The American Board of Foreign Missions. Atpany, March 5, 1856. ‘The American Board of Foreign Missions met last even- ing in special session in this city—Hon. Theodore Frelinghuysen in the chair, Notwithstanding the storm, a large number of delegates were present. The report of the deputation of the Board to India was read in part. ‘The report presents a full exhibition of the practical workings of the missions of the Board. Adjourned. The Board re-assembled at 9:30 this (Wednesday) morning, and the peering, of the report of the deputation to India was resumed. It is contemplated to abandon the mission at Madras, the great aim of the deputation ere send the gospel to the villages of Southern in In regard to the schools, it 1s reported that the pupils in the Mahmatta. Mirtion numbered 2000; in the Le dura, 4,000, and in the Ceylon 6,000, but the number is now declining. The teachers all heathen, and it is questionable whetber they were the most ‘desirable agents, In the Mahmatta Missien not a single conversion could be pointed out among 10,000 pupils, and in the Ceylon not more than thirty in 30,000. ‘The report states, in regard to the system of educa- uuon, that the plans have been laid for a general system for the masses The report was referred to a select committee, con- ting of Hon. Thomas Williams, Hon. Linus Childs, Hon. Reuben Hyde, Chancellor Walworth, Rev. . . Taylor, Rey. A. D. Smith and Harvey Ely, Esq. ‘At the afternoon session the Board took up the resolu- tions reported by the select committee, The resolutions declare that the natives, pastors and teachers are the chief instruments in the proclamation of divine truth, and that the schools and the press are auxiliaries thereto. In regard to the action of the Prudential Committee— which is the main point of interest—the ‘select commit- tee, without interfering with their action, recommend the appointment of a committee of thirteen to whom shall be referred the report on the Taniel missions, made at the last annual meeting of the Board, and the report of the deputation, presented at this meeting, with power to in- vestigate and report at the next annual meeting of the Board.
