FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL: MONEY MARKET. Taurspar, Sept. 13-6 P. M. ‘The tock market is dally becoming more de- preeed. Ag the first board all the fancies and some of Che, cubstantials were lower. Illinois Central borin @eelined 4 per cent; Nicaragua Transit j; Cumberiand Coal j; Reading Railroad }; Hudson River Railrond }; Illinois Central Railroad 3; Cleve. land “and Toledo Railroad {. Chicago and Rock Inland advanced } per cent. There was more among speculators, and a more general sepa to ell be bears were in high spirits, and sold right and ieft everything on the list. Money is getting scarce. The demand is daily in- creasing and the supply diminishing. For about sixty days there will be quite » stringency in the money market. After that time money matters will probably become easy again, and we should not be eurprised to see before the winter sets in a very active epeculative movement in stocks. During the next eixty days, however, the tendency of Trices will, without doubt, be downward, and we for @ decline ranging from three to five per cent. Stocks of a faucy character will, of course, suffer the most, aud will be crowded upon the market in larger quantities. Those who get them off their hands first will realize the best prices, and those who hold on must look sharp into their affairs and be sure they will not be compelled to sel come time hence, when lower prices will rule. Railroad stocks generally are vot well held. There fare enormous blocks in the street, and the bears know very well they must come out. A few turns in the sorews upon the money market will etraight- ea out some holders and oblige them to sell when they litue dream of it. Very few holders of stocks know when to sell. Instead of selling at a profit when they might, they hold on for better prices, and finally cell at a loss. When there are strong iudica- tions of « gontraction in the money market, the ‘wisest couree is at once to cell all doubtful or fi. oy seourities, particularly those which have been bol- stered up entirely by speculation, and patiently wait with the money in hand for the decline which is gure to follow, and if advisable come in again at the bottom of the market. The tenacity with which outsiders hold on to the most notorious fancy stocks is most extraordinary. We have seen, time and again, large profits refused, and ultimate losses to almost 2 ruinous extent submitted to. There are upon the list two or three railroad stocks. which are steadily but gradually settling down gp market value, and there is uo doubt but thas ty days hence they will range from five to ten per cent under current rates. Notwitistanding the almost certainty of such a resuit, and the oppor- tanity which now presents of getting out, we shail find the sales at the lowest points quadruple what they are at ruling prices. Those who refuse to cell now will rush into the street then to realize, glad to get back any portion of the amount originally in- vested. We have for years tried to impress upon the minds of outsiders who are unwise enongh to gpeculate in railroad fancies, the importance of realizing a profit when they can. This class of operators never are governed by the signs of the times. They never are on the lookout for squally times, but blindly trust to luck. We can now say, for the hundredth time, to outside holders of fancy railroad stocks, that we are upon the ove of a con. traction in the money market, and the safest courze is to realize. Pocket the profit or loss for the time, and wait for a more favorable period. It will soon come; but in the meantime we shall have pretty sharp shinning times in Wall street. After the adjournment of the board, the following sacs of bonds and stocks were made at auction by A. H. Nioolay:— $1,000 Williamsport & Elmira Istm. int. adaed uf ‘4,000 Cleve, F vl & Asbtabula KR 7's. do, 87 1,000 Mad fiver and Erie RR, 3d mort 84 61000 Chicago and Sliss; RR, incume 10’s.do, 75 8 Th 5,000 Bridgeport, Ct.. At the second board the market was a shade or two better for some of the leading stocks, while others rufed tower. Erie advanced } per cent; Read- ing, 4; Michigan Southern, ?. Nicaragua declined } per cent. The sound dividend paying railroad stooks are not offered in auy quantity. We do not see any large sales of Galena and Chicago, of Michi- gan Southern, of Chicago and Rock Island, or any others of the good Western railroad stocks. The advance in Galena and Chicago, within the past two days, has been nine per cent, and no stock is offering at the market price. That stock is held for per- manent investment, and in no other stock can the same amount of money be made to give such great returns. The receipts thus far this month have averaged about $10,000 per day. The aggregate for the month will be upwards of $260,000, a rate of in- come on capital unprecedented in the history of railroads in thiscountry. The gross income this year will amount to nearly one half the entire cost of the road. At the same rate the Erie and Ceutral should earn eighteen millions of dollars each this year. With a surplus of fifteen per cent on its capi- tal ia hand at the commencement of the present fiscal ycar, and a net income this year ot at least fifteen per cent more, we can form some idea of the probable dividends. For the year ending May 1, 1666, the company paid dividends amounting to seventeen per cent, and had a surpius in hand of $316,764 48. The direetors estimate that with gross earnings for the year ending the lst of May, 1856, of only $2,000,000, the company can pay 10 per cont dividend, and have a surplus of $690,754. The official returns tor seven months of the present fiscal year show thatthe aggregate will be several hundred thonsand dollars greater thun the estimate, so that ‘the surplus on the Igt of May, 1456, is likely to b nearer one million of dollars than the figure named by the management. ‘The earnings of the Michigan Southernand North- ern Indiana Railroad, for the month of August, amount to about $190,000, (the exact figures are not yet known) against $167,715 01 for the same mouth last year. The earnings for the eight months end- ing 81st August (August being estimated as above) amount to « total of ...... Earnings rame period in 1854 Gain In cight months $285,141 32 Atthe same ratio of increase for the remainder of the year, the total earnings for the year 1855 will amount to over $2,600,000. This is one of the few reads in tho country which can be operated under Oty per cent. This will give net $1,300,000, out of ‘which pay a dividend of 10 per cent, say $700,000; intetest on debt, sy $450,000, and the company have & surplas of $150,000 for future contingencies. ‘The futare productiveness of this road is beyond all calculation. The increase has been about fifty per cent in each of the past three yearg ‘The annexed statoment exhibits the grovs and net earnings of the Reading Railroad Company for the month of August, 1854 and 1855:— Pmapmrma anv Roapino Rarroan, 1854. 1655, $455,507 68 $436,081 2 20,117 31281890 14 29,690 40 ©4089 42 9605,545 39 $600,230 08 177,207 32 189,608 08 ++ $828,138 07 $610,622 60 Vor pron 6 months. 947,483 92 1,434,578 20 rn it for 9 mos. 2 sokabteartada ta vet income in sice 02, 90, 9:74 200 00 this year “ seve $460,678 81 For the firettime this year the monthly returns show e falling off both in the gross and net income. ‘The quantity of coal transported to market in An- guest, 1865, wae considerably larger than in the same month Inst year; but the tolls this year were at slower rate, Horotofore it has Woon the rule of i profits for the month receipts from that source. In the other departments of busi- ness there has been an increase. It appears by the above returns for August, that the actual operating expenses only amonmnted to thirty-eight per cent of the gross income. There is not another road in the country operated at such a reduced rate. We are glad to hear that Mr. George D. Lyman, fhe manager of the Clearing Honse, has been ap- “pointed by Mr. Schoonmaker, the Superintendent of Banking, agent for that department in the city of New York, to have charge of the bank note plates and printing. The place of deposit for these is the Manhattan Banking Company. A appoint: ment could not have been made. A return of fine weather, and the barome- ter indicating ils continuance, has, however, influenced a more cheerful tone, with extended. transactions during the past few days, and wo close (with saies to-day exti- mated at 10,000 bales, 3,000 to Apeculators and export- ers,) with greater firmness, and-an evident tendenc, towards higher pricer—last’ week’s quotations, whic! were scarecly obiainable in the early part of the week, being resumed.
