Pa 6 FIXANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. MONBY MAGEET. Sunpay, ec. 2—6P, M. At the close of the stock market yesterday a very dull, ie jy eased feel ny prevailed. There was a pretty general Girpesition to ce |, but there were n> buyers. Erie and Reading appear to be the principal stocks operated tn, gud both show a strong downward tendency, The latter is withie thirty dsys of a teu per cent dividend, and is selling at 12 @ 13 percent ciscount, This is equal to about oT per cené for @ stock Wich bas earned net, during the isst fiscal year, twenty per cent on its capital. When we see such things a6 these, and then look at the curront quotations for other railroad stocks, 1t appears to us that Wall +treet is the best market fur" poor stocks; that the Sess real value a securt y posse-sea the moreit will bring. Now York Central is now relifog for about two per cent above Reading. The former earns barely six pec ceat oa ite capital, while the lutrer earns twenty. Tne former is in « ‘afr way of being ruiued by competition, while the latter bas a perfect monopoly of its business. Erie is not a bit wore off to-dey than the Cen:ral. We aro tis- posed to think that, of the two cowpauies, five yesrs hence Erie will be the best, and selling Or the most. The Erie company saves its dividends. If it does not earn any, it peys nono, and so itis not ronning up its capital in that way. The New York Central is adding to its capital every year by its divitends, and thereby loses what the Erie saves. A few years ago, when Erie was selling at 90 a 96 per cent, we werealone in the opposi- tion. It was as diMeuit to make any one believe then that it was not wor:h half what it wae selling at, or that ita dividends were rot carned, as itis now to make peo- ple believe that New York Central ia not worth over 70 per cent, or that it does not earn five per ceat on its present capital. A year or two hence we shall reseive as much credit for our exposé of New York Central as we ave for our exposé of Erie. ‘The European news received yesterday spread conster- naticl smong holders of fancy stocks, With ull the notes of warning tha: have been sounded in their eara, the bulls have been canght with lows of fancies at high prices. It is most astoniching that men will be so bilad to their real interest as to carry in these times such stacks of famcy atocks, that they will load themselves dowa with such trash, when the mutterings of the approaching storm are so distin:tly heard in the distance— when even the blackness of the rising cl ud can be distinctly seen. There is no safety in those times ‘Dut in a complete withirawal from active operations, We wovld arrest, if possible, every species of speculation, end g0 far as fancy stocks go, the fewer a man has the better, atany time. The u’most caution should be prac. ticed while the Old World is couvalsed with wars, the expenses of which are upon a scale never before realized. ‘Tt fa dhe height of folly for a man to inunch out into any speculation beyond his cagital, when public credit is likely to be so overstrained and private credit so restriot- ed. Contraction should be the order of the day, while it cam be done without violence or derangement. If left too long, it will be foreed upon the commuuity, and then De attended vith disasters, The ne vs by the Atlantic is ndt, Of iteelf, so bad as generally ant‘cipated, but the so- counts foreshadow sumething which has dled the pnblic mind with all sorts of apprehensiony, [here are strong indicatiens in the financial horizon of the Ul World, of the appreach of ancther revulsion or convulsion, of greater severity and longer duration than the last. It must come as ;ure as the rising of the san, if hostiliries are not immediately suspevded and the war expenditures at once cease, As tre latter is utte-iy out of the ques- tion, we must prepare ourselvea for the former. The exporta of epecie from this port last week, amount- d to $24,076, making, for the year, $26,538 205. The Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Company will pay the interest on the Junction Rsilroad bonds, due on the ‘Ist inat., at the Company’s office, 18 William street. ‘The Atlantic Bank has declared a dividend of four per cent. The Morris Canal Company received for tols, to Nov. 2%, this year, $272,718, ugainst $230,010 tothe same date last year, showing an increase of $33,708, ‘The amount received fr tulla on all the Now York State Canals, during the third week in November, is. “en 024 ° Bume period in 1854.......... 64+ 98,100 1 Increase £0 1855... ...6.ceseeeeereerereee $27,024 "32 ‘The aggregate amount received tor tolls from the com- mencement of navigation to the 22d of November, inclu- + $2,756,700 90 707,690 23 Increase in 1655. + $49,191 67 Statemext of business at the United States Assay Office at New York, for the month ending Noy. 80, 1866:— ite of gold— ¥or eign hve + $4,000 Foreign bullio > 12,000 .%& bululon, (ielnding California eee mint, bars ($164,000)... 2,334,000 ——— 2,250,000 ts of silver— foreign ccins, 3,500 bullion 18,000 ws. bullion, (contained 1n a 16,500 i bs Total deposits payable in bars Total, Golf Wars stamped Albert H. These returns exhibit a further decline in the specie of the Bank, and uncer the items discounis and advances upon public and railway securities, the result of an in- crease in the ra‘e of interest and the limitation of dis- counts to bills having only reventy days to run is very evident, and if continued will tell seriously upon the in dustry of France, The treasury accvunt current, which stood at £5,262,7¢0 on the 13th September, has now fallen toa little more than « million stecling; #0 that not- withstanding the large purchases of specie said to have Deen made by the Bank, no improvement has appeared an the returns. The anthracite coal trade the past week is about the name a the previous week, and is pretty fair for ths s04- son, ‘The Lebigh Navigation shipped for the week endiag on Saturday last, 20,227 tons; and for tho season to that Gate, 1,268,018. The Reading Railroad brought down for the week ending on Thursday, 87,226 tons; and for the year, 2,206,981 tons, against 1,087,854 tons to the same time last year, The Schuylkill Navigation shipped for the week ending on Thursday, 28,208 tons, and for the peason to that date, 1,073,301 tons, against 896,978 to Corresponding time last year. There is tittle or no change tn the coal market of this city. The basiness is known to be considerably depressed, and prices are quite 8y low as operators can afford. ‘The Philadelphia Ledger of the Ist inst., says: ‘The votes in Council show that authority will be given the city to bor row one million of dollars, to pay floating lia- bilities, and to fsaue 0 snd; to the Sunbury aad Erie Katt- of one million and fifty thousand dol ars, Rastroad five hnodred and twenty: and re Here is an addition to the funded dept of the city of two mitlions five hundred ani seventy-five thonasnd dollars!
