The fireworks which the city authorities intended abould have been exhibited on the evening of the Fourth of July—but the display of which bad to be postponed oa account of the then unfavorable state of the weataer— Were se: off yesterday in the City Hall and other towa parks under very favorable circumstances, Aglorious sunset, after # fine healthy day, was succeeded by a cool, hazy’ and rather dark evening, and overhead a rich blue aky gave promise that the heavens woald be as propitious as the most sanguine pyrotechnist or the most ardent sight-gazer could cesire. The effect was very soem ex- hibited, At about half past @ Yolock in the after- noon some hundreds of boys, with a pretty fair sprink- ing of grown up men, were collected in THE CITY HALL PARK, and although the workmen were then only employed in perfecting their arrangements, with regard to the proper placiag ond securing of the several ekeleton denigas, the crowd, which was momentarily increasing, commenced to take up the places which they imagined would afford the mont favorable chance of viewing the scene from beginning to end. With this object before them, the boys commenced to climb up the Park trees, hang on to the tops of the lamp posts, and ascend the shoulders of each other until several grouped up human Pyremids of gaping juveniles produced a very pio- turesque effect. Most of these arrangements were, however, broken up at seven o'clock, when @ perfect rush of people entered the grounds from all asides, and duriog the succeding half hour ® safe standing place could hardly be obtained, At the Inst named period there eouid not have been less than thirty thou: sand perecns, of all ages and every color aad condition, Within and around the fence rails of the Park, and still Others were pressingon, The scene was at e diver- sified and pleasing. The balcony in frout of the City Hall was crowded with ladies and gentlemon, whilst every window on their right and left was filled at the same time. ‘The more aspiring had mounted to the roof of the building, the topmost purapeta of which wore soon lined with joyous and smiling faces, Outside the gates, the balconies, windows and roofs of Tammany Hall, French’s Hotel, and of ali the other pub- lic and private houses ruaning up to Tryon row and down ® part of Centre street, presented the same anima- ted spectacle, whilst the houses om Broadway and on Chambers street, which are in sight of the Hall—such as the Astor, Irving, and many stores and boarding houses —were also crow¢ed inside and on top. The thousands who bad not access to such accommo- dations aa those referred to, had to rough it ax bess they could, in and about the Park, and they certainly saw more of city life, and likely felt more enjoyment, thaa if they were seated in or ona house, Out of doors they could meet regar venders innumerable, ice cream and lemonade manufacturers and merchants without end, fruiterera from every clime, and root beer and sods water stanta of every size, and presenting an infinity of curious architectural arrangement. Physiologista were around also, with machines by which they would teat the ‘strength of anybody's lungs, for the charge of one cent,” and in most instances they sent their patients y in a mood most deflant to Dr. Hunter and the ad- vocates of the propored Consumption Honpital. An ap- paratus for ‘ weighing one’s nolt’? was stuck up at almost every corner, and hundreds invested money in ascertaining the pleasing fact that the recent “bard timer’? had not mace such ravages on their corporate proportions as they had feared. Barkets of fire crackers were for sale; and these being soon emptied by the boys, their flaming and whizzing contents were thrown into the crowd, every now and then causing amonget the ladies the most nervous dread for the safety of that ‘duck of a hat,” or ‘sweet muntill,’ and a universal shifting of places amonget all, which even if not very agrosable, rerved to keep the biood in a healthy state of circulation during the time of waitir About eight o’olock a general enim was produced by ‘the appearance of = fine band of musit on tie balcony over the City Hell steps, which struck up & few national atra, to the great delight of the crowd. It may well be called a ctowd, for at this time the aum- bers present from all sections of New York, as wall aa from the neighboring cities, amounted to very noerly seventy thousand luman beings, and thus all our “mass metting”’ assembleges were completely throwa in the shade. When the music had ceased, a discharge of sky- rockets was commenced trom the roof of the Uity Hall, and as the flaming messengers ascended in quick suc cession, the people gave vent to tacir feelings with cries of ‘good!’ “fine!”? “ beautiful!” “yah yah!” and other exclamations of delight. When « rocket failed, an some of them did, there were shouts of ‘‘backed out!’ “caved in!” “gone back!” “no go!” from young and old, At a quarter past eight the general dispiny was commenced and proceeded with in the following Hes ORDBR [4 ARRANGEMENT. st—A very i ngola, or display of artilicial moonlight, hoy pm Bynes Pyrotechnic work; but with such a blue unclouded sky, no part of ic could be by any chance gistaken forthe moon.
