WHOLE NO. 6886. INDEPENDENCE DAY. ‘ourth of July, and Gow it will be Cele brated in New Yurk— ne Military Parade— Excurstuns, Amusements, etc. To day will be celebrated, in » becoming manner, ‘the seventy-ninth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The forations, parades, civic and ‘tilitary festivities usual on sucn occasions, will be indulged in, andwith even more than the usual spirit. It is observable that as years roll by, an in creared interest is manifested in t:e nution’s natal day—a feeling due to the growth of a more intenss national sentiment in our midst, aad a recognition by our people that the blessings flowing from the Declaration of Independence, and the organization of our federal government, cannot be overestimated, or its anuivereary heiled with too many menifesta- tions of delight. Bat with this commendab!e feel- ing, it must be confessed there is a vast smount of noneense also exhibited on the “glorious Fourth.” Buncombe speeches are got off, in which the Americen eagle plays number of extraordinary capers, and the “starry flag of freedom” forms an Important portion of sundry turgid and bombastic rhetorical sentences, Ove of our exchanges, & Maryland paper, in an ap.strophe to the Amorican ‘lag, informs the astonished world that it will yet “awave at the gates of the setting sun,” 6 point in space, by the way, that has not a3 yet been dis- covered by any known writer on geography or astronemy. Our glorious Union, the revolutionary fathers, despotiam, liberty, ard kindred topics, will be descanicd on ad navsewm, from Maine to Florida, and from the Atlantic to the Western lakes. There will be gleaming bayonets, ths booming of guns, the rattle of musketry, and all the appurtenences of mimmic warfare in every town aud village threughcut the country. There will be powder -epcugh exploded to take Sebastopol, and a suffi- ciency of liquor drank to float a fleet, and all will endeavor to be as patriotic and as jolly as cirocum- staiiocs will permit. PREPARATIONS FOR THE FOURTH IN THE CITY. For come time past it has been evident that Fourth of July was approaching. The crackling of firecrackers, and the occasional pistol and annsket shots from every side street, and the pleased and delighted look of young New York, all bore evidence to the fact. Early ia the evoning of yes. terday, the uproar commenced, to the huge delight of the juvesiles and the inflaite annoyance o! sua- dry old women in pantaloons and petticoats, whose nerves got the better of their patriotiem. To-¢ay the new liquor law is supp2eed to go into effect, though from tae looks of the barrooms ons would sappose the traffic was never so flourishing as at present. Itistobe hoped that the conduct of our citiz:ns to day will be such as to prove that sumptusry laws are not necessary to keep the community sober, and undue induigence is not an inevitable consequence of funtestricted liquor selling.
