NEWS FROM WASHINGTON. OUR SPECIAL DESPATCHES. CAUCUS OF THE DEMOOKRATS—SPIRITED DEBATE— PROGRAMME OF ACTION—-NO COMPROMISE OR SUS- RENDER. Wasimxaton, Dec. 28, 1855. At the adjournment of the House, this afternoon, a caucus of the democratic members was called to meet in the Representativer’ Hall, at eight o'clock this evening. Prompuy at the hour about fifty members were in at- tendance, and the meeting continued till » quarter pas eleven. Mr. Jones, of Tennessee, presided. A great numbsr o wpeeches were made. Among thore who participated in the discussion were—Meaars. Bowie and Stewart, of Mary- land; Cobb, Stephens and Crawford, of Georgia; Cadwal lader, of Pennsylvania; and Quitman and Barksdale, of Missised ppt. ‘The talk was very animated, but seemed all to tend i the anme direction—to the practical result. The pro- Ject of uni-ing with the Fuller men was considered; but the simple fact that such a union would not constitute a majority, was considered conclusive against it, without welghing the other objections. Mr, Stephens, of Georgia, earnestly afvocated a con- tinual session of the House until « Speaker should be chosen. This subject came up too late to be fairly con- sidered. Finally, it was unanimously resolved to stand by Col, Richardson and the platform to the bitter end, ‘and to recommend to democratic members to avoid do- bate as fur as possible, and to offer no propositions or reeolutions in the House, but just keep on steadily voting. It was then agreed that if five members should think farther consideration desirable at any time, on their re- quest, the Chairman should call another caucus. B. TUK DEBATE IN CAUCUS—DECISION OF THE MEET- ING—BANKS WITHIN ONE VOTE OP AN ELECTION. Wasixoton, Deo. 28, 1855. A democratic cnucus was holdin the hall of the House this evening. Mr. Taylor of Loulsiana, opened the pail. He took no distinct ground, Col. Richardson then with- drew his name as « candidate for Speaker, but it was not accepted by the caucus, Mr, Cobb of Georgia, followed, and took cecided ‘ground in favor of continuing bal- loting until a Speaker was chosen. Stephens ot Geor- gta, also took the ame ground. Shorter of Alabam, fa- vored faking » yew man, and urged them to support Ful- ler, Cadwallacer of Pennsylvania, was opposed to all fusion, Ore of South Carolina, was for stand. ing by their nominee and platform, and not turrendering cne icta, Quitman, of Mississippi, offered «resolution that they continue balloting watil Wednes day, and if no Speaker be elected, then adopt the plurall- ty rule. This was lost by two votes. Afier considerable discussion, the following reaslation Wes unanimously adopted:-— Resolved, That we will adhere to our platform and no- minee, and that we recommend that no dom veracic mom- ber cifer any proposttion with reference to Speaker. with out previous consaltation in caucus, and that the Chair- man be requested to call tnem together, After this they adjourned. Ranks’ friends expect to eleot him to-morrow. I was informed a few moments ago that he lacked but one vote to-day. There were two men who promised to go for him provided the other vote could be obtained. Dv. PROPOSED COALITION OF THR DEMOORATA AND KNOW NOTHINGS—A COMPROMISY REPUDIATED? Some were for and many against any compromise, Mr. Shorter, of Alabama, urged a e»m- promise with the National Americans. He would merge party in country, and organize on any national conser- vative baria, Hon, Howell Cobb, of Georgia, made the Priveipel speech cf the evening, urging that avy com piomire would ignore their principles. “Are you,’” ho said, “to go before your constituents and acknowledge you trailed in the dark the banner they placed in your bands? My counsel is to stand firmly by your principles and your candidate.” The caucus adjourned without any result, General Sam Houston left home on the 20th Inst. for Washington, and is expected here by the 5th of January. k THIRTY-FOURTH CONGRESS, ¥MAST SESSION. THE #PRAKERSUP, Mr. Sewanp, (dem.) of Gn., offered a resolution choosing Mr. Richardson Speaker of the House, as under the pro- sent differences of opinion. no organization can be effest- ed, without uniting all who agree on the dostrine of non-intervention as asserted by the Kansas-Nebraska act, and proposing that all differences on other mbjecta be postponed, without compromise or conceufon on the part of members voting for the resolu'fon. The closing of the old year seems to have been seized upon by certain members as mort appropriate time for cloving accounts with thelr consciences; and hence they have been upon the floor to day making clean treaste of {t. Mr. Millward, of Pennsylyonia, led off by making an exposure of the manner in which an attempt had been wade by Mr. Pearoe, one of bis colleagves, to bribe him to cast his vote tor Mr. Banka. The richest part of thia exporure was the attempt to perpetrate « frawl oa Mr. Millward, at the very moment of bribing him. For hin vote for Mr. Banks, Mr. Millward was to be rmwle the chairman ot & committee which really had no existence; but the honorable member was out to be so cusily entrapped.
