GRAND HARD SHELL COUP D'ETAT. Excitement and Consternation among the Office Seekers and Strikers What the Hard shell General Committee Did Last Sight. REJOICNNGS OVER THR MAINE VICTORY. CONFERENCE WITH DANIEL 6. DICKINSON. MOVEMENTS OF THE REPUBLICANS. &e., &e., &. The announcement in yesterday's Hxmarp, that the Hard Shell General Committee were about to dispense with the primary elections this fall, and nominate all the candidates themselves, produced no ittle excitement among the politicians and office seekers, who repaired in great numbers to Stuyvesant Institute last night to try and influence the action of the General Committeo. On arriving at the Institute our reporter found the barroom, hall and street, swarming with politicians, strikers and loafers, highly excited and venting loud anathemas on the purposes of the new movement, So high ran the feeling that the proprietor of the ball became alarmed and gent for a posse of the Fifteenth ward police, who re- mained until the adjournment of the committee, to pre- vent the politicians from indulging in the rough and tumble knock down and drag out 0 congenial to their tastes. Among the lobby members were Richard Con- nelly, James Furey, Justice Connelly, Harry Howard, Hon, Thos. J. Munday, six or seven of the candidates for Corener, besides a host of smaller office holders and office seekers. ‘When it was announced that the committee had de- termined to dispense with primary elections and do the nominating themselves the crowd separated in avery bad humor, This action of the committeo, it was argued, was most tyrannical, and far exceeded the famous 5th of August movement of Dan. Sickela in 1852; while the members of the committee, in reply, stated it was the only means they had left of preserving their organiza. tion intact, aa the softs and Custom House peopie had everything 9 ranged to carry the primaries and fuse, which the Simon Pure hards would uot listen to, and henee their action. ‘the committee organized by Horace 8, Clark, of the Eighteenth ward, being called to the chair, and ‘John Y.
