NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, MARCH 6, 1856, 3 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MaKKET, Wepyespay, March 5—3 P. M. ‘There was rather a heavy market to-day at the stock exchange. ‘The transactions were not large, but lower prices ruled throughout the list. At the tirst board Virginia 6's fell off { per cent ; Illinois ‘Central bonds, 1; Canton Company, J; Pennsylvania Coal Company, }; Cumberland Company, }; Erie, 4; | Milwaukie and Mississippi Railroad, }; Reading, 7: Michigan Central, 1; Panama, $; Cleveland sod Pittsburg, 4 ; Cleveland and Toledo, } ; Chicago and ‘Rhode Island, 4. Nicaragua Transit was the only stock on the market at all buoyant ; that advanced $ percent. Galena and Chicago was firm at yester” day's prices. No one in the street is able to give any satisfactory reuson for the decline to-day. It is attributeg by some to the shipment of specic by the steamship Asia. The small amount exported by that steamer could hardly have been the cause for such a depreciation. Had the shipment been a mullion or two, the effect would not have been mistaken. The money market has expe- rienced no change; the banks are steadily ex tending their loans; the specie reserve is unu sually large; the season for active business is about opening, and the embargo under which nearly the whole country has been placed by the ice and snow during the past two months is about being removed cand we are about entering upon a period of pros perity unparalleled in our history. These things should give great buoyancy to the stock market, but they appear just now to be operating just to the contrary. Compared with the speculative period of last summer, prices generally rule at low points. The margin for a rise is large enough to satisfy or- dinary ideas before the market value current last August and September is reached, and we see no good reason why, with the same influences, with a greater bank expansion, with money much easier, with a better basis in every particular, an inflation of equal importance should not be realized. All the elements of speculation are in a very favorable condition, and it is our impression that sooner or later there will be an expansion in prices and an active speculative excitement at the Stock Ex change. After the adjournment of the board the following sales of stocks were made at auction:— 60 shares Manhattan Fire Insurance Co,..1363 to 13734 39 Equitable Fire insurance Co, 174 10 Howard Fire Insurance Co........ 40 Krickarbocker Fire Insurance Co. 46 New York Gas Light Co.. ‘ire Ipauranre Oo, 10 Nisgara Fare Insurance Co. , 20 Metropolitan Fire Insurance Co, 25 Six h Avenue Rairoad, #0 Lev: x Fire Inaurance Co, 55 Manhe. 30 New York County Bank 16 Santw Clara Mining asi, # Of $1,000.08 ceeceeree Albert H. Nicolay’s regular semi-weekly auction sate o€ stocks and bonds will take place to-morrow, (Thursday) at 12} o'clock, at the Merchants’ Ex- change. The catalogue will include about $80,000 first class bonds, besides other desirable stocks. At the second board the market was still further ‘depreesed, and the operations were limited. Reading ‘declined } per cent; Galena and Chicago, j; Harlem, 4; Michigan Central, }. The only stocks on the list at all steady were Wisconsin Lake Shore Railroad and Nicaragua Transit Company. The market closed weak with a downward tendency. We understand that at a meeting of the directors of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company on the 3d of March, Mr. Wm. W. Aspinwall submitted his ‘resignation as Presiaent of the company, to take ‘effect March 6. He stated at the same time that tthe difficulties and embarrassments of the last two years bad alone restrained him from taking this step before, but that it must be a source of congra: talation to all concerned that these no longer exist- ed, and that the preseht independent position of the company and the prospects of continued success authorized his executing his intention. He reported briefly on the condition of the pro- perty of the company—that the commercial agency of Messrs. Howland & Aspinwall was surrendered by them 1st January, and the balance paid off; tha since the company has paid all disbursements in cash and has at present a balance of two hundred thousand dollars in the Life and Trust Company, besides a balance for current expenses in Bank of America, and $95,000 earned and due, mostly from government. After referring to the condition of the steamers’ vessels, and the works of the company at Benecia, as being excellent, he reported two facts which can- not fail to be interesting to stockholders, as well as ‘the public— that on the mail route between Panama and San Francisco, under the contract with the government, the company had never failed to per- form a single mail trip, nor lost the pay for a single mail trip, and that in the experience of more than seven years, during which probably 150,000 passen- gers had been transported by the company, not one life had been lost by marine disaster. It would be difficult to find a parallel of these facta on any ocean ‘mail route, and they acquire double weight from the movelty of the service and the distance and length ‘of the route of the Pacific Mail Steamship Com. pany. The President paid a high compliment to the employes of the company in the Pacific, many of whom had been attached to it through all vicis- situdes. Mr. Aspinwall’s place will be supplied by Mr. William H. Davidge as President, well and favo- rably known as Secretary of the Company since its organization; and Mr. I. W. Raymond, known here and in California favorably as connected with the active management of steamers, who will act as Vice President. ‘The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as fol tows =— Paid on Treasury account $178,162 00 Receivedon do. 670,203 00 Balance cn do. 3,873,058 96 Paid for Arsay office... 107 393 35 Paid on disbursing checes.... 259,055 93 The receipts to-day include $500,000 transferred from the bullion fund.
