‘Tragedy. The Oberokec Chiefs. Tax Heawiraer.—We notice Tee se, ap oman ee The Wosk of the New York Legisiature. out elaborate discussion. The Prohibivory law takes 4 prominent pomtion, A bill is in the hands of a select committee of the House, which proposes to repeal the law of last ncesion, which has been so universally disre- garded. Of course Mr. Speaker Robinson selected that committee promiscuously from the House, without any Particular knowledge of the preferences of any member, except perbape the chairman, Mr. Glover. Upon inquiry, it appears that 2 majority of the committee—namely, Messrs. Glover, Taylor and Matteson—are in favor of un- conditional repeal, whilat Messrs. Dudley and Green etand committed for the law. The majority are engaged in preparing © report embodying all the reasons which have been given by fee’d lawyers during the last six months sguinst the constitutionality of the Prohibitory law. It is very much coubted whether a majority of the House are in favor of ite reyeai; it is certain that the Senate will not yield; and if, perchance, a repeal bill should pass both houses, it will receive a prompt veto in the executive chamber. In the meanvime the sincere riends of temperance are proporing amendments to the present law, but will make no movement uatil the case shall come out vt the Court of Apoeuls, Another effort is being m-de to compel railroads to pay canal tole on freight. ‘The bill intzoduced in the House includes omiy the Cenirs}, end syracuse and Oswego roads. The Canal Committee having the bill in charge will incorporate an anendment. iucladiog the Erie and Ogdensburg yoads. Tho former cowpetes with tue canal ‘very materially, aod dive:ts # million @ year trom the treasury of the State. The lat er dies not interfere in & ‘very considerabie degr:¢, but na a matter of principle and justice should be incluces ix tne iaw. It is gonerally ac- edged that the rafiroeds sbould pay tolls until the enlargement shall become compleie, and condemn the ‘action of that Legislatme wtisn ook off the tolis; but to Testore thrm again is qui'e « difleseat aed more difficalt matter. Tne & bocy of the people in the State are proprietors of the canals, acd the Lag viature is presumed to be the choren guardian of she whole peopls’s interest. The railrcads are private corporations, with vitality them by the Legislature, avd under the contro! of and managers of wore ability, tact, enterprise and ent than i3 ever found either in execu- live, legislative or clerical d-partments of the State go- vernment. The greatet minds are employed upon the management of our railroads, Toe tolis will not be im- ag however desirous the friends of the canals may . have deen defea'e: in every attempt. The quertion is ove in whish the great west is greatly interested. Forts have heretofore been made to Comnect the western rosds with the southern and eastera, the construction of a bridge over the Hudson , but bave proved iallures.
