NEW YORK HERALD, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 238, Fortunately, the veteran “great elm,’’ which has so oadsed wlaters,'waa but sligudy ‘iafareda few anal ut was but s! is afew 4 a its havi ct well braced t he #0 toe! with irom bands within the’ lest fow years, Dayoud the ploy. gather up scattered wood, but desisted for a time from fear of injury; and during the entire forenoom it was at times to cross the paths, as the strong west- 4 wind <n the large icicles en lle to) direction, elms on Tremont street, neur street church, also suffered feom the same cause. In the yard of she residence of Mra. Rollins, Beacon street, o large limb of a highly valued elm was brokea down, falling into the yard of the house of Mr. Jamoa R. In the King’s chapel burying ground a large willow, of great age, was completely split down and ruined. May ofthe willows in the Sout burying ground wace bacly ‘On Harrison avenne, a very large tree at the corner of Oak street was broken down; also ® number of small One large elm in Sumner stroot, near the arch, and the main limb of another near the Church Green, were broken down. (On Dorchester avenue, the willows at the side of the way were go bent down this morning by their accumulated weight as to make it a matter of difficulty for a carriage to pass. ‘The telegraph is also a great suiJerer dy the acsumula- tion of ice upon the wires, which bas caused it to break down in every direction. Communication with New York is entirely cut off. One wire going out of the aty ig broken ip no Jess than one hundred and sixty places, In Cambridge, ax we learu, many trees suffered the loss vof branches from the accumulation of and probably ‘the damage in this way has been ex! vein ali the country towns in this vicinity. From the Harttord Times, Dec, 26.] The weight of the ice has proved destructive to thou- sands of valuable trees. Herdiy ove of the hundreds of elms in Hartford has @scaped without the loss of one or more branches, while in maoy cases they split dowa in the middfe, throwing buge limabe that looked themse:ves like trees across the walks and the streets, Hundreds of valuab) de trees are almost ruined, their symmetrical proportions sadly married by the loss of their most im- portant limbs. In some caves trees were torn up by the roots. All through the litter part of the might the sounds of the destructive work going on could be heard —now acreaking, groauing noise like the cracking of forest trees that sometimes oxeurs fn high latitudes whea thére is an intense feost—ani ngala a thundertag crash would reverberate through the street, telling of the de- scent of some big hmb rudely torn from iis place. The wreck and ruia extended through every strest, and tue workmen are busy to-day with axes and saws removing the wood, At haif-past 10 o’clock (he sun came out, and lighted up the trees, far and near wiih a dazzling brillidney and a cold, clear beauty that is seldom witnessed on such oczasions. The cnating of iva is unprecedenedly thick and heavy, and the effect to the eye was vorvespondingly fine, Ttwas a scene of still, cold and pare beau'y—a view of *‘atill tite,?” where ail was frozen and woidvnlivs, bat transcendently besutiful, Occasisnally the flind woul arise, and then the trees would rattle and the branches tumble—seattering icy gems around, that flashed with all the rainbow hues of the prism. ‘The damage to fruit troes is somewhat serious, Many rdens have received an injury ia the breaking dowa of imbs and whole trees, that it will be difficult to make odd. Sethe elm and willow trees suffor most, In Main, Col- lege, Washington, Church and numerous other streets, thee beautitul trees are badly injured for ornamental purpores, The wind of to-day, which blew pretty stillly from the northwest @ ter 11 o'clock, bas not helped mat ters much. Theatres and Exhibitions. Miss ANNA SPINOLA IN BROOKLYN.—Miss Anna Spinola treated the inhabitants of the City of Churches to a ae- cond grand vocal and instrumental concert on Wednes- day evening. Considering the co\d wintry win3, piersing and sharp enough to cut the noses and ears of untortu- nate pedestrisns, the young American prima donna was greeted by a reasonably large audience, who made up in enthusiasm what they lacked in numbers. It must have been some consolation to the fair cantatrice to perceive that her hearers consisted of the ‘upper tendom,” and were capable of appreciating the grand compositions by Rossini, Pellini, Verdi and Wallace, which wore tho selec- tions of the evening. Mus S. has a beautiful and highly cultivated soprano voice of the first order, with which she can execute the most difficult passages of the Italian or other composers. Besides a charming melodiousness and exquisite taste, she possesses great power and vigor, sufficiently so to fill a room twice the capacity of the Brocklyn Athenwum, in which her concert was given. Her audionce last night showed a high apprecia- tion of her yooal abilities by the prolonged and enthusins tic plaudits which foilowid each piece she sung. She was frequently encored. Rodes’ celebrated air with va- riations, and a favorite aria frem “ Puritani’” were ren- dered by her in a truly artistic manner. Mrs. Jameson, Mr. Aptommas and Mr. Karl Wels assisted Mis: and met with their share of deserved %pplaw whole, the concert was a triamph for Miss Spinola, and it is not often that the Brooblynites are favored with betie: or even as good ones. Indeed, amusements of any description in our neighboring city are “like angel’s visits, few and fac between.’’ Its inhabitants should, therelore, be the more eager to avail themselves of the rare opportunities which are presented to them of lis: tening to good music well executed by first class artists, without the trouble of crossing over the water, Miss Spinola will be sure eventually to meot with a brilliant suctess by a little perseverance. Broapway Tuxatre.—The grand comic fairy extrava wnra called “hing Charming” will agaix be ‘performed this evening; indeed so unpresecen'ed has been its suc- ores, that the mavager hax announced it for repetition every vight next week. Previous to the spectacle, a popular farce will be acted, Niur0’s.—The beautifal pantomimic ballet of ‘Joviter? will be performed, for toe second time, this evening; the leading characters by the famous Ravels and the charm- ing danseuse, M’lle Robert. The afterpiece is dina,’ which abounds in those wonderful tricks, transierma- tions, &c., for which the Ravels are celebrated. Bowery TakaTRe.—The new local drama entitled “The Chip Boy of the Dry Dock,”? together with the extra- ordinary achievements of Messrs. Myers & Nixon's eques- trian troupe, fill this house to overtiowing every evening. ‘Those who appreciate remark: ble feats of posturing and gymrastica should not fail to cee Mr. Nixon and his pupils. Beeron’s Tearne.—Three excellent comic pieses, ia two of which the manager appears, are offered at this establishment this evenlag. The performances commence with the farce called Only a Penny,” whicn will be fol- Jowed by the laughable farce of ‘Tue Duteh Governor.’ ‘The never-tiring ‘“Toodies’’ cloves the entertainments, Warsack’s TieaTre.—An abundance of pleasara is still the order of the dsy st this house. MONEY MARKET. ‘Tuvespay, Des. 27—6 P. M. opinion that four per cent in cash and two per cont in stock will be the payment. This will of course leave a surplus of egrnings for future contingen- cies. It must be borme in mind that the floating debt is large, and must be provided for. It would not be the wisest policy to pay large cash dividends while the floating liabilities remsined at such a bigh figure, and we have so much confidence in the judgment of the mansgera of this road that we feel confident they will look hereafter to a fixed rate for semi-annual cash divi- dends, without an effort to stretch it to the utmost and leave the treasury empty. With the four per cent paid in carb in August last, and with four per cent in oaeh in January, and an extra dividend of say two per cent in stock at the same time, it appears to us sufficient, ia view of the large reservation for emergencies. Our rail- road companies must hereafter look more to the reserva: tion or renewal fund. No company is safe without live- ral appropriations for that purpose; and regular ssmi- ennual cash dividends of moderate amount, with proper reservations for renewal, sinking fund, &c., will do more to raise both the actual and the market value of railroad stocks, than all tbe extravagant but irregular rates those concerns ever declared. Holders of stock want something they can depend upon—sometning permanent—something fixed, with an occasional extra dividend—if they are for- tunate enough to have investments in companies which can accumulate a surplus for that purpose. The rencibility on the subject of the Reading Railroad, toan “oniside barbarian’ is an enigma thst cannot be explained—nor is it safe, in the present condition of its cotemporartes, to ask even tbe knowing ones—the parties whose eyes are open to the tricks of the trade—to look at its condition or contemplate for a moment its extraordi- vary business or prospects, Being all in the same boat— all “freighted to the gannel’’ with a worthless cargo— and all laboring to save themselves with evea the amall- eat portion of their treasure—it would be death to recog. nise, or permit otbers to recognise, anything in » better condition, To say that the coal tonnage on the Reading was this year 2,212,783 tons—that its freignt and passen- ger business was nearly up to ita expenses—that the terest on its indebtedness is but $465,846, and that its in- come after paying every liability of the company, is over 203¢ per cent on its stock; and to ask “their filends” to believe il, under the circumstances, would be asking the sinkicg man to abandon his oar to the more expert swimmer, or tho motker to give up ber sickly child for the healthy and robust offspring of her neighbor. Our own and truly legitimate offspring are, therefore, the darling objects of our care; and, as Mrs, Macbeth says, “‘we love the child that milks us,’ we must stick to our Erios, our New York Centrals, our Michigan Central, our Michigan Southern, and our several roads, “for the trade of Al- bany,’’ where no trace can be had for even the expenses. Hence the fears that the expected dividend on the Read- ing may be one-eighth of one per cent below what its friends are looking for. But, as nineteon-twentieths of the stock of the Reading is now in the hands of parties who have looked into its condi!ion—who have used their own eyes and their own judgment in relation to its ad. vantages, and who hold for investment, and are satis- fied with ita prospects in the future—the sensibilities of ovr Wall street friends have but little effect on their nervous system. They know its enormous bu- siness, and ita ability to maintain it, They know that its descending grades enable it to defy com- petition, amd that its cost and final adaptation to the business enable it to meet the expenses that would otherwise destroy its advantages. They know, also, that of the entire stock of the company but 60,458 shares are held in New York; that in October last 50,996 shares were in the bands of 176 persons, and that now 208 persons hold from one to four hundred sbAres, amount- ing to 26,666, Of the balance, about 11,178 shares are in the hands of brokers, in trust for their outside friends; 6,024 in the banda of five individuals, who purchased previous to March last; and the remainder, amounting to 6,600 shares only, in the hands of the bears. This distribution of the stock in this city is, therefore, the reason for the various ‘dividend rumors,” and the why the stock is not at par. The deliveries for January ox- ceed one half more than the whole amount, and the sales per cay exceed the amount actually in market, There- fore, knowing these facts, and knowing the prospect of a dividend off the entire floating debt during 1857, with an extraordinary dividend in cash from the business of the road during 1856, it is-not likely the holders will give up the stock to supply the sales made upon the credit of the parties, The:e are some other stocks on the market the value of which is fixed beyond s Coubt, but the great majority of securities on the list are at this moment ioflated far beyond their real value, ‘The margin for depreciation must beremoved before outside speculators will be at- tracted, It cannot be expected that new purchasers will take hold st anything like current rates. We look for a decline of some importance within the next sixty days, Michigan Central, Michigan Southern, New York Central, Hudson River, Cumber and Coa}, all must recede and set- tle down to something like their actual value, before a speculative movement can beexpected. very one of the stocks named ts enormously inflated. The threo first named railroad stocks manage to pay at present pretty respectable dividends, but there is no guaranty tor the future, no reservation for those contingencies which, with all roads of large capitals, are at eny moment likely tooccur. They are not productive to the extent repre ented beyond the moment. Any day serious disasters may occur that would sweep away the entire year’s net earnings, and in the absence of a reservation fund, divi dends would have to give way, and the stockholders be compelled to patiently wait the retura of better times, ‘The construction account of each of these companies is ly, and it is ntterly out of the question to arrest it without an immediate suspension of divi- increasing rapi dends. At the second board the market was comparatively quiet. Frie recovered most of the decline in the morning and closed firm. There was no change in Reading. Ni- catugua Transit fs working slowly but stendily upward. The purchasers ore among the most rolid men in the street, and the shorts must look sharp to their sources of sup;ly. The buyer sixty operations may prove fa- tal to some of the bears. The resignation of the Presi dent is contradicted. Ail we haye to say is, that if he has not resigned he ought to. It he has rendered any service for the lorge ralsry received, we have iscover it, We believe him to be a honorable, respectable man; but the Nica- Company want none bat active, practical men in the severa) departments of its af- ministration, and ts stockholders are waiting patiens- ‘an- decbiit, Mr, White, or come other active thorough-gotng man for the Presidency, or abolish the office altogether, re in favor of doing awey with the office and appropriating the yment of two first rate accountanta, whose duty it shall be to furnish the stockholders semi- annually with clear, comprehensive and correct reporta of the company’s progress and position. The report of the resignation of the Pregident may be premature, bat it is on that account ack the less desirable, Michigan Southern clowed heavy ot % per cent, and was afterwards a fraction lower. The bare ¢ FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. | tividend of tive per cont in cash and ve por cont in stock, payable in January. ‘he five per cent in stook represents the amount of sinking fund invested in the company’s bonds. The investment of a sinking fund in ‘the bonds of the company purchasing is the only logiti- mate way of appropriating such afand. It is like » man baying up his own paper, and it ‘is perfectly proper for an individual or = company to purchase their own pa- per at the market price. The investment is, at all events, s safe one, amd we should like to see it practised to a greater extent in this com- munity. This Milwaukie ana Mississippi Railroad, by the way, 8 one of the kind we are in favor of and freely en- dorse, Thatis saying a great deal in these days of doubt and distrust. It is @ second Galena and Chicago, and now is the time to take hold of it. By and by, when it gets up to 124 a 126 per cent, it will be too late, for most of the margin will be used up. It is a cheaply construct- ed, well managed, and even now, in its uncompleted state, » highly productive road. We like the financial system in operation, and the character of tho men in the mansgemont is a good guaranty that it will be rigidly adhered to, When it is abandoned, the public may de- pend upon being posted up as to the why and where- fore. The Little Miami Railroad Company have declared » dividend of five per cent on the capital stock (and pro rata for any stock not entitled to full dividend) out of the earpings up to the 30th of November last inclusive, paya- ble at par in the six per cent one thousand dollar mort- gege bonds of the company, heretofore issued, dated May 2, 1868, bearing interest from Nov. 2, 1855. On or after the 2th of January next, certificates payable in such bonds will be issued to the respective stockholders for their dividends, in sums to suit their convenience, and the bonds, as well as the certificates, will be ready for de- livery at the respective placea where the stock is re- The stock market is gradually settling down into winter quarters, There was comparatively a small business transacted at the first board, and lower prices ruled. Delaware and Hudson declined per cent; Michigan Cen- tral Railroad, 3¢, Reading Railroad, 3; Michigam South- ern Railroad, ; Panama Railroad, 3; Galena aud Chi- cago, 3g. New York Central does not vary much from 92 percent, The dafly sales are small, and the brokers ap- pear to have very little disposition to touch it. Hudson River Railroad is in about the same position, Speculation {a dead in both ef them. Reading Railroad was heavy at the opening to-day, and closed weak, at lower prices. The bears are making all sorts of a handle of the dividend payable in January, There were rumors to-day in the street that it would be four per cent in cash and two per cent in stock, and we are disposed to believe that this is nearer the mark than any previous statement.
