THE FRIETP AND THE ENEMY. BY JOUN NEWTON, JR. mt foe is etier than a stupid friend.— ian Proverb. here was once in Cashmere a certain prince, who had a favorite ape, which he petted with princely caresses. The af- fection of this enimal was so great that it never left its master’s side, and at night it would stand by his pillow with a sharp dagger in its hand, and there watch with patience until morning. It happened one night that a cunning robber, from some far-off country, en- tered the city, and began to wander from house to house and street io street, in search of plunder. About the same time a foolish thief, who lived in Cachmere, came forth from his den with the same inicntion, and socn after fell in with the Stranger. As they were both engaged in the same pursuit, they agreed to work together that night. Said the traveled revber to his companion: “Friend, in which district shall we be- gin, and whose house shall we rob first?’ The foclish one answered: “In the stable of our city governor there is a fat and swift-footed ass, which is highly Valued by ils master, and which is wei! secured by a chain, and guarded by tw» slaves. My advice is that we go. first of all, and steal the ass. After that, let us repair to the shop of a certain glass maker, who iives at the corner of the street. There with bis glass we will load the ass, and taking it home, make money.” The wise thief was astonished at his friend’s discourse, and was considering whether he had not spoken in jest. Men have reformed, met with vice the sccond time, and have resisied—have died—Le- fore they wouldagain c:brace ner evil ways. This is the spirit that marks a great mind in men—to die for viriue’s sake. Our greatest men have been sayed by the opportune smile of virtue eveu in women, sometimes, whose sympathetic nature is always alive to the secret suf- fering of this class of unfortunate men. She knows that brilliancy in men is dan- gerous and often:leadstoruin. Strange, but the greatest men say that when they were were most applauded and flattered, then was the time they fell—adding, that to think of deprivation and reforma- tion frightened them—to suddenly prac- tice self denial, death would follow—to <eep on in the vice would consume them —and they resolved ifdeath must come, that they would meet her in the right path, and reformed—and there are noble champions now, struggling on, and whose continued self-denial, after great excesses, is eating likea canker-werm upon their very vitals, and whose motto is farewell forever to their former dens of iniquity. But this foolish design is as wicked and danger- ous as if you had intended to plunder the prince’s treasury.” With these words he tied the man’s hands together, and took him off to prison. When they were gone, the wise robber took warning from the words of his silly companion, but profited by the remarks of the cofewal. «That thief,” thought he, “was a dangerous friend; but the co!ewal shall prove a useful eyemy ; for now that he has mentioucd it, I will go rather to the treasury of this very prince.” With this intention, he made his way to the princes palace, and began a breach in the wall. After a long and toilsome labor, he at length finished a hole large enough to admit his body. When he entered, he found himself’ standing in a bedchamber ; before him was the prince, stretched in sleep ona golden couch, while jewels lay scattered around him, mingled with the riches of many lands. The apartment was hung with curtains of Cashay, and camphor lamps shed their soft light on every ob- ject. But after looking about the room moment, the robber was not a little amazed to see a monkey standing at the head of the royal sleeper, flourishing a naked biade in his hand, and he gazed from right to left with a careful and knowing air. Unable to comprehend the truth of the watter, the housebreaker became alarmed. « How can this wretched man,” thought he, ‘save himself from the murderous weapon of the beast ¢” As he thus pondered, multitudes of! ants suddenly began to fall from the ceil- ing of the canopy upon the sleeper’s breast. ‘Ihe prince being annoyed, in- voluntarily, in his sleep, struck his hand across his bosom. ‘Lhe ape instant] a what was the matter, ing with rage, and was about to plunge it into the coverlet in order to de- stroy the puny intruders. * Bold, you cowardly villain !” shout- ed the robber; ‘‘ would you slay the Beauty-of-the-world ?” the uplifted hand of the monkey, held it in his own tight grasp.
