THE PATENT SAFE SWINDLE UNSUCCESSFUL. ‘Two very respectable looking men, named John Martin and Henry Ball, were taken into custody by officer Mul. ford, of the Nineteenth ward pclice, charged with having attempted to swindle an Englishman, named William Sales, out of $75, by means of the patent safe opera‘ The ecmplainant alleges that, mteat on going to Call fornia, he preseedod to the office of the Panama Steamshi Company for the purpose of buying a ticket, but not hay ing enough money to pay for one, ho was obliged to re- trace his ateps to his boarding houre; that soon after leaving the cflice of the Steamship Company he was met by Martin (who, bo supposed, was watching hita while he was endeavoring to purchase a ticket). The would-be triend asked Sales if he would not like to buy a ticxet, that he knew a man who had bovght one, but as he wan disappoicted in going to yCalfornia,’ would be glad to sell his ticket for half price. Mr. Sales at once snapped at the bait, and without any fuspicions whatever, agreed to accompany Martin to Sixty-second street, where it was understood the ticket could be bad at an extraordinarily cheap rate. On get ting out of the cars st this point, Mr. Hall and another gent mace their appearance, and, aa if the meating had been purely accidental, warmly greeted Mr. Martin, A © nyersation soon sprang upjbe'ween tho parties, and soon the little brasa instrument entitled ‘the patent safo,’? was Introduced, and various were the opinions ‘hat were entertained regarding the merits of the inven- tion. Halland Martin becams bnsily engcosred in a bet, and Mr. Sales, wha was quite a novice in such matters, was ensily drown into the snare, and willingly parted with $05, for which received as collateral seeurity a check for $500, drawn by Martin on some of ovr city banks. The following letter, c-vtatning the first announcement of his explorations, reached London yesterday afternoon:— Gopiavy, North Greenland, Sept. 12, 1855. Mv Drar Sm--I have only time to report to you the safe arrival of cur party at Goobayn, whence we have taken passage to England in the Danish brig. Mariane. ‘The explorations of our party embraced the entire shores of Smith's Sind, ante vow chasnal expanding from ita northeastern curve into an open Polar s9a. This great water course embraced an area of 3,000 square aciies, entirely freo from ice. It washed a bold andmoun- tainous coast, which has been charted as high at lat. 82 deg. 80 min. Fmith’s Sound termivates in an extonsive bay. which bears your name, and the coast of GreenJand, alter be- ir g followed until’it faced the North, waa found cement- cé tothe continent of America by a stupendous glacier vhich checked our further progress towards the Atlantios Throughout this long extent of new coast, the result of much hard travel and exposure, I have found no traces of the Jost party whore search instigated your own connec- tion wiih our expediticn, ‘The past two winters exceeded in soverity any that have before been recorded. Both seurvy and lockjaw embarrassed our efficiency, an’ our dogs, to the number of 7, perished of this latter scourge. Azone of 81 milos of roltd ice interpored bet ween us and the nearest water and to have remained » third winter would have pro fatal, On the 17th of May, witha carefully matured organize- tion of boats and sledges, I abandoned the brig and com- menoed our journey over the floes, We supplied our- selves with animal food entirely by our guni, and trans- edour sick in separate sledges. After a travel ot ,200 miles, and an exposure in open air of 84 days, we reaebed Upernavik in health and sutety. It ia right that while announcing our own restoration to the world, Ishould mention the death of tiroa of our party. These brave men perished in tho direct dis- charge of the duties of the rearch, and are entitled to the grateful recollections of their comrados and com- mander. Sin—It would seem to be premature in the absence of Or, Kone’acharts to eriticise his, letter to Mr. Peabody, published in your paper of this day, too severely; but wish to draw attention at once to the strange indongral- ties which it ccntain Ip one place Dr. Kane states that “there fs no open water above the mouth of Smith’s Sound (Pelham Point of Cope Inglefield),”? where, it will be remembered, Capt. ingleheld stated that he raw open water; and in another part of his letter he says: “The explorations of our party embraced the entire of Smith’s Sound, and a new chan- bel ex ding trom its northeastern carve into aa open Po'ar Sea.” Then, to mystify us still more, Dr. Kane adds:— “Smith's Sound terminates in an extreme bay, and the coast of Greenland, after being followed until it faced the north, was found cemented to the continent of Ame- rica by a stupendous giacter, whi: cheoked our further pregress toward the Atlantic.” A glance at a North Polar ebart containing Capt.
