To a person ofa philosophic turn of mind, the day election {s even more interesting than the eventful per! between wanrise and sunset when the ¥ re cast ‘The elee'ion threugh which we have just passed was an exceedingly important one to thousands of persons whine personal preferences are invelred, or who hope to get thetr bread and butter for the next two or three years {row the newly chotem heady of departiqents The nit who fail in the occupations of everyday life, and thore- fore seck to serve their country by ‘wking fat clerkships, are very well informed upon. Very frequently these va- gabonds have, or aro supposed to have, a great deal of po- litical influence in the district where they Ive, and flat- tering inducements are held out to them before election, ‘They go in for the work—they spend the csndidate's money—they are continually drinking bad liquor, and coaxing or bullying refractory electors. On election day their tabors are tremendous. If they were employed in any legitimate calling they would not work half so hard. At night they bang around the newspaper offices, and eagerly catch at the returns as they come sprinkling in. They go home late, exhausted, nervous and uncertain. ‘The stakes they play for are yet in doubt. Notwitstanding the fatigues of the greatday, they are up betimes in the morning; the Harp at breakfast is eagerly scanned, Still nothing definite is arrived at, ‘They must stili watch and pray, only that they have for- gotten all about the latter exercise long ago. In other quarters the news produces equal excitement from different causes. Conservative men of all parties are especially delighted at the defeatof the Seward black republican, women’s rights, free love faction. For the time, yesterday, stocks were neglected on "Change—‘balls and bears’ joined in congratulations, They were not all pleased because the Know Nothings had done so well, but they were tntensely gratified at the manner ia which the city had comdemned the Seward fanatics and the Van Buren soft shells. At the Corn Exchange the only topic was the election, and the feeling was one of general joy, The great commercial interests of the city and country are all injured vy the Seward, Greeley and Raymond faction. Therefore the merchants rejoiced at their down- fail. At the City Hall the heads of the departments were feverish and uncertain. The county ticket was still some- what in doubt. The newspapers were eagerly acanned— the probabilities were warmly discussed—busineas was al- most suspended, such was the intense anxiety to know how things had gone. The clerks could not write—the chiefs retired early, and everybody made a rash for the evening papers, The Custom House was melancholy in the ex- treme. The softs had become so far softened that all their consistency bad melted out and run away; the gen- ‘tlemen who had submitted to the fifteen per cent tax on their salaries were gloomy and desperate. What was the use of throwing away money in that style? What did Join Van Buren mean by bullying the administration and talk- ing fo much about the platform of 1848 What were these—(profane expressions) —Know Nothings about? Truly the Custom House looked gloomy. About the streets, » great many people thought they would give another day to their country, and talk politics instead of attending to their own affairs, You would meet little ¢hoals of men; and an experienced city survey- or would notice that each shoal was of a different politi cal combination. One set woul! eagerly discuss the chances for the Know Nothing county ticket—they cried, Jubilate, Zo! triumphe?! and were only afraid about their County Clerk, who, it was generally said, had himself to ‘lame if he was not elected. A great many clerks and others who had been annoyed by Flagg, and delayed in getting their just dues for labor performed, were very glad that Flagg was defested. The hard shells generally, although defeated, were particularly pleased with the idea that they had wiped out the softs in the eity, and thes improved thelr prospects before the Ciucinmalt Con vention, In hotels, at the festive board, in the saloons, on Change, in the workshops, in the warehouse and count- ixgroom, the ouly topic of conversation was the election, which, we may safely say, surprised every one, A great many wise people said they kno bout it beforehand; but there can be no doubt about the fact that even the Know Nothings themselves, and the hard shells, were both surprised at their own achievements, The Broad- way House whigs nearly all went the K, N. ticket, and left their candidates without a show, unless they ran upon the American ticket. ‘The greatest excitement was visible about the news pa- per offices, The candidates and their friends struggled for the first returns, Sometimes Willet was Sheriff sometimes Toone—sometimes jolly Dick Connolly was County Clerk, sometimes the injared, but innocent, Beatty, The rush for the evening edition of the Henan was immense, Our publication office was blocked up an hour before the paper was isaued, and our fust prewsex could not supply the demand. The newsboys reaped a rich harvest, and our advertisers profited by «ome thirty or forty thousand extra elrculation. Groups of four or five men looked over each other's shoulders, and read the same paper. By a fair estimate, a million of people read the Himaip yesterday, It was generally acknowledged among the politicians ‘hat the departments would be pretty genreally in good hands, The county ticket was #o split up that the best mented. A great many Lets were made—the odds being generally two to one that the whole Know Nothing ticket, city and State, would be elected. There was considerable vetting on Cowles and Whiting for the Supreme Court, with the odds in favor of Cowles, Altogether, yesterday was a very exciting time. Young America was perfectly happy. and with good reason. THE RESULT. (From the Albany Angas, Nov. 7.) ‘The contest yesterday was. throughout the State, a vort of © free fight,”’ im which the electors took part, without Leing much constrained by past political affini ties, We give the miscellaneous mass ¥ returns which have reached. us by telegraph during the afgt. They indicate that the Know Nothings have cast a large vote, and that the fusioniste have not received the enthusi- astic #upport which they had anticipated. So far as the hard vote ia concerned, t being given upon Ward, who is on the liquor dealers’ ticket, ix probably above its average on the residue of (he ticket.
