We of course know not what may be the end of this siege, as great and emargetic powers are the parties comeerned; but I think there have been repeated in- stances of attack and defence showing equal or superior Vigor, endurance and skill on the part of besiegers and Among the most celebrated blockades and sieges of the ancients, were those of Thebes, ‘Troy, Platwa, Athens, Tyre, Veil, Agrigentum, Saguntum and Syracuse. In the siege of Thebes, the attack and defence, after be- jng maintained for a long time, ended in mutual forbear- ance, the single combat between Eteocles and Polynices terminating the afair, at least for @ season.
