Arrival of the Steamship Crescent City. We are in receipt of files of Havana journals up to the ‘Sth inst, We learn from the Prensa, of the 7th, that the Mexican war steamer Guerrero arrived at Neuvitas on the 20th of August, having on board General Santa Anna and bis family. The Guerrero was obliged to put in on account of injurfes received in a storm. Santa Anna pro” ceeded on the Ist of September, by railroad, to Puerto Principe, accompanied by his wife and the rest of his femily. He was received there by the Governor, Don Ramon Conts, Mr. Pozas, and an immense crowd. The ex-President and bis family were accommodated in the Golden Fagle Hotel. The Guerrero is in such a bad con- dition that she cannot continue her voyage to St. Thomas, and so Santa Anna was to have waited for the steamer from Havana, to bring him to St. Thomas or to Caracas. The Prensa also informs us that the first number of the re-issue of La Cronwa will be published in New York on the lst of November. The following letter from our correspondent at Neuvi- tas, gives some more details about the arrival of Santa Anna:— OUR HAVANA CORRESPONDENCE. Havana, Sept. 8, 1855. Numerous Assassinations in Havana—Murder of Mr. Back:- house, British Commissary Judge of the Mixed Commis- Sion—Musical Gossir—Shipping Intelliyence—Another Pokitical Arrest, dc., de. One morning at the latt#® end of the last month, a person proceeding at an hpur to the railway, to take the train and proceed to }) was stopped by a ne- gro om the Paseo, who di ied the intending travel- ler’s money, which not being instantly given up, a knife was thrust into him, and a dangerous, if not mortal, wound inflicted. Tho unfortunate victim was then left to his fate. The epot where this took place being near the railway station, the unfortunate man dragged ‘himself thither. The negro was pursued and captured. He will doubtless meet the fate he so well deserved. ‘There has been 80 many assassinations recently that for several successive days the question invariably first put, in meeting one’s friend in the morning, is: “ Any assassinations in your quarter last night or this morn- ing?’ Amongst those which have more prominently oc- cupied the public mind here are the following: Mr. Ceorge Canning Backhouse, Queen Victoria's Com- missary Judge of the Mixe1 Commission for the Suppres- sionof the Slave Trade, was sitting at his house after dinner, with s Mr. Callaghan, on the evening of Friday of last week, when a gang of negro ruffians, accompanied by two white men, entered the premises, and secured the servants in the outer apartments ; two of the ruffians (negroes) entered the room in which the two gentlemen were, and commenced to tie their arms behind them and also to gug them. Callaghan, who must from his own account, have been very frightened, was thrown on the ground, his arms tied, and his watch taken from his person. The unfortunate Backhouse made a more manful struggle. He attempted first to throw his assailant on the ground; but finding the latter was too powerful a man for him to do this, he next endeavored to take away the monster's knife. Whilst attempting this, Backhouse received a wound in the left vide, which splintered one of his ribs, passed en- tirely through his langa and spleen, and in about four ‘hours he passed from this life to eternity. ‘The unfortn. nate gentleman has a wife in England, and my only fear is that this unyarnished statement of her husband's mur- der may reach her eye before the letters of her friends, who will doubtless communicate the unhappy fact in more soothing language than can be expected froma aewspaper correspondent. It may, however, be some ight consolation to the unha APPS lady to know that ee ceased husband was attended in his last hours by iend, her Britannic Majesty’s Consul General ia and by the very first surgical talent of this city, Alas? without avail.” The murderer and all his confederates havedeeu captured, and I have reason to believe that sufficient proof tocondemn at least a portion of them has aiready been adduced. Before this month is over they doubtless will be garroted. Another murder bas since been committed, by a girl, pon the person cf her godmother, whose throat she cut, and then rushed into the seu to drown herself. She was, however, taken out of the water, and probably a tess honorable death awaits her. This murder took place cear the Calzada ce fan Lazaro, Yet another. entleman, aclerk in the house of Zang*oniz, Bro- & Co., on Satureay morning last had been e1 in mahing collections for his employers. He carried in his band a beg containing « considerable amount in gold. An assassin met him about 1 o'clock P. M., inflicted a deadiy stab with a knife, and, as the gentleman fe!l to the ground, seized the bag of gold, and effected his es- cape. One more! A negro, at Regla—your readers are aware that this place is nituated opposite this city across the bay—was Assassinated in the street one night this week, and his ‘corpse found in the morning. Now for a burglary A ir store near the corner of Mercadares strect— fre where I can testify they used to sell excellent segurs— was burglariously entered one night this week. All ‘he segars were stolen, together with some lottery tickets and the money in the drawer. Let it not be supposed that! have hunted up all these cases of crime, for such is uot the fact; they were in the mouths of “all manner of men’? for several days this week. But enough of such sickening relations. Now for a more —— ie ge to the opera since I inst wrote the first tim: to hear Verdi's “Rigoletto,” the secon Rossin 's immortal “‘Bar- bes ore. Al! brokers are to be taxed 850 a year for the exercise of their business, and various other professions and articles were named as about to be subjected to this new impost, which do not now recur to my memory. We have had another visit from her Britannic Majesty's brig-o-war Arab. She sailed on the Oth inst. for Port Royal, Jamaica. The French steamer-of-war Acheron, and brig Nestes, have also both been agaim here. They, however, sailed on the 3d inst, for parts unknown. The Mexican steamer Santa Anna, which has been so long here under repairs, made an effort to get to sea on her way to Vern Cruz, on the 4th inst. She, however, broke down, or her machinery did, and she returned o this port, exhibiting signals of distress. One of our bay steamers went to her aid and towed her into port. ‘The first of the ‘“Zangroniz Brothers” line of transat lantic steamer, the Habana, arrived én the 28th ult. trom Spain; she is a «plendid ship of 1,880 tons burthen. OUR NUEVITAS CORRESPONDENCE. Nuxvrras, Aug. 81, 1855. Arrival and Departure of Santa Anna. Our quiet little city was taken by surprise yesterday afternoon by the appearance in our bay of a Mexican war steamer; and our surprise was considerably in- creased when it was known that his ex-Highness D. An- tonio Lopez de Santa Anna, with his family, were on board said steamer. It appears that the steamer Guer- rero, Commander Bosquet, left Havana on Sunday last, the 26th, for St. Thomas and Laguayra, but the boiler becoming leaky, she had to put in here (the nearest port) to repair. J went on the wharf about an hour after she anchored, and saw his ex-Highness land in company with his wife, (a very lady-like, pretty little woman,) his daughter, (not so pretty,) and her husband and chill a Gen, Soto, some two or three female attendants, tre. ox thuse wsleec-stmee danen pamene fai Ger Governor, D, Justo Sanchez, became the host for the nonce, and carried the whole party off to his house. ‘This afternoon His ex-Highness, in company with the Governor, in a chaise, drove over to the railroad station, about a mile from the town, followed by his family in an open barouche, and a few ollicers on horseback. As they drove through the streets, the General looked quite lively and hearty, but not a'single viva greeted his ears as he passed. ome of the loafers on the corners puffed lazily at their segars, stared at him, touched thet hats in respect of our Governor; the neighbors at their doors Woke aly after him, and remarked to their next hbor that that was the great Santa Anna. Ay “what > r I was there, wy countrymen!” This would-be Em- ‘or—tbis commander of the [ere order of Guada- pe—now going fast into the vale of years, an outcast foci his wattve land, looking tor a home among strangers. He und his family go to-morrow to the city of Puerto Principe, to remain there a few days, until an express can be sent 1o Havana asking fora Spanish war steamer to take him to St. Thomas. ‘e have the steamer Basan here, and it is very probable that the place her at his disposal. 1 think it is will proceed in the Guerrero. the mail closes 1 wall add. vernment will joubtful that he If 1 learn any more before BOUCKSHOT. Base Ball, KNICKERBOCKER V8. GOTHAM CLUB. These two clubs, that stand Al in the national game of base ball, met yesterday to contend for the return game. The weather was all they could desire and the interest that all take in this beautiful game drew togeth- er a large body of visiters—certainly not less than 1,000 being present, among them a good show of ladies. The first game came off on the Gotham ground June Ist, Red House, Harlem, on which occasion the Gothams were victorious by 9 runs. The feeling, therefore, on this oc- casion was that the result would be the same; but such was not to be the case. The Knickerbockers won splen- didly, 22 to 7—15 runs ahead; they played 5 innings each. A great improvement in keeping the abies was shown, several n.embers being doputed with blue ribbons affix tothe coat to Keep the spectators back. This prevented the crowd from pressing round the catcher, and gave all a good chance of seeing. The Knickerbockers played the best. Le Bost isa host in himself; he was the life of the gume ond decidedly the best player in the United States. Conover, Dupi sna Stevens—the latter as pitcher» played well, thams do not play a good losing yame. ‘They did not. show ‘well at all—Sheridan and ‘udlipp excepted. After the game was over the Knicker- Lockers entertained their friends most liberally. The Pre- sident proposed the health ot the Gothams, and Judge Van Cott responded. He said that ‘kind fiiends had come round him and whispered that he played rascally bad; another friend who wished to act as a mediator had pinned a card to his cont, on which was inscribed ‘he is not dead, but sleepeth.’.’ He said they had played bad; they came on the ground expecting to be beat. He did hot wish to take any palm from the Knickerbocker had won the match by good play; but in spi seal that he maintained that the Goiham’s were seme.’’ He con- cluded by proposing sucvess to which ever side won the rubber, "by some oversight the Knickerbockers were not toasted, On the ground we noticed representations from the following clubs :—Putnam, Empire, Eckford, Pioneer, Columbia, Fagle, Atlantic, Bal tic, Excelsior, and the President of the St. George's: Cricket Chub. The jury were then called into court, and delivered a verdict of guilty of man- slavghter ‘in the thirddegree. ‘The punishment for this is imprisonment for a term between two and four years. The sentence of the Court was reserved. TRIAL FOR INSANITY. William Fbling, who is charged with shooting John Gil Foy, in the Ninth avenue, was put upon trial, the issue before the jury being merely to decide whether tie prisoner was insane or not, or too insane to be put on trial. The counsel for the prisoner said physicians had exainined the prisoner and declared him to be insane and unfit for trial, Dr. Detmoid sxworn—I was once a professor in the Medical College; I visited the prisoner in his cell; I con- sider him insane; he thought the Bible commanded him to take the life of those who persecuted him, and be thought there were many perseenting him; he considers that he did right in taking life, and said he intended kill ing others.
