FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. HONEY MAaBKS?. Monpar, July 9—6 P. M. The «tock market opened buoyant this morning, and with considerable activity. Tennesee 6's ai- vanced 1 per cent ; Louisiana 6’s, } ; Indiana 5’s, 4; Tiltmois Internal Improvement Stock, j ; Ilinois Central Bends, j ; Cumberland, j ; Nicaragua Tran- sit, 4; New York Central Railroad, } ; Erie Rail- road, 4; Reading Railroad, 1j. Michigan Southern Bailroad declined j per cent. A large amount of business was transacted and the market sppeara to be eteadily moving upward. Reading was the card today. The New York holders are selling out to Philadelphians at high prices, and the probability is that sometime hence capitalists of this city will be able to buy ail they want back sgain at lower prices. ‘It was reported in the strest this morniog that the Reading Railroad Company was largely interested in the immensely valuable land decision in California, with Pa'mer, Cook & Co. This is, wa believe, amistake. A gentleman connected with tne Read ing Reilzosd Company is, we are happy to learn, ‘purt owner of the tract of land in question, and the probability is that this fact gave rise to the report in circulation. The interest of the party alluded to is estimated to be worth upwards of half a mil- Non of dollars. We are gratified that the decision has proved 0 favorable to such a worthy man. Erie is steady advarcing again, but the transa:- tions are comparatively moderate. Cumborland Coal Company is destined to touch higher prices. The recent report of the President for the last fiscal year shows a very favorable state of things. There was mined and sent to market during the year, 225,208 tons of coal, which, after deducting ex- penees for mining, trarsportation, agencies, &c., &c., netted $189,630 68, which with $29,700 23 net freights received from company’s vessels, amounts in the aggregate to $219,330 91. The President seys;— In 3825, was January, 1853, the debt of the company was £00, and at the commencement of the past year it 000, the interest of which has been na seventy thousand dollars ($70,000) of the principal has recently been extinguished by paying off and cancellin; the bonds, !eaving a balance of $467,000, which will fa! due onthe first cay of January next, and may be pro- vided for without embarrassment to the company, wbich is now earning lerge returns on the property actually worked. The mines, with their pereek equipment of duildings, tools, and facilities for transportation, are of immense intrinsic value, and afford full-an for an almost unlimited amount of business, therefore suggest the propriety of augmenting the re- sources and facilities of the company, by disposing of such or portions of the property as are unneces- eary for its profitable and successful business, The arsets on hand May 1, 1854, amounted to $269,720 33; net earnings May 1, 1855, $219,330 91 —total $489,051 24. Paid for locomotives. cars, canal boats, engine house, &c., wharf at Alexandiia, &s., $152,880 06. Suspended debta, $112,755 83. Paid for thizty-five bonds cancelled, $33,250. Persons; and indispensable property at the mines, Alexandria and Baltimore, $33,921 30. Available assets in cash and bills receivable om hand May 1, 1855, $156,294 05. The company als> have on hand 2,822 shares of its capital stock. The company have sold this year, up to the Ist of June, 66.862 tons of cal, against 50,709 tons in the corresponding months last year. This coal must soon be generally used 1p locomotive engines. The experiments made thus tar have ail been satisfactory and conclusive. Tne President of the Cumberiand Coal Company, in his report, eaye:— It is now used, to the almost entire exclusion of any other fuel, on the freight and pasrenger engines on the Baitimore aad Onio road; a:so, on the Northern Central, more generally known as the Raliimore and Susquebanaa railway, where wood can be purchased at $3 per cord; and within arecent date, a most remarkable proof has been furnished of its adaptation to this purpose on some of our eastern roads; 40 much #0, that large establishment at Taunton hes commenced the manufac ture of locomotives for the use of our coal, and others ere turning their attention to the same object. Two engines have been worzing on various roads during the past year with remarkable success; one of them having Tan more then 20,000 miles with invariable economy, a per experiment on Boston and Lovell road, showing - saving of filty:two per cent in favor of Cumberisa coal. That the use of this coi, within a very orief od, will be as general on our railroads as wood now » there cannot bea doubt; so repidiy is it gi ning in favor, that tite locrea sed consumption. for the iv years cont against trirteen con Fi sathroatey it cl sacherws be remarbed, thet on on road, the Hucson River, there was consumed, ia th | rod Sg 40,00 cords of wood, costing the almos or ‘sum of $280,000. Cumberland coal, to gene rate the same quantity of steam and perform the sem ‘mount of labor, would have cost not exceedin $160,000, thus showing a sa of $120,000, being, s aix percent, the interest of $2.000,000, a sum wel ‘wor the attention of stockholders of that and othe Toads using wood asa fuel at ver cost, and the expense Meas ial taetenen 1s cedpicoosemlinncest. All the Western railroad stocks were steady to- day. The reports of earnings for June are coming in favorably, anies the season advances they will be able to make’ a atil! better financial exhibit. State stock and railroad bonds continue in active demand, without much change in prices. The interest coupons of the Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad bonds, guaranteed by the Michigan Central Railroad Company, due Jaly 10, will ba paid at the American Exchange Bank on that day. The increase in discounts and depo sits last week was larger than we have before re- ported this year, and the aggregate amount on Sat- urday, the 7th inst., was larger than we have before reported since the commencement of the weekly etatements. If such is the movement with little doing in the way ct business, what must we expect with en active demand for money for mercantile purposes. The extent of deposits show pretty ciesrly the present inactivity of capital. We shall require a large amount to move the maturing crops, end the sbundarce of our harvests will, it is ex- pected, give a great impetus to tradg. If these things are realized, the banks will be required to extend the line of loans, and the aggregate wiil reach a figure which cannot but ircrease the danger of a sudden contraction. It is possible, however, that the banks have departed from their nsusi custom, tbe aggtegete weekiy reported. It; they Wil only e aggregst iy 40, they will on! have to draw in loans on stocks and give thom to the mercactile clarses. In this way the regular line of discounts would not show mach expansion bey ond its present limit, even with an active de mand from business men for business purposes.
