6 NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 1856. FINANCIAL ANO COMERCIAL. BY @aRKEP?. Monvar, Feb, 4—$ P. M. ‘Tho stock market opened active and baoyant this Morning. All the leading stocks wore in demand, et better prices. The foreign news has been tho- roughly digested, and the public mind. appears to be pretty. well impressed with the belief that peace is highly prebabie ; that the negotiations will, sooner or later, load to the desired result. Tho aimple fact thas all parties have consented to negotiate, is quite conctgsive that terms have been privately proposed of amore favorable character than those previously disonieed. Peace is certainly desiratle, and it is cectainly not utterly impossible. It must come geome time, and we kuow of no period better than the present. All parties have had enoagh of war, aad all parties occupy positions enabling them to negetiate upon a better busts now than they ever will a ain should the present opnortunity pass and active hostilities be again renewed. The tone of private letters and circulars from the other side is decidedly more favorable than public accounts, and there is already a perceptibie improvement in confl- dence. There is a growing disposition to enter into new ongagements, All those fears which have heretofore been entertained previous to the arrival of Karopean steamers, have giveu way to a feeling of encouragement and faith. The steamers are now: looked for with confidence, aad with the belief taat fuvare advices will confirm those just received. At the first board to-day, illinots Gyatral Bonds advanced 1) per cent; Nicaragua Transit, }; Cum- berland, 3; New York Cvotral Rutiroad, j; Erie Railroad, 7; Hudson Kiver Railroad, J; Michigan Central Railroad, j; Michigan Southern Railroad, 14; Chicage and Rock Island, 1; Long Island, 1. Erle opened and closed at 55; per ceat, and there were a good many purchases fur cash. Michigan Seathera is moving up s eadijy, gradually, and therefore permanently. ‘there has Lately been some farge purchases of this stock for out- aiders, No speculative excitement has been created, and it has been ‘hroaghout shrewily managed. This road will, by the opening of its own direct through line, and its con.ections with Detroit, receive a greater accession te iw general business than in any previous year in its history, The com- pletion of the Goshen line is like the opening of a distinct road, of a more favoranie character in every partioalar. It net only opens a rich and popalous section ef country, but as a shrough route, it will be invaluable to the Michigan Southern Railroad Vom- pany. The Goeheu line is, in fact, the main trunk of the company’s road. Although nearly finished, it haa not yet been of any service. Until the con- nection’ is made, the through travel cannot make it available. it is progressing rapidly, and will be opened im time t add immensely to the gross earnings of the company this year. Galena and Chicago is not in the market in any quantity. A few shares are sold from day to day, but it would be difficult to pick up a few hundred shares. A demand for five hundred shares would carry the stock up three per cent. Nicaragua ‘Transit is about the firmest and most promising atook on the list. There way a large bear sale this morning at 224, seller four months. The sales to-day figure ap' about four thousand shares, closing ateady at the opening price. It is ocr impression that a strong upward movement will soon appear in this femoy. \It‘has for ita basis the position of a large capitalist. ~The stock aficat is not plenty, and the huver’s option under contract, have reached @ point that maktew charts parcioularly circumspect in their operations. The recent sm i. tHndson River bas mo real basis. The agitation of the bridge ques- ‘iow im the Legislature is the primcipal cause of the inflation. ‘The following case, which recenfly appeared in the Supreme Court, is of interest to those engaged in negotiating railroad bonds. It appears that the defendant received these bonds for the purpose of negotiating a loan, but actually apphed them to private uses. The greatest pablicity should be given 0 auch affairs, and all busineas men should be tho ig Aeauart up in reference to them :— jo Count——Prciat TERM. The increase in loans is not at all large, wheu we consider the increase in banking capital. At this season we must look for an expansion of loans, and 8 comparison with previous prices cannot be properly understood without a comparison of the amount of banking capital at corresponding dates.
