. Poultry and game is, if anything, dearer. Spriog eiekens are coming in fast, ee are also large quantities ‘of wild pgeon. Fish are very cheap compsred wi'h what they were all last winter, and the prospect is that they will be cheaper still They have fallen from two to four conte per pouad. The folowirg commenication from an in‘elligeat esrrea pondent contains an important tact, though shad are not ae high as he thinks they are. Very fine shadcan be ha! for 30 cents a piece:— Many families bave been puzzled to know the cause of the high price of shad the present season, and some sup that the usual caten had failen off This is the ight of the shad reason, 234 we find that a good sha: costs 43% centa, which in former years could be bought at 18%%c. s 26c. We ljearn from an old fan dealer that the present bigh price of shad arises from the fact that the Erie Railroad every morning carries off from 8,009 to 10,000 Iregltna a buticn in the interior of the State and at totne Harlem and New Jersey railroads als> distribnte considerable quantities. AB. Butter is getticg cheap. The season bas been back- ward, but it is making up for it fast. There is a fair supply of whive butter in market, which, from its perchabie character, has to be sold off quickly, Tae yellow butter—the oniy kind that can be shipped—vill not be in for two cr three weeks yet, and the butter trade will not fairly commence until then. Strate butter is now 2c. per lb., and Orange county 25¢, @ 23e.—tole- rably cheap compared with former prises. Eggs are seiling for from nino to ten for ® shilling. So rejorce, ye pudding eaters. Apples don’t sell and don’t deserve to, for, with the exception of the spi zenberge, they are very poor, anc not fit touse. The season is over, Vegetables loom up finely, The markes begins to look like spring in. this department, Water cresse1, radishes, salad, leeks, &c., have made their appearance, and 11 cannot be long before tomatoes and grezn pasa will be around.
