None but those who were intimately connected with this or other associations of a similar character could possibly become acquainted with the vast extent of want and destitution that oxiet- ed in this city last winter, and none who contribated towards their «upport can tally estimate the amount of good accomplished and tbe su! a relieved. It is be lieved that this association has not been connected in any way with the many other as- sociations im the ward, amc this statement refers excic- sively to what it has itself accomplished. It is not to be expected that we can give a full account of all its particular operations, and it would require too much space. The foliowing account of the namber of familios and peraons relieved will be sufficient to convince all that we bave Fp 4 disbursed ‘the moans entrasted to us. The association bas cisbursed the sum of $4,555 86 for provisions, ke , via: beef, pork, mutton, fish, navy bread, wheat bread, potatoes, turnips, carrsts rice, onions, cabbage, beans, neef and bean soup, coal, &c., which articles were bcught at wholesa'e prices, by which a waving of 40 per cent realized, making the actual value of the provisions given out $6,378 19. It would bave cost the association for relieving the condition of the poor, by their mode of distributing relief, about $6,876 19 to bave supplied the same number of persons, woich were oy Py, this association for $4 55 85. From the 24th day of December, 1855, to the 15th of January, inclusive, the average number of tamilies re- lieved per day was 287 11-25, or 1,068 16-23 person Total in the sawe period, 6,462 famili 9 rons. On account of the numerous necersary, after the 1fth of January, to two parta, one balf coming one day, and mext, and in orcer that they amount of provisions as if they , jt was given them to supply their most pre: wants for two Gays, which was equivalent applying them ail on one day. Tas change wi made for the tenefit of the applicants a6 well as the as- sociation, as it required too mut ime aod labor to eupply them ell om one day. Since the 16th day of January to the Sist of March, 1556, inclusive, there were relieved 25,047 families, or 107,761 persons ; the ally average was 019 22-75 familior, or 1,438 61-75 per eons, These persons having received sufficient every other day to supply them two days, it is equivalont to supplying 655 44-75 families or 2,972 47:76 persoas dasly: and in the period of 75 days, 47,894 families or 2s perrons, which namber, added to the namorr relieve! up to the 16th of January, which is 24,579 per b, es 240,102 persons.
