Qur Buston Correspondence. Boston, Jan. 26, 2858, Qu for American Conventions—Prospet of 4 Democratic and Whig Union im Massachuselts—Committaes on Liquor and Liberty—Pauper Statistics—Lunatic Sialistics—Cost of Koonomy—Trial of the Shatomut Avenwe Criminals— ‘Phe Weather—New Hampshire, dc. ‘The \call for the meeting of American conventious te elect delegates to the Philadelphia Convention of the Metional American party does not excite so much taik as I supposed it would. The impression is common that the future of Massachusetts does not depend so much upon ‘what the dominant party may do ss upon the willingness ef the whigs to unite with the democrats, forgetting “ mi- nor differences” in an sffeetionate regard for good offices. ‘She example of Maine has not been lost on our political people in Massachusetts, and there really was no cause fer » union there that does not exist here. Then there will be a United Sttacs Senator to elect at the next session of the Legislature, and patriotism will require a union of all the hunkery to see which of their umber shall have bie place, There is netbing out of the way inthe opinion ef those persons who insist that the next government ef our State will! be thoroughly hunkerish, as ® consequence cf the formation of « new party, a la mode de Maine. We nave adopted mere than one Msine idea ot Inte years, and there isa prospect that we shal: continue im the same line ot bus ness. The Maine democrats have done admiraply, hav- img greased the whigs, preparatory to swallowing them; and our wnigs are just as fond of grease, and just as ready to be swal.owed, as their Maine brethren. Bu- ebanan’s nomination would beg the whoie lot of them, from Choare and Hillard and Walley, down to Peter Barvey. The Pennsyivanian is a gentieman, and the whigs, snowing bis fondness for Irishmen, and his admi- vation for all canonized characters, are confident that, Mke St. Patriek, he ‘would behave as sich.’’ Were Joho Davie living he would “forbid the bans;’”’ put he is no mere, and nis quarrel with Buchanan would not pe al- Jewed to have weight with the surviving members of tne Jate (ond slow) woig party of Massachusetts. Suchanan ‘wee an 01d federalist, an old provectionist, an old bank map, and an old friend of Mr. Webster; and what more coudd the woigs ask? They would come up to his sup- port, and in return would receive the senatorship that Quarks Sumner now holds, haif a dozen Congres- sional representatives, perhaps the Governorship, and rots of the lesser spoils, The Know Nothings wound be glad to have the aia of the whigs; but ‘the latter prefer tne alliancs of the democrats a» being the less radical party of the two. Some of the whigs were anxious for this fusion as long ago as last Ostober, but the rest fought shy of it, und preferred waiting to see what amount of eapital each party could contribute to the proposed new firm, which is to be en- dewed with bP saison to trade in all kinds of offices, the election of November showed that a union of the supporters of Beach and Walley would have done wall, those gentlemen received 49,000 votes, and at least 6,000 Whigs voted for Governor Gardner to ‘prevent Mr. Rock- well’ election, all of whom would have supported Mr. Beach if he had bad apy chaace of being chosen, and wach chance he would have had if the Walley whigs had supported him. There could, I should say, be fifty thousand votes—probably more—obtaine! for’a hunker fusion candidate, and that with perfect ease, if the Prem- dential candidate of the democrats should be satisfactory tw the aristocratical whigs. These are the gentlemen who gave the vote of Boston for Pierce in 1852, and they have power enough to secure that of Massachusetts for a respectable democratic statesman in 1866. Against such a fusion nothing but a thorough union of the republicans and the Know Nothiogs could prevail; and such a union ia about as likely to happen asa confluence of tne iwaters of the Sacramento and the Danube. Those two parties hate each other too heartily to anite, and the present course of the Know Nozbings is not at all ealculated to increase the prospect of a union being sf- feeted. It is possible that the K.N. candidate for the Presidency may be so scceptable to the whiga as to ren- der them averse to a union with the democrats; but that yw very much to be doubled, judging from the present state of things. The Legislative committees on the Personal Liberty Jaw and on the Maine Inw heve been appointed. They are raid to contain majorities against bota measures; but some of the members are so utterly obscure and ins'gai- figant that the opinions of half of them ace as little known as they would be of consequence but for the posi- tions of their holders. The men who appointed then were free soilers, or supperters of both laws, ‘The Legisiature has been engaged this weck in disouss- ing economy at a cost of about $1,200 per day. Amount saved to the State by the discussixc—000,000,000—and as many more as the compositor may see fit, in nis gene- rosity, to add. ‘The annual report of the number of paupers in Massa- ehasetts, their origin, and so forth, coming down to No- ‘vember 1, 1855, has been published. The total number of persons who were supported or relievedas paupers was 18,227. @f this number 8,154 had a legal settlement here, and 7,742 were State paupers. The foreigners among the State paupers numbered 6.287, of whom 3,304 were in Suffolk county. The Suffolk peapes were 6,294, bei almost four times as many as in Middlesex county, wh! hss ihe larger population. There were relieved in the slmshouse 6,220 persons; aided and ej ery out of there institutions, 11,756. ’ The number of insane persons relieved or supported was 582; of idiots, 289; of psupers by reaxon of idiocy or insanity, 753; ot t " wnder 14 yeare, 1,330. It ix stated that the number of paupers by season of intemperance, in themselves or others, was 11,377. Perhaps this number is not over- stated; but it is a fact that the temperance people put such leading questions to criminals and paupers that they alwayn bave capital opportunities to lay all their vices and suderings on the strong tack ot rum. The gentlenea in the State prison always impress it upon the committee of visiters that ‘‘rum did it.” They are like the unfortu- nate man whose wooden legs would split or rot in conse- quence of his partiality for gin and water hot. More than Gone man bas escaped the consequences of his crimes by becoming the “awful example” of a temperance oom- mittee. The whole cost of supporting snd relieving paupers, in- cluding interest and capital invested in almshouses, ‘was $497,601 01. In Snifolk county the amount was $112,- 5 Te estimated vaiue of the almshor $1,127,258 43, ‘Tere were in the Boston Lunatic Hospital, on the let of December, 1864, female patients, 149; male patients, 187. During the year immediately following 50 females and 41 males were admitted into the iastitution—mukin, & total of 353. Of these, 28 recovered, 7 were improved iu health, and 38 died. The weeiher has been of the ‘‘screaming” character since Thursosy night. Yesterday was the hardest, though not tie coldest, day we have bad this winter. It was enough to break down a strong man, and to kill » week one, 10 be exposed to the terrible wicd that blew, and which was as villanously searching asif it had blown ‘ever a thoussnd miles of Russian steppes. It was petter, bowever, thon another snow storm, and between the two we should have had to choose, had we had any choice in the matter. The streets are getting into tolerable condition. The Dlocks of snow that are cut out are nearly two feet thick, and stili a great deal of snow is left loose on the ground. It is principally deposited on the Common. If we should have no more’ saow for a week, thiags will have become quite comfortable. There is no prospect of a ‘January thaw,” as yet. It will probably be a February swash. The trial of Coburn and Dalton excites hardly any atten- ‘tion. No new evidence has been adduced by government. It is supposed that when the evidence tor the defence shall have been commenced there will be some interest maptiested in the trial. The general opinion is that the Verdict, if againat the accused at all, will be very light, It_is not true, as has been stated, that Mr. Choate, Mr. Hillard and Mr. Everett are electioneering in New Hampshire for thedemocrata. They may do so by and by, but they are not doing so now. ‘The ‘ United Sons of America’’ held a State Eacamp- ment on Thursday evening, in this city, at Patriovic Hall. J. G.
