FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONEY MARKET. Femay, Jan. 4—6 P. M. ‘There wasa little mere activity in the stock market this mcening, but the sales were generally at lower peices. At the first board New Yor Central 6’s declined 34 per cent; Delaware ard Hudson, \; New York Central Railroad, 4; Erie, Reasing, 34; Michigan Southern, 44; Cleveland and Toledo, \; Chicego and Roek Island, 3; Hudson River Rsilroad, 4; Michigan Ceatral, *- Nicaragua Tramrit advanced 1 per cent. We notice « more active business than usval in the different c’asses Of railroad bonds, generally at lower prices, The move- ment im Nicaragua this morning was unexpectedly active, Yesterday morning thers was more disposition to realize, end considerable stock was put off sta slight desitne. ‘The fact that the most prominent parties in the upward movement were sellers, and had st the close of the day previous realized on about 4x thousand shares, created en impression that the proper time had arrived for se- curing profite where they could be made. Nearly two thousand sbares were sold at the first board, prin- ctpally for cash, under that impression. At the pecond board mearly the same quantity was sold at about the same prices, snd the market clorei steady. Apprebansions of holders regardicg the culmination o the combinaticn gracuslly disappeared, and speculators for @ fall camo in this morning anxious purchasers for de livery. The market for all other stock was without the first sustaining influence. Toere were plenty of sellers of every stock om the list, and it appears to be the prevail- ing impresaion that lower prices wil rule before the ex- pirstion of this month. Money is in active demand, but the security is confined principa'ly to Wail street. Large amcunts have been called in and distributed in dividends, Those who bave been compelled to pay up, are short and hard up, while the payments, having been in compara- tively small sums, have not partisularly relieved any one, Af-er es time, most of this money will get back into the steeet egain, when times will be easier, but we must not look for much relie‘, We have no idea that there will be within the next ninety days a plethora im the money mariet, oreven what can be called moderately comfortable times in money matters. In July, Ay 000 were held by 114 persors. in October, 50,086, by 176 persons, and on the v6ta of December, S0468'are inthe hands of 246 persons, of which but 8,581 were inthe hands of the bears in trus’, tor their outeice friends. From this fact, as the report at each ot the periods nsmed show no variation, it is clear that the stock in the hands of speculators is not equal to a singie week's sales.
