FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. m BY MARKE?. Wepmeapar, Feb, 6—6 P. M. ‘The stock market was active this morning, but tthe tendency of prices was downward. There was Bo important variation in quotations. At the first board Virginia 6's declined { per cent; ayer 4; Nicaragua Transit, }; Reading Railroad, i; Pa- nama Railroed,¢; New York Central Railroad, $; Hartford and New Haven, }. Michigan Southern Opemed af 91 and closed at 91f per cent. The acti- vity im this stock is much talked of. We cannot learn that any broker in the street is buying for his Own acoount The orders are all from the outside, ‘and from parties able to take every share purchased, ‘The transactions to-day in this stock were larger than we have known for many years. Very important con- nections are about being made by the company, aud those who were early posted were the first in the field as purthasers. This is no Wall street bub- ble, but one of those phases in the history of pro- Tainent railroad companies, which parties occupying favorable positions avail themselves of to great advantage. The Detroit connection is considered by those who know most about these matters, a movement of the highest importance, and as that appears to be the basis of the heavy purchases of the stock, it must be admitted that it is something more than a proba- bility. There were sales of Milwaukie and Missis- sippi today at 8383) per cent. Phe aggregate was made up of small lots. The great trouble with this stock is its scarcity. Holders have n> desire to sell, and orders in the hands of brokers remain for weeks unsatisfied. Galena and Chicago was sold to-day more freely than usual, without change in prices. It closed at 110} per cent, buyer 60 days. This stock is so well known that parties wishing to purchaze do not stand about one or two per cent. Erie was not so strong to-day, but the fluctuations do not alarm holders or speculators for a rise, It is destined'to touch much higher points before the lapse of many days. It is our firm belief that at cur- rent rates Erie is about the cheapest rallroad stock on the list. We notice the sale of a small lot of Chiriqui Coal Company stock to-day at 26 per cent. | A small jot was sold yesterday at the same figure. Thisis the company we allnded to a few days since. Its coal resources are said to be inexhaustible, but the mining of an immense quantity of coal is not at all neceasary. We have shown that the sale of | 100,000 tons per annum wiil give the stockholders | a dividend of thirty-three per cent. Its coal lands could not be more favorably located. Occupying a | position midway between San Juan del Norte, Nica- Tagua and Aspinwall, the supply of those ports could be made at once, almost without any outlay of capital. Contiguous to Jamaica and Havana, those ports would look to this company for supplies. The importance of this coal deposit to our steam marine, if it be as extensive as represented, cannot be over estimated. Its value must be equal to all the other mineral resources of the country, for it will lead to their developement. It is not only important that a proper supply of coal should be found in that locali- ty, but that it should be so accessible. It lies directly on the banks of the lagoon, and on a large island in the lagoon, and can be cheaply and expeditiously mined. It is the only coal fit for fuel which has ever been discovered in that region, and the Chiriqui lagoon is represented to be the only safe harbor on the coast between Nicaragua aud Aspinwall. At the recond board the market was altogether better. Erie was firm at 533 per cent. Michigan Southern advanced to 91}; Nicaragua Transit went up 4 per cent; Reading Railroad, 4; Chicago and Rock Iatand, 4; Cleveland and Toledo, j. The ab- pence of the steamer serves to depress the market. Notwithstanding the favorable complexion of the last advices, people who are afraid of their own shadow cannot be expected to have confidence enough to operate when later news is 80 near at hand. Ifthe steamer should not arrive until Satur- day, this class of speculators will werk themselves up into # regular panic. We should not be sur prised to see consols 91 per cent by the steamers now due. After the board, 533 was bid for Erie; Reading, 874 bid, 873 asked; Galena and Chicago, 1094 bid, 1093 asked. Michigan Southern sold in the street at 924, bayer 30 days. The Assistant Treasurer reports to-day as fol- lows :— Paid on Treasury acount, « $171,833 65 Received do. +. 111,364 42 Balance do. . 1, 763,863 77 Paid for Array office .. 96,368 02 Paid on disbursing checks. ciscece | O27 35 The warrants entered at the Treasury Department, Washington, on the 2d inst., were as foliows:— For the gfemption of stocks .. $2,331 21 For the Department 3,666 98 For tke In erior bepertsent, oo 38,895 57 For Castoma 44804 39 Interior repay Warran’é received and entered. 3,383 61 From mi-cliancous sources. 80,621 89 The steamship Africa, from this port for Liverpool to-day, carried out $303,941 75 in specie. This ie the first shipment of consequence this year. The closing quotations for sterling exchange to-day were 84 a 53 per cent premium. It is announced by the telegraph that the Texas Debt bill has passed both houses of the Legislature of that State. It passed on the 30th of January. It ig reported that the late State Treasurer of Wis- consin is a defaulter to the extent of $39,000. The Watertown and Rome Railroad Company have declared a dividend of ten per cent, payable in stock; the Kni.kerbocker Stage Company, five per cent, cash; Pennsylvania Coal Company, five per cent. The receipts of the Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Company, in January, were $77,713, being an in- crease of $15,860 over those of January, 1354, or 26 per cent. The receipts in January, 1854, were $41,500; January, 1855, $61,553; January, 1856, $77,713. ‘The total earnings of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company for the year 1856, were $4,270,015 56, From this amount the deductions of tolls on several railroads are to be made, which leaves the year’s Dasiness $3,538,333 29. After the expenses are de- @ucted, the net profits of the company amount to $1,829,277 64. The capital is $12,355,525; debta, $7,519,096 64. At the annual meeting of the stockholders of the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the following Board of Directors was elected:—President, W. W. ; Managers, John T. Johnston, Wm. H. Getemer, J.G. Fell, Asa Packer, E. A. Packer and D.Barnet. The Lehigh Valley Railroad is the Penn- syivania extension of the New Jersey Central Rail- The following is a statement of the condition of the banks of the United States at dates nearest to the first of January, 1856. The Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank of this city has just put forth its fifth annual report. The trustees received in all 1865, from 8,167 depositors, $062,720 49, and of these 2,270 were new acconnts. Tn the same period the sum of $548,008 43 has beea withdrawn by 7,343 depositors, of whom 1,670 have closed their accounts. The depositors are classi- fied:—293 minors, 236 domestic servants, 215 la- borers, 132 clerks, 70 tailors, 64 seamstresses, 67 porters, 63 pedlers, 52 clergymen, 63 shoemakers, and the remainder in small numbers of various claszes. The great majority of the depositors are Insh, numbering 1,729 out of the 2,270—the institu- tion being got up for their behalf mainly. The de- Posits have been made in sums varying Irom five thousand dollars down to one dollar. The sum in deposit on the Ist of January was $1,016,206 53, invested in bonds and mortgages. The average of each account is $233 33. The Gold Hill Mining Company is rapidly reco vering from the difficulties which at one time threatened to overwhelm it. The company have finally completed all of their mills, machinery, &c., and no obstacle seems now in the way for a resamp- tion of dividends at an early day. This company offers an exception to most of the present mining projects. Its managers have the greatest confidence in its resources, and believe that all the early state. ments made in relation to the richness of the mine, its productiveness, &c., will ultimately be realized. We hope all their anticipations will prove realities. A report has just been issued, from which we leara that the capital amounts to $579,960, and that there are in the treasury 24,003 shares which are not to be sold. At the date of the previous report, the out- standing indebtedness was $151,480 06, since which time it has been paid in tull. The receipts from all sources have been $211,683 78, and the disbursements $211,338 38—-cash balance January 1, 1356, $345 40. A large portion of the report is occupied by the presi- dent in explaining the cause of payment and suspen- sion of dividends. His explanations must be per” fectly satisfactory to the stockholders. It appears that the earnings of the mine were used in expendi- tures which properly should have come out of capi- tal, and a suspension of dividends was therefore in- evitable. The great error was in, continuing them solong. The report says :-— ‘The company have received from the products of the mine $173,014 42, and a balance of $3,474 16, derived from the sasessment over and above the $125,000 dens for the purchase ot the property, and toe amoun: received for the tale of such stock as has been disposed of, from which the stockholders bhava received in dividends $96,804 20, and have in the treasury $345 40, and $16 427 81 in goods, wood, quicksilver, pork, tallow &e., which has been psic for io cs!) snd «re all ‘required for mining purposes, and are to ve regarded as cash, and the balance bus been expended on the mine. ‘The gross earnings and expenditures of the Little Miami and Columbus and Xenia railroads during the year 1855, were as follows :— Lirmtz Mia and CoLvunus AND Xevta Rarrroaps. $501,531 70 480,822 52 34,826 88 $1,017, 180 10 506,546 31 , Net earniogs. $510,633 29 Of this two thirds, or $340,422 20, belongs to the Little Miami, after the deduction of 10 per cent divi- dends, which, in consequence of using earnings in the construction of a second track, were not paid in cash. The surplus is $258,963, a trifling increase on the previous year. The number of passengers car. Tied was 309,545, against 322,422 in 1854. The re port of the President says :— Notwithstandiog the untavorable circumstan:es at- tend'ng ail railroad interests during the early par: of the bee year, Our earnings for 1855 do not differ ma‘ cm those of the year previous. But if our income not inore.sed, ia some oxher respects our candition hss improved. The fioating debt has been reduced; we have borrowed but little money. and that little on short loans, repaid from the accruing receipts, and not adding (o tie responsibiities of the company. ‘The road has been ia- proved, and the property of the company increased in value.’ The double track, which is now in operation over nearly cne third of the length of our road, has added greatly to the cepacity for the transaction of ‘busi- nese, 66 well as to the safety and speed with which our trains may be run, and may therefore bs considered as a valuable investment tor the stockholders to the ful! amount of its cost. The Legislative Committee of the Georgia Legis- latare have reported the following resolutions rela- tive to the Atlanta Bank, of that State:— 1. That his Excellency, the Governor, be requested to issue his proclamation declaring the charter of aid bank forfeited, for a violation of its provisions, a4 contained in the fourteenth acction of said charter. 2 That the Solicitor General of the Coweta circuit he instructed and requiced to institute such legal procsedings sgsinst said bank as may be necessary and proper, for tee purpore of having the charter of said bank adjndged fortetted, and the privileges and franchises thereby granted,’ returned to the State. 3. That the Sohcitor General of the Cowata circuit be tustructed and required to iustitate prosecutions on tha criminal side of the Superior Court of Fulton county, ageinst George Smith, as Director, and 3.
